Bo's Barn DancehallFiddles, Faith & Frontier Communities
Texas historian Kurt Terry and Scottish fiddler Colin MacLeod present a program that intertwines frontier narratives, live fiddle music, and the faith practices carried by Scots settlers from Salado into the wider Southwest. Through spoken story, projected images, and spirited tunes, the experience explores the sounds and communities that shaped life in nineteenth century Texas and the broader western frontier. The journey follows the movement of people and ideas along historic routes to show how music and worship traveled together, influencing daily life through hymns, fiddle tunes, communal singing, dances, and shared gatherings. Terry, a Professor of History at Temple College with degrees from Baylor University and Stephen F. Austin State University and doctoral work at Oklahoma State University, brings research on Texas frontier communities and experience presenting at educational conferences, including a session with the Texas State Historical Association. MacLeod, often called the Celtic Fiddle Guru, began playing at age seven within a family tradition of ceilidhs, earned Grade 8 Violin Distinction, performed with Celtic groups in Australia, and has taught by ear across Scotland, Australia, and the United States since 2007, drawing on research into how music shaped Scottish emigrant communities.
