Ricardo Ruiz: Poetry Reading and Reception

Created in collaboration with Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) as part of Handwork 2026 and National Poetry Month, this evening features poetry and storytelling with Ricardo Ruiz that centers the lives of his Mexican farmworker community in Eastern Washington. His debut collection, We Had Our Reasons: Poems by Ricardo Ruiz and Other Hardworking Mexicans from Eastern Washington, recipient of the 2023 Washington State Book Award for Poetry, gathers vivid bilingual pieces co-created with 13 community members and highlights journeys of migration, the realities of labor, and enduring resilience. The gathering opens with a reception in the BIMA Bistro, where attendees can purchase books and have them signed by Ricardo Ruiz, with Eagle Harbor Books offering copies of We Had Our Reasons. The program then moves to the BIMA Auditorium for a reading. Ruiz appears with selected students from his BARN workshop “Portals of the Poetic Self: The Five Senses” to share their work, followed by a question and answer session with the audience.

Design a living succulent wreath using real plants at a workshop at Gathered by Josephine's. The session covers how to assemble, plant, and care for your wreath so it stays healthy through Washington's changing seasons, with proper care allowing it to thrive for a year or more. It is suitable for beginners and experienced gardeners and offers a creative way to bring greenery into your home. All materials are provided, including an 18 inch grapevine wreath form and 10 to 12 succulents in assorted sizes. Bringing your own gardening gloves is optional.

Create a seasonal planter in a hands-on workshop that turns a plain clay pot into a personalized piece for the garden. Over about two hours, you will form decorative details with clay using IOD moulds, attach them to the pot, then chalk paint, dry brush, and seal the surface for outdoor use. All supplies and materials are provided, so there is nothing to bring. You will complete the project during class and take it home at the end. A workshop at The Plant Shop Bainbridge explores the quiet discipline of ikebana, a centuries-old Japanese art form centered on minimalism, asymmetry, and the relationship between nature, people, and the container. Rather than Western styles, it welcomes imperfection through the spirit of wabi-sabi, a theme explored in earlier workshops. Jean Ferguson, a community member and experienced gardener and teacher, guides the practice and shares her approach and flowers.

Experience a community drum circle at Rimbert Illustration that blends gentle facilitation with free form hand drumming. The circle runs about two hours and fosters connection, creativity, and shared rhythm. All experience levels are supported, from first time drummers to longtime players. Instruments are available on site, and participants may bring their own hand drums or other percussion. Expect grounding rhythms, attentive listening, playful expression, and a collective sound. This is donation based, pay what you wish, and cost will not prevent participation. The aim is to keep rhythm, sound, and community available to everyone.

Create a sparkling crushed glass artwork at Sisters' Cider House in a relaxed, creative setting. Choose your design and project size when purchasing a ticket, then use a wide selection of hand dyed glass to bring it to life. Each piece is finished with a clear, fume free sealer for lasting shine. All materials and tools are provided, including a laser cut wood frame and a window suction cup for displaying your finished work. Deanna and Paul offer step by step guidance throughout the session. Tickets are sold per person and include one project. Pricing starts at $45 for a 6 inch mini project, with an option to upgrade to a 12 inch standard size for $60. The upgrade only changes the size of a single project and does not add an extra frame. Please purchase a ticket for everyone in your group so seats and supplies can be prepared accordingly. Most participants age 8 and up can complete the project without difficulty. Younger children may participate at a guardian’s discretion. Because real crushed glass is used, there is a small chance of a tiny poke or minor cut. Ciders are available for purchase from the venue, and outside food is welcome. The venue is kid friendly, with guests under 18 welcome when accompanied by an adult. Photos may be taken for party albums, and anyone who prefers not to be photographed can inform the facilitators at the start.

The bookstore sets aside time for quiet reading, sketching and other paper based art, tabletop games, and idea sharing. Admission is $5 in advance and includes a $5 coupon that can be used toward purchases at Saturday Swaps. Each week features a different focus. One week highlights quiet reading with a chance to chat afterward. Another invites artists to bring a sketchbook, watercolor kit, or other paper supplies. The next spotlights board and card games, whether you bring your own or take a seat at an open table. A later week gathers writers to share recent work and discuss works in progress. When a month has a fifth Thursday, a special workshop offers a creative project or class, and some sessions may add a materials or instructor fee. Events may be canceled if minimum attendance is not reached. If space remains, tickets can be purchased at the gate.

Designed as a one day, condensed alternative to the two day Joy of Chalk Paint Masterclass, this beginner friendly workshop at Locker61 introduces foundational chalk painting techniques influenced by Annie Sloan’s methods. Participants will practice achieving a smooth coat with waxing, try dry brushing and color blending, explore raised stenciling and ombré effects, and learn to mix their own custom colors. All supplies are provided, and lunch is included along with snacks, coffee, tea, and water, so there is nothing extra to bring. Group Hike to Gold Mtn Tin Mine

Set out on a recreational group hike from the Gold Creek Trailhead at Green Mountain to the Gold Mountain Tin Mine. A Discover Pass is required for parking. The route is considered easy overall, with one downhill stretch that is fairly steep. Basic orienteering will be part of the outing, and maps will be provided. Participants may go at their own pace and are not required to remain with the group. The group will gather at the far end of the parking lot, where the Frontline Preparedness crew will be staged. Expect pop-up moments and playful activities across the museum, plus themed DJ dance parties that keep the fun going. The format is drop-in, so families can participate at any time and make memories together.

Conifer and Crow One Year Anniversary

Conifer & Crow marks its first year with a festival-style celebration spanning the shop and the Polaris Theater’s backstage alley in Historic Port Orchard. The day centers on mysticism, minerals, and tattoo artistry, featuring visiting vendors, on-site tattooing, and complimentary mini tarot readings. A storewide discount of 13 percent is available throughout the event. A raffle offers a dozen gift baskets filled with mineral specimens chosen by the community, and inside the shop there is a dedicated Labradorite showcase created for the anniversary. Neighbors come together to honor Melanesian and Pacific Islander heritage at a community-led celebration that centers local voices. The program blends storytelling, visual art, and dance to highlight living traditions from Fiji, Vanuatu, and West Papua, showing how ancestral knowledge continues to shape life today. Experiences include stori telling that passes along personal and ancestral histories, Vanuatu sand drawing with symbolic patterns that map stories, kinship, and ties to land, the lively Fiji Lewa dance affirming identity and connection to vanua, and West Papuan dance expressing cultural memory, resilience, and sovereignty. Melanesian cultures and kastom are among the oldest continuously practiced Indigenous traditions, with deep roots that remain vibrant in the present. Everyone is welcome. Organizations involved include Melanesian Women Today, Fiji Women Association of Washington, and West Papua Campaign US.

A poetry reading and open mic at Bainbridge Public Library features guest reader Samyak Shertok. His debut collection, No Rhododendron from University of Pittsburgh Press, was selected by Kimiko Hahn for the AWP Donald Hall Prize for Poetry and was shortlisted for the PEN Open Book Award. His poems have appeared in The Cincinnati Review, The Gettysburg Review, The Iowa Review, The Kenyon Review, Poetry, Shenandoah, Waxwing, Best New Poets, and other publications. He has been a finalist for the National Poetry Series, the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize, and the Jake Adam York Prize, and he has received fellowships from Aspen Words, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. His honors include the Robert and Adele Schiff Award for Poetry, the Gulf Coast Prize in Poetry, and the Auburn Witness Poetry Prize. NWR SCCA Autocross Event #4 & PM Test n’ Tune

Bremerton Motorsports Park hosts a full day of autocross with morning competition runs followed by an afternoon test and tune. Drivers are placed into two run groups for both parts of the day, and each group is scheduled for a minimum of four runs. While one group is on course, the other supports the event with work duties. The morning includes site opening, check-in with work assignments and tech inspection, a guided course walk at the start line, a cutoff for walking, and a driver’s meeting. The afternoon test and tune features check-in and tech for new participants and a driver’s meeting before runs begin. Preregistration on scorekeeper opens 30 days in advance. Entry fees are $55 for a first entry in either session and $35 for a second entry. Non-members add a $15 weekend membership. If you do not preregister on scorekeeper there is a $10 on-site registration fee, and prepayment is optional. Cards are accepted for on-site payment.

Try your hand at trap shooting, one of the three major clay target disciplines. Participants will stand at five stations arranged in a semicircle behind a single trap house and take aim at targets launched away from them at varying angles. Bremerton Fan Zone Watch Party

Quincy Square hosts the closing celebration of the Bremerton Fan Zone series with a final watch party built around a live soccer match shown on a 20-foot LED screen, with teams still to be announced. Expect food trucks, a cookout-style atmosphere, music, and plenty of community spirit. Beer concessions will be available, and there will be interactive activities for fans throughout. Admission is free and the event welcomes everyone. It is organized by the Downtown Bremerton Association.

✨ Wine About It! Crushed Glass Art Party ✨

A creative night out awaits at Wine About It, where party facilitators Deanna and Paul guide a relaxed crushed glass art experience. Attendees choose a design and project size from a collection of laser cut wood frames, then use a rainbow of hand dyed crushed glass to craft a sparkling piece finished with a clear sealing potion for lasting shimmer. Every ticket covers one project and includes the frame in the selected size, all tools and materials, a window suction cup for easy display, and step by step instruction throughout the session. Most guests ages 8 and up can complete the project comfortably. Younger children are welcome at the discretion of their adults, keeping in mind this is real crushed glass and there is a small chance of a minor poke or cut. Seating and supplies are planned according to the number of tickets purchased, so each person in a group should reserve a spot. Pricing begins at $45 for the 6 inch Mini Project, with an optional upgrade to a 12 inch Standard Project for $60. The upgrade changes only the size of the single project and does not add an extra frame. Every ticket includes everything needed to make the artwork shine. Wine About It offers a variety of beverages and food, including non alcoholic options and charcuterie boards. The venue is kid friendly, and guests under 18 are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Photos may be taken for party albums, and anyone who prefers not to be photographed can let staff know at the start. The cancellation policy provides a full refund with at least 7 days notice, a Create and Sip Credit with at least 8 hours notice, and no credit for no shows or late cancellations. Cancellation instructions are included with the confirmation email. Private crushed glass art parties with Deanna and Paul can also be arranged.
