Wildlife Wonderings

Wildlife Wonderings spotlights the Plain-bellied Watersnake, a widespread, nonvenomous colubrid often mistaken for the cottonmouth. Common around Jesse H. Jones Park, this stout, mostly patternless snake is best identified by its uniform belly, which can range from beige to reddish tones and may be edged by a thin pale line where the underside meets the darker back. Adults typically measure about 24 to 40 inches, and subspecies vary in color from dark brown and gray to olive or nearly black, with some lighter snakes showing faint dorsal markings. Explore its broad distribution across the southeastern United States and its preference for wetlands and permanent freshwater, including creeks, rivers, swamps, floodplains, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, dams, and canals. The program highlights seasonal behavior such as basking, swimming, and traveling over land during the warm months, the tendency to rest on overhanging branches for a quick escape, and the risks faced during road crossings. Feeding habits include tadpoles, frogs and toads, fish, crayfish, aquatic insects, hatchling turtles, and carrion, taken by active hunting or underwater ambush and swallowed without constriction or venom. Reproduction is live bearing, with litters often around 18 but sometimes much larger. Discussion also covers predators like large fish, other snakes, and wading or raptor birds, along with defensive responses that may include striking or releasing a strong musk, and the species’ habit of fleeing over land when threatened. Presented in the Nature Center, this Wildlife Wonderings program is free and open to all ages.

Wildlife Wonderings - Gulf Coast Toad

Explore the Gulf Coast Toad, Incilius valliceps, in a Wildlife Wonderings program that focuses on a common amphibian encountered at Jesse Jones Park & Nature Center. This medium-sized species ranges from 1 to 4 inches long and is native to Texas, eastern and southeastern Mexico, and Central America as far south as Costa Rica. Its back varies from nearly black to shades of brown and gray, with a distinctive white or yellowish stripe along the center and sometimes lighter patches on the sides, while the underside is yellow or cream. The back bears small tubercles, and the underside is normally devoid of them. It has the most extensive ridging of any toad in its geographic range, with ridges extending from the nose to the back of the head and a branch that wraps around the back side of the eye. The program highlights where this toad is found, including open grassland, semi-arid regions, light forest, and suburban backyards. It is typically near permanent water for spring breeding but can travel long distances while foraging for food. As an opportunistic carnivore, it feeds on small arthropods it can overpower and swallow. This program is free of charge and open to fans of Shakespeare and amphibian enthusiasts of all ages.

Wildlife Wonderings -- the North American River Otter

As part of the Wildlife Wonderings series, this program spotlights the North American river otter, Lontra canadensis, a species that delights visitors to Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center. Explore how this agile mammal is built for life in and around water, with dense insulating fur, webbed feet, a streamlined body and head, and a powerful tail that drives swift swimming. It can stay underwater for up to eight minutes. Long whiskers help locate prey in murky conditions, and clawed feet provide a sure grip on slippery catches. On land it can run near 15 miles per hour and can slide even faster. Playful behaviors like sliding in mud or snow, tail chasing, water play, and burrowing serve to build social bonds and help young otters practice hunting skills. Learn about size and appearance, with adults reaching 3 to 4 feet in length including the tail and weighing 11 to 30 pounds, males typically larger. The tail accounts for roughly one third of total length. Fur is generally dark brown above with lighter coloring on the belly and face. The session also examines range and habitat across most of Canada and the United States, with occurrences in Mexico along the Rio Grande and Colorado River delta. River otters thrive in ponds, marshes, lakes, rivers, and estuaries in a wide range of climates as long as food is abundant and water is clean and relatively undisturbed. They often share landscapes with beavers. Dens sit along the water in abandoned burrows or hollows, with underwater entrances for easy access. Predators can include bobcats, alligators, coyotes, raptors, and other large hunters. Diet and behavior topics include a varied menu of fish, crayfish, crabs, frogs, birds and their eggs, reptiles such as turtles, aquatic plants, and occasional small mammals like muskrats or rabbits. Their fast metabolism means they eat frequently. Communication involves whistles, yelps, growls, and screams, along with touch, body posture, and scent marking from glands near the tail that produce a strong musky odor. Reproduction and life history are covered as well, including breeding in late winter or early spring, litters of one to three pups that are born blind and begin swimming at about two months, a mostly solitary or small-group lifestyle, and a lifespan of eight to nine years in the wild with records up to 21 years in human care. The program also addresses conservation history. Heavy trapping and hunting for fur in the 19th and 20th centuries reduced numbers and eliminated the species from some areas, while reintroduction and protection have supported recoveries. Habitat loss and polluted waterways remain significant threats. The program takes place in the Nature Center and is free and open to all ages.
