Teiku

Presented by Secret Planet Richmond at Reveler Experiences, Teiku offers music rooted in family memory and tradition. Co-leaders pianist Josh Harlow and percussionist Jonathan Barahal shape the band’s sound around Passover melodies carried within their Jewish Ukrainian families, learned by ear and preserved across generations. While many communities now share more standardized versions of these liturgical tunes, their households maintained distinctive variations that likely originated in ancestral villages. Although both grew up in Jewish communities, they rarely encountered others with family-specific songs. After meeting in the Detroit music scene, they found strong musical rapport, recognized their parallel histories, and founded Teiku to give these inherited melodies a new voice.

TRR Fredericksburg - Biweekly Richmond Lower James Intermediate Sessions

TRR Richmond hosts biweekly intermediate paddling sessions on the Lower James for Veterans. Advance sign up is required at least 24 hours ahead, and anyone who has not yet paddled the Lower James with TRR must be cleared for the necessary skills before taking part. These outings are intended for paddlers ready for Class III whitewater. Bring your own equipment and arrive with confident ferrying, eddy turns, solid edge control, and a dependable combat roll. If you need gear, arrange it with the TRR Fredericksburg staff beforehand because nothing is stored at the Richmond meeting spot. Plans depend on river levels and weather. If the water rises above six feet the session shifts to the Upper James, and any change or weather-related cancellation will be posted on the Facebook page. Final decisions about location and whether a session runs are made by the trip point of contact with conditions and participant skill in mind. The group meets at the takeout to set shuttle, then heads to the put in, so arrive dressed and ready to launch. To register, email pam.devine@teamriverrunner.org at least a day in advance. If you have not paddled the Lower James with Pam, include the rivers and levels you have run and note whether you have a reliable combat roll. Beginners who have their own gear may also reach out to discuss potential future runs on the Upper James.

Carytown Sunday Morning Ride

A classic Richmond fast group ride designed as a demanding workout over about 40 miles, built around two sustained efforts of roughly 15 to 20 minutes each. The group rolls out calmly from the city, stays together, stops at red lights, and follows traffic laws, with a brief nature break at Osborne Turnpike. The first hard section runs from Osborne to Kingsland in a rotating paceline and ends with a sprint at Kingsland and WRVA Road. Riding is neutral through Battlefield Park with a short stop at Charles City Road. The second effort takes place on the Charles City Road section in another rotating paceline, finishing with a sprint just before the railroad crossing at Monahan Road, followed by an easy return to the city. This is a full drop ride, with typical speeds of about 15 to 20 mph during the calm sections and 25 mph or more during the efforts. Riders should have the route saved and be prepared to navigate home if they are separated from the group. The format repeats weekly. The ride is canceled if it is raining.

American Football

American Football brings its intricate, emotionally searching sound to The National alongside IAN SWEET. Their earliest album became a lasting touchstone for listeners well beyond the band’s beginnings, and their expanded catalog carries that legacy forward with a fuller, more confident approach. Bass now deepens the arrangements, and the multi-instrumental work of Mike and Nate Kinsella fuels performances that land every subtle shift with assurance. The set blends breezy shuffles and precise, quick rhythms with sweeping guitar figures built from arpeggios and harmonics, and drum fills that feel measured yet driving. The music maintains a cohesive mood while showcasing vivid details, from the swagger of Born to Lose, to a handclap-centered break and Phil Collins-inspired fills in I’ve Been Lost For So Long, to the 80s pop sheen of Desire Gets in the Way, and a bridge that briefly takes center stage in Instincts are The Enemy. The songs explore the tension between meeting the expectations of adulthood and holding onto honest self-expression, returning to familiar spaces with a more reflective gaze. All ages are welcome. Film Break Society Richmond brings its monthly showcase of new independent features to Studio Two Three. This screening focuses on a close Dominican American community in the Bronx and follows Rico, played by Juan Collado, as he spends the summer hustling by selling illicit nutcracker cocktails from a cooler and chasing girls without much concern. When his teenage girlfriend, Destiny, portrayed by Destiny Checo, starts staying with him and his family, their small apartment becomes the backdrop for a messy young relationship, and both are pushed toward the realities of growing up too fast in a city that does not slow down. Proceeds support Film Break Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to presenting new independents and restorations on the big screen.

Even Superheroes Face Addiction - FREE Support Group featuring special guest Yancy Butler

Comic book stories have long acknowledged that even heroes can face addiction, with characters like Iron Man and Red Arrow confronting their own struggles. Building on that honest perspective, actress Yancy Butler, who led the comic-inspired TV series Witchblade during its two-season run on TNT, will share her personal journey with alcoholism, the halt of the show’s production, and the years she spent working toward recovery. Now well into her recovery, she will speak in Richmond, and local resources will be available for those interested in beginning their own path to sobriety. This gathering is presented by Geek Wellness Education, a 501c3 nonprofit that uses the worlds of sci-fi, horror, and superheroes to open conversations about important topics. It is designed as a relaxed, secular support group and will take place in the game room of a retro toy store, with thanks to Toy Lair for providing the space. Parking is available at Toy Lair, in the lots of the neighboring businesses, and on the street behind the stores. Tickets are free and limited to 50 people, and attendees are asked to claim a spot only if they plan to be there.
