Jewelry and Silversmithing Class with Rene on Wednesday mornings

Explore the art of metalsmithing in a hands-on class led by Rene Venegas, a 16th‑generation silversmith. Learn essential techniques for designing and fabricating jewelry while working with a variety of tools and materials. Create pieces such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings, with guidance tailored to your experience level. The class is structured so skills can build over multiple sessions, and it also accommodates a single visit. One-time project options include a silver band ring, a silver band with a cabochon stone, simple earrings, a copper or silver bracelet with or without a cabochon, and a simple pendant with or without a cabochon. Registration covers the use of studio tools and equipment. Metal and stones are purchased separately or may be brought from home. Each two-hour session is $40, or choose a three-class option for $100. Class size is limited to about four or five participants to allow for ample one-on-one instruction. The class is geared toward adults, and mature teens and pre-teens are also welcome. Sessions take place at The Local Artisan Collective in downtown Ogden, and private classes and parties are available. Payment can be made in person at the shop or online. For a three-class punch pass, pay for a single class now and the remaining two will be prorated at the studio. Cancellations more than seven days in advance receive a full refund minus a $5 fee. There are no refunds within seven days of the start. If registering on a phone, turning the device sideways may help, and computers tend to work best. For more information, call or text 801-686-5351. Rene’s family traces its craft back to the early days of the Americas, including ancestor Felipe Venegas, who worked on early Dominican Republic cathedrals and helped strike some of the first European coins in the New World. He has taught jewelry and silversmithing at Weber State for 15 years, and his work has been highlighted by The Standard Examiner, The Signpost, KUTV Inside the Story, FOX 13 Good Morning Utah, The Salt Project, and KTVX Good Things Utah. He is a recipient of the Ogden City Mayor’s Art Award for Folk Art.

Fix It Day Jewelry & Clothing Mending Repairs Done By 16th Generation Silversmith Rene & wife Jenny

This repair day welcomes well-loved pieces for on-site attention, with jewelry work by 16th generation silversmith Rene Venegas and clothing mending by Jenny Venegas. Rene addresses missing stones, ring resizing, prong tightening, bead and pearl restringing, and other restoration needs for silver, gold, brass, or copper items, including select home décor. If there is a single earring, he may be able to create a companion to complete the pair. Jenny provides practical fixes such as darning socks, patching jeans or other pants, sewing on buttons, and similar basic repairs. Prices depend on the work required. Some projects can be completed during the visit, while others may take a few days. Attendees can speak directly with the artists to review options and learn how they or other makers can help. Hosted at The Local Artisan Collective. Rene’s background spans generations, with a family that arrived early from Spain to the Americas. His ancestor, Felipe Venegas, served as a silversmith for early cathedrals in the Dominican Republic and stamped the first European coins in the New World. He learned the craft as a child in his father’s silver shop in Bogota, Colombia, has spent 15 years teaching jewelry and silversmithing at Weber State, and has been featured in multiple media outlets. Jenny creates comforting handmade goods through her brand Aunt GG’s, inspired by her great-aunts Grace and Glady, and continues to explore sewing, quilting, embroidery, canning, and related domestic arts. Appointments are also available beyond regular repair hours, and drop-offs are welcome for estimates and recommendations. No registration is required.
