Bluegrass Jam at the Machine House Brewery

Pickers, singers, and listeners gather at Machine House Brewing in Hillman City for an all-ages bluegrass jam that welcomes every skill level. It is a friendly circle where you can lead a tune or simply play rhythm, and newcomers who can handle basic chords are welcome. The focus stays on bluegrass. Songs from other genres are fine if played in a bluegrass style, and the host may decline a selection to keep things running smoothly. Original tunes are welcome when they are easy to follow, keeping in mind this is a jam rather than an open mic. When the group is large, those not leading may be asked to sit in an outer circle. The jam is free, and attendees are encouraged to support the venue by purchasing beverages and tipping the bartender. Non-drinkers are welcome and can still show support with a tip. Buying the host a beer is considered good etiquette. Charts are allowed if they do not get in the way of others, though memorizing is encouraged. Dogs are welcome, and the gathering is open to those under 21. If a tune is not your speed, you can sit it out. Food is not served on site, but outside food is allowed and a food truck may be arranged when there is interest. Helpful resources are available, including a song of the week, playlists, and charts, and familiarity with the Nashville Number System can make following along easier. Members of the Outlander Progressive Bluegrass Social Club receive a discount of one dollar per drink with a valid membership card.

Lecture: Queer Ecology

Explore the wide variety of sex, sexual development, gender, and sexuality found across nature, and consider how these traits help form strong, connected communities in living systems. The program draws on solid evidence and real case studies to present the full spectrum of patterns observed in the natural world. Attention is given to purposes for behaviors and developmental pathways linked to sex that go beyond reproduction. Discussion also looks at how social and political settings shape which ideas about sex, gender, and sexuality gain prominence in fields of natural science. The speaker is Dr. Veronica Cassone McGowan, an ecologist and learning scientist. She leads the UW Bothell Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement at the Environmental Education and Research Center at St. Edward State Park, and also serves as a senior research scientist at the Goodlad Institute for Educational Renewal. Her work situates science and engineering within broader socioecological and sociotechnical systems, with a focus on decision-making patterns that support flourishing communities and environments. Her projects center racial justice and gender equity in STEM education from kindergarten through college and in professional learning contexts.

Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton

Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents four nights and six performances with Grammy-winning singer Lisa Fischer and the band Grand Baton, supported by KNKX and the Washington Blues Society. The lineup features Lisa Fischer on vocals with JC Maillard on guitar, Thierry Arpino on percussion and drums, and Richie Goods on bass. Fischer’s career spans collaborations with Luther Vandross, the Rolling Stones, Sting, Tina Turner, and Nine Inch Nails, alongside her own chart-topping R&B hit How Can I Ease the Pain, which earned a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Her appearance in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom inspired a turn toward leading her own projects, and Grand Baton became the ideal partner for that creative leap. Together they shape a sound that flows through progressive rock and psychedelic soul, guided by African, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean rhythms with touches of classical influence. Onstage they reimagine songs linked to Led Zeppelin, Amy Grant, Little Willie John, Luther Vandross, and the Rolling Stones, as well as Fischer’s signature hit. Keith Richards, after years of sharing the stage with her in the Rolling Stones, has praised the remarkable power and projection of her voice. Since first touring in 2014, often without recordings or merchandise, Fischer and Grand Baton have been welcomed at clubs, the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals, and concert halls around the world, earning critical acclaim and devoted audiences.

Future Spells and more

The Rabbit Box gathers Future Spells, 600 Salad Bowls, and Dreams Down Deep for a night riffing on the role of machines in shaping what counts. Future Spells, an experimental ambient duo formed by Luna Moss members Char Easter and Dan Blossom, threads airy, dreamlike vocals through dub-leaning electronics. For this appearance, Blossom sculpts live textures in Ableton Live, guiding winding improvisations toward a tranquil, hypnotic space, with the possibility of a guest dancer. 600 Salad Bowls centers the writing of Helena Rogers, letting each line be heard clearly as delivery slips between spoken and sung. Minimal, computer-built backdrops created with John Rogers and Eric Muhs provide a shimmering frame that contrasts with the fuller noise of her trio Student Nurse. Dreams Down Deep brings postmodern alternative rock founded by Seattle singer songwriter Randall Lorin Pape, drawing inspiration from Wim Wenders, Siouxsie Sioux, Jim Jarmusch, Nick Cave, Radiohead, Blonde Redhead, Bela Lugosi, and Bauhaus. The songs weave personal narrative with flashes of optimism against darker, end-times colors.

Electro Dance Class & Open Session - Donation Based. Dance to EDM!

Experience a donation-based Electro dance class paired with an open session at Shift Movement & Healing Arts, centered on moving to EDM. Electro emerged in the early 2000s at a Paris club and is driven by expressive armwork, blending elements of hip hop, vogue, glowsticking, disco, and popping into a fast, flowing style. Outside the dance community it was often mislabeled as Tecktonik, which was the name of a branded party that helped it go viral, while the dance itself has always been Electro. Half of the gathering is guided learning, starting with a warmup and foundational drills, variations, and short combos that build skills and conditioning. The remaining time opens the floor for practice, conversation, and individual feedback so you can refine your style at your own pace. The music spans Electro, Electro House, Electroclash, Techno, Bass House, Trance, House, and other four-on-the-floor sounds, and the style also adapts well to Hip Hop, Bass, drum and bass, and Disco. Electro offers a dynamic way to interact with EDM, with interval-like pacing that delivers a solid cardio workout. It can be a refreshing alternative if shuffling is not your preference or if you want something different from typical gym or dance fitness routines. Contributions are pay-what-you-can with no obligation if finances are tight. Please bring a refillable water bottle, as filtered water is available. Wear clean indoor non-marking shoes and leave outdoor footwear off the dance floor. Help maintain a considerate space by avoiding smoking, vaping, alcohol, and strong fragrances, and direct any concerns to the instructor. Doors may lock from the outside, so arriving on time helps with entry. For access details and communication, updates are handled through Instagram rather than Meetup.

Madman Summer '26 Reverse Coed 4's League (Wednesdays)

Madman Volleyball hosts an outdoor reverse coed 4's league at Maple Leaf Reservoir Park for PNW players looking to take advantage of the pleasant summer weather. Teams are made up of two women and two men, and reverse rules apply. If a male player contacts the ball while in front of the 10 foot line, the touch must clearly go up before it goes down. Men may not attack from in front of that line and must jump from behind it to hit. Men may block men, and women may block any opponent. Going under the net is allowed if there is no interference and no safety risk. Any contact with the net counts as a fault, even if the ball was down first. Double contacts on serve receive are not allowed. Open hand tips and directional blocking are not permitted. Open hand set overs are allowed only when the shoulders are square. The league runs on Wednesday evenings for eight weeks, with seven weeks of round robin play followed by two evenings of elimination brackets seeded from round robin results. Each night features two best‑of‑three matches to 21, 21, and 15, totaling 14 round robin matches before bracket play. Teams provide and set up a net every other week. Rental nets are available for the full season, with access to the net system throughout the summer. The cost is $280 per team, and paid entries secure spots.

Bluegrass Jam at the Machine House Brewery

Machine House Brewery hosts a welcoming bluegrass jam open to musicians of any age and experience level. The circle focuses on traditional jam etiquette and keeping the music friendly, with a pre-called Song of the Week to anchor each session. Helpful resources are maintained for participants, including charts, recordings, playlists, and a history of tunes that have been called. Newer players who can keep rhythm on basic progressions are welcome, and familiarity with the Nashville Number System is useful since many tunes are called by number. Leading a song is optional, and during larger gatherings some participants may be seated in an outer circle. Sheet music and chord charts are allowed as long as they do not obstruct others, though playing from memory is encouraged when possible. Attendance is free. Supporting the venue by purchasing beverages and tipping the staff is customary. Songs from outside the genre are fine when played in a bluegrass style, and the host may decline any selection to keep the jam moving. Original tunes are acceptable if they are straightforward bluegrass numbers. Dogs are allowed, participants under 21 may attend, and outside food is welcome. Members of the Outlander Progressive Bluegrass Social Club receive a $1 discount per drink with a valid membership card presented at the bar.

Walk on the Beach | Summer Pinball Series

Spend the summer playing pinball across two Alki arcades, Gary's Place and West Seattle Arcade. This weekly series runs the same night in both rooms and the walk between them is part of the experience, since you choose your machines at either location. Check in at Gary's Place, then head into pick-your-game head-to-head matches with up to five rounds of two games each. Each game win is worth one point, sweeping both games earns three. Extra balls are limited to thirty seconds. You cannot select the same machine twice in a night and you cannot choose a machine that is already in use. The top three finishers receive payouts each night. The series awards points every week and only your best five nights count toward the standings, so missing a week is not a problem and you can start any time. The top half of the standings advance to the Series Finals and the finals prize pool grows by five dollars per player each night across the season. Entry is five dollars per night and all ages are welcome.

In Spite of Ourselves: A Celebration of the Music of John Prine brings together multi-instrumentalist and producer Doug Cox, Juno Award-winning musicians Tom and Kalissa Landa from the Paperboys, and Nashville and Vancouver Island songwriter and artist Steve Mitchell for a tribute to Prine’s songbook. Acoustic Alchemy

Dimitriou's Jazz Alley hosts a four-night run by Acoustic Alchemy, a contemporary instrumental jazz group performing five shows. The current lineup features Greg Carmichael on nylon-string guitar, Miles Gilderdale on steel-string acoustic and electric guitars, Jay Rowe on keyboards, Gary Grainger on bass, and Greg Grainger on drums and percussion, with one evening offering an additional second set. Formed in the UK and shaped across the United States, the band has earned three Grammy nominations and spent more than three decades expanding the expressive range of the acoustic guitar. Their music draws from jazz, folk, rock, and global influences to reach listeners across styles. The story began in the mid-1980s with guitarists Nick Webb and Simon James self-releasing an album under the name Acoustic Alchemy. After James departed to study flamenco, Webb partnered with Greg Carmichael, first creating music for Virgin Airlines before signing with MCA for the 1987 debut Red Dust & Spanish Lace. A successful period on GRP followed, highlighted by the Grammy-nominated Reference Point, and later chapters included a move to EMI’s Higher Octave for releases such as Aart in 2001, their best-selling album and also Grammy-nominated. Milestones since then include the double live collection Live in London in 2014, featuring material from Roseland alongside favorites from their catalog, and the 2018 studio album Thirty Three and A Third. In recent years, the group has solidified around Carmichael, Gilderdale, Rowe, and the Grainger brothers, continuing to chart an adventurous course in contemporary jazz.

FlowShop: Open Jam

An open, unstructured jam at Volunteer Park Dahlia Garden brings together flow artists, jugglers, dancers, and other movement practitioners for practice, play, and community. Friendly faces create a welcoming space where all backgrounds, skills, and experience levels are encouraged. Many attendees enjoy sharing skills, so informal teaching often happens. All props and movement modalities are welcome, and extra props are available for those without their own. To find the group, navigate to the Volunteer Park Dahlia Garden. With the Volunteer Park Conservatory behind you, look for the gathering on the grassy hill below. Accessible parking spaces are available in the park, and the meeting area can be reached without stairs or curbs, though the grass is sloped. Parking is generally available near the site, with additional street parking outside the park if needed. This program is operated by Seattle Flow Arts Collective, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations help keep the jam financially accessible and support artists. Please stay home if you have symptoms of illness or recent exposure, and be mindful of consent by asking about boundaries before hugging or touching others.

PNW VW WEEKEND Vintage Volkswagen Meet Show & Swap #43

Now in its 43rd year, this Pacific Northwest Volkswagen weekend brings enthusiasts together for a casual kickoff, a rain-or-shine show and swap, and a relaxed finale. The weekend begins with The Burger Meat cruise-in at Magnuson Cafe & Brewery in Magnuson Park on Lake Washington. It is a public meet with first-come, first-served parking and no registration required. All Volkswagens are welcome, whether new or old, air cooled, water cooled, or electric. This gathering is a friendly hangout rather than a judged show, and safe, respectful behavior is expected. The centerpiece is the PNW VW Show & Swap at Shoreline College, featuring 17 vehicle classes that include water-cooled models from 2001 and earlier. General admission is $5, with free entry for ages 15 and under. An early entrance ticket is available for $10 for those who want to access the swap earlier. The show runs rain or shine and wraps up with awards and a grand prize raffle, along with additional raffle drawings, door prizes, and swag for ticket holders. Pre-registration is required to display a vehicle, and the event is organized by volunteers. The weekend concludes with Dubs & Brew at Watts Brewing Company, an all-Volkswagen show, shine, and swap that is not judged and does not award trophies. There is no fee to show a car, no fee to swap, and admission to look around is free. A beer garden and food are available. As with the other gatherings, reckless driving, excessive revving, and other unsafe or disruptive behavior are not permitted.
