At Williamson Preserve, this eight hour masterclass focuses on the art and utility of wilderness shelters. It is designed for backpackers seeking a lighter, more adaptable setup, car campers who want real living space when rain moves in, and anyone interested in building protection from the elements using natural materials. The emphasis is on shelter as both survival infrastructure and everyday comfort, showing how a well rigged tarp can turn a wet outing into a comfortable camp with more room, airflow, and flexibility than a typical tent. Through extended hands on practice, participants set up, test, refine, and rebuild until choosing the right knot and placement becomes second nature. Instruction covers critical rigging skills such as ridgelines, secure anchors, tensioning systems, and lashings that allow sturdy structures without hardware. Multiple tarp configurations are explored, including simple A frames, doors up lean tos, and fully enclosed storm ready layouts, with guidance on balancing airflow and protection, visibility and privacy, and speed and stability. Environment specific adaptations are addressed, including techniques for sand where standard stakes fail, snow where shelter adds insulation, and other conditions that shape decisions about anchors, drainage, and conserving heat. Natural shelter building receives in depth attention, from reading the land and selecting a site to working with debris, boughs, and bark to create an overnight worthy structure that keeps you warm and dry. Core site selection principles are woven throughout, including how to assess drainage, wind direction, overhead hazards such as widow makers, and terrain features that offer natural cover or windbreaks. This is an active outdoor intensive, so expect walking, crawling, bending, and sitting while practicing in real conditions. Participants may bring their own survival kit to test. There is no on site restroom, so plan to use the woods. Recommended preparations include a comfortable day pack with room for provided gear, lunch, water, and snacks, with water available for refills. Sunscreen and insect repellent are suggested, as well as a small camp seat or chair. Wear layers that manage body temperature and bring rain gear for changing weather. Tarps or other materials for experimentation are welcome, along with a notebook, pen, and pencil.
