A shakedown is a practice day hike taken before an overnight backpacking trip, so pack as if you were going for one night to see what you can comfortably carry and to fine-tune your setup. Plan to bring a backpacking pack, ideally with a hip belt, and include shelter such as a tent or a simple tarp arrangement, water and food suitable for an overnight, a small repair kit with basics like tape and a knife, a fire source, a first aid kit, a dedicated light like a headlamp, insulating layers with a change of clothes, sun protection, and navigation, with a printed map recommended. To practice overnight basics, consider a sleeping pad or yoga mat, a sleeping bag or even a sheet or blanket, toiletries, clean socks, and optional comforts like a sit pad or camp chair, along with any small personal items you typically enjoy, such as instant coffee and a mug. There is no camping on this outing. If you are unsure how to pack or whether your gear is right for you, bring what you have and get guidance on organizing your backpack and evaluating your kit.
