Afterglow BrewingPlein Air Trilogy: Hague, Stockley & NEON with Terry Wylie
This three-week watercolor class is devoted to painting outdoors, inviting participants to experience plein air as a direct way to capture light, atmosphere, and the energy of working from life. Each session takes place outside at locations within a short walk of d’Art Center, including the historic Hague by the Chrysler Museum, Stockley Gardens, and the NEON District, offering a mix of architecture, gardens, streetscapes, and urban views. The focus is on simplifying complex scenes, responding to changing conditions, and building confidence through direct observation. Because the series is brief, painting begins on location right away. If weather intervenes, the group meets at d’Art Center to paint a still life that reinforces plein air essentials such as value organization, color temperature, and clear composition. Participants explore how to see like a plein air painter by reducing scenes to strong shapes and value patterns, commit to a lighting plan for efficient progress, mix color that reflects natural light while avoiding overworked passages, and use portable methods like purposeful brushwork and limited palettes to work quickly. Guidance also covers how to finish in the field by recognizing when a painting is resolved. Each meeting includes time painting on location, an instructor demonstration, conversation about composition, individualized feedback, and a group critique and wrap-up, all without the need for extensive travel.
