Roots & Routes

Roots & Routes at Historic Smithfield features two talks that explore why some of the earliest New River Valley settlers crossed the Atlantic, what they built, and what they damaged after arriving. The program looks closely at a founding family of the region, tracing the circumstances that brought them to the Virginia frontier and the complex, sometimes contradictory legacy they left behind. Together the presentations focus on the Prestons and encourage thoughtful reflection on the ambitions and tensions woven into early American settlement. This free program takes place at the Pavilion at Historic Smithfield. The venue is ADA accessible, and accommodations are available upon request. It is part of Historic Smithfield programming that examines the region’s many-layered history and welcomes history enthusiasts, local residents, and anyone curious about the past.

Storytelling

A monthly storytelling gathering hosted by author Wendy Welch centers this edition on the theme Artifacts and welcomes both storytellers and listeners. Tellers are invited to share a folktale, an original piece, a personal narrative, or a family history, and are asked to sign up in advance by email. Stories must be shared with respect for all people and communities. They are spoken rather than read, and poems or songs are welcome ways to tell a tale. Each session features a theme that participants may interpret in their own way, with the next theme announced at the event and on the website. Listeners help create a considerate atmosphere by choosing quiet snacks, silencing phones, and staying seated unless there is an urgent need to move. Stories may be sacred, funny, reflective, or explore difficult topics, and they may include strong language without content warnings. Bringing your own snacks is welcome.
