At the Art Center of Corpus Christi Lockett Gallery, private crochet lessons with Amber Buhidar provide one-on-one guidance for ages 9 and older. Instruction covers the essentials, including how to hold a hook, manage tension, start a chain, make single crochet stitches, and turn your work, along with helpful tips that simplify learning. These sessions suit complete beginners as well as returning makers who want to refresh skills, get advice on a current project, or focus on a specific stitch. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yarn and hook so they can continue at home, and a coffee or tea is welcome. Hooks and yarn will be available to use during the lesson. Left-handed learners are asked to inform the instructor in advance so she can prepare left-handed techniques. Two sessions are available. Amber is a self-taught fiber artist with eight years of experience, moving from blankets to beanies and ear warmers, and now to plush creations sold online and at local markets. The Art Center does not offer class exchanges, and refunds are provided only if the Art Center cancels the class.

"Anemnesis: Evoking my Father" by Kathleen Baker Pittman

Presented by K Space Contemporary, this immersive installation by San Antonio artist Kathleen Baker Pittman centers on a Windmill-class sailboat built by her father and reimagined as art, inviting reflection on remembrance, inheritance, and family history. Her father, Bill Baker, developed a flotation approach for this boat class that later informed future designs, and when the vessel could no longer sail, Pittman transformed its parts into a vehicle for memory. Blending printmaking, sculpture, and reclaimed nautical components, she deconstructs the boat and rebuilds it as an environment that holds lived experience. Translucent linocuts drawn from family photos are mounted on the original sidewalls so they can be seen from multiple viewpoints. Voile sails carry images printed from reduction woodcut plates, cyanotypes trace photographs of the boat in use, and a painted stern captures the churn of a wake, together evoking the feeling of being on open water. The title, rooted in the Greek idea of recollection, underscores how objects can preserve and revive personal histories. The presentation includes an opening aligned with the community ArtWalk and a meet-the-artist reception. Pittman holds an MS in Art from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and her multidisciplinary practice spans printmaking, painting, collage, mixed media, and installation. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo show at the Carver Cultural Center in San Antonio and a two-person exhibition at Bismarck Gallery, and her work appears in collections such as the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán, the Museum of Printing History in Houston, the University of Texas at Austin, and Print Australia. Since retiring from teaching in 2022, she has remained active through a residency at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, workshops in Oaxaca, curating Printmaking from San Antonio and Beyond at Bihl Haus Arts, and serving as a docent at the McNay Art Museum. K Space Contemporary is a nonprofit dedicated to presenting and promoting contemporary art, supported by AEP Texas and grants from the Coastal Bend Community Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Leading Ladies Gala - She’s Iconic

Hosted by the Portland, Aransas Pass, Ingleside, and Sinton Chambers, this gala shines a light on the power, influence, and impact of women through an engaging, interactive celebration. Drawing inspiration from iconic figures who have shaped culture, entertainment, fashion, business, and generations of leadership, the evening focuses on qualities such as resilience, authenticity, courage, creativity, and influence. A centerpiece of the program is the “Choose Your Icon” table experience, where sponsors and table hosts select a renowned woman who inspires them and design a themed table reflecting her legacy, personality, style, and impact. Examples range from Dolly Parton and Selena Quintanilla to Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn, Beyoncé, and others, with each table telling its own story while contributing to an elegant, unified atmosphere. Guests can look forward to creativity, inspiration, entertainment, and meaningful recognition of women who continue to shape communities and the wider world. Organizers aim to create an experience that is fun, memorable, and uplifting, with every table honoring a woman whose story has empowered others and showing that leadership appears in many forms. Each table is uniquely crafted by its sponsors and guests in tribute to their chosen icon, using imaginative décor to highlight legacy, style, personality, and impact. Attendees are encouraged to dress in theme, adding to a glamorous celebration of the women who have inspired generations. A highlight on the Chambers’ calendar, the Leading Ladies Gala recognizes outstanding women and their contributions to the community. This year’s theme invites participants to celebrate icons of the past and present as well as the iconic women among us today. Businesses, organizations, and groups are encouraged to purchase a table, choose an icon, and bring a vision to life through creative décor, fashion, and storytelling, whether inspired by a music legend, actress, humanitarian, business leader, or cultural figure.
