Celebrate the spirit of spring with a 10-week yoga series that highlights renewal, curiosity, and connection. Hosted at Sturgis Yoga in the Massa Berry Building, each session is guided by a different guest teacher who shares a practice shaped by their own voice, interests, and approach, creating a dynamic experience across the season. Her passion for both subjects began early, inspired by a hobbyist-photographer father and a mother devoted to native blooms. She is the author of Wildflowers of the Wildcat Hills, Including Scotts Bluff National Monument and Wildflowers of the Black Hills. During this talk she will share stories from the field, insights from her photography, and an appreciation for the flora that make this landscape biologically rich. Love, Loss, and What I Wore

Created by Nora and Delia Ephron from Ilene Beckerman’s book, this award-winning play unfolds through a series of monologues and brief interludes that explore how particular items of clothing can spark vivid memories of people, places, and emotions. A rotating cast of five women takes on multiple roles to share comic missteps, personal triumphs, and the milestones that come with growing up, all told with humor and clear perspective. It earned a Drama Desk Award and the Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play, and it became the second longest-running show at the Westside Theater in New York. Coverage from the Los Angeles Times observed that the Ephrons broaden Beckerman’s stories into revealing confessions, showing how wardrobes can challenge, reassure, and inspire, with garments acting as time capsules for past identities and hopes. Kathy White, Maegan Detlefs, Kelly Niederwerder, Stephanie Wiegand, and Sarah Burckhard bring these stories to life under the direction of Todd Jones. Recommended for ages 13 and up due to adult language and content. Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatist Play Service.

Women On Wheels #3 of 3

The final ride in this three-part spring series sets out from Sawyer Brewing with two loop options of approximately 50 or 60 miles that travel toward St. Onge and Belle Fouche before returning to the start. Designed as an all-women gravel outing, it caps a progressive training journey that builds endurance and confidence. Riders can choose from three pace groups to match experience and fitness levels: A at 13 to 15 mph, B at 12 to 13 mph, and C at 10 to 12 mph. Each group is led by a ride leader who helps maintain the designated pace and offers support along the way, with planned regrouping points and set wait times to keep participants connected. A finish line celebration at Sawyer Brewing welcomes participants back with a complimentary refreshment and a chance to recognize the dedication that went into the series. The broader program also features off-bike learning, including mental preparation sessions and a bike-specific mat Pilates class hosted by Sweat Method Studios at C2 Wellness Center to support mobility, strength, and riding efficiency. Participants are encouraged to arrive ready with a gravel-appropriate bike, adequate food and hydration, a flat repair kit with a spare tube and multi-tool, weather-appropriate clothing, closed-toe shoes, and a helmet. Bringing a GPS device or riding with someone who has one is recommended, and a downloadable route is provided to participants in advance. Checking in early, following the rules of the road, supporting ride leaders, and looking out for fellow riders all contribute to a positive group experience. This challenge focuses on personal growth, camaraderie, and advancing gravel endurance goals, and suits riders who can comfortably cover 30 miles at roughly a 10 mph average on gravel.

Supporting Mental Health: Caring for Ourself and Others

This session focuses on supporting mental health for oneself and for others, especially in the face of later life changes such as bereavement, shifts in health, and disruptions to routine. Participants reflect on personal beliefs about mental health and consider how stigma can shape conversations and care. The discussion explores how to recognize when someone could use a caring listener, ways to speak up because support is a shared responsibility, and community resources that can help. Practical self care tools are introduced, with an emphasis on small, sustainable steps that lead to meaningful change. The session encourages involvement of loved ones. It uses the A.I.D. training model from the Kent State University Center for Public Policy and Health and is presented by the Lawrence County Coalition, a grant funded nonprofit organization.

Led by Julie, this beginner-friendly watercolor class opens with creating a personal color wheel using a newly provided paint set, giving students a useful reference for how each pigment looks on paper and a base for discussing color theory and color mixing. These exercises bring out blooms, texture, and flowing movement that are distinctive to watercolor, resulting in colorful and spontaneous pieces. The class lasts two hours and is recommended for participants 13 years and older. Additional classes will follow, and once the introductory kit is obtained, future sessions are offered at a lower cost. Multiple session options are available.

Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer's

A film and discussion program explores practical ways to support brain health and understand dementia. The documentary Alzheimer’s: What You Can Do draws on current research and expert perspectives to question common beliefs and show how daily habits, early recognition, and proactive care may help lower risk. After the screening, Dr. Stephen Manlove, a Rapid City psychiatrist, leads a presentation and conversation on early signs, treatment approaches, and strategies that assist individuals and families facing cognitive decline. The program welcomes caregivers, people concerned about memory changes, and anyone seeking clear, useful information. It aims to share practical guidance, build understanding, and encourage open community conversation about a condition that touches many lives. This program is presented in conjunction with Take Me To Your Moon: Journeys into the World of Dementia, an exhibition by Yoko “Tenyoh” Sugawara on view in the Ruth Brennan Gallery and sponsored by Jackalope. Inspired by the idea of dementia as a journey from Earth to the moon, from the familiar to the unknown, the artwork reflects the emotional and psychological terrain of memory loss, with the moon’s textured surface echoing how Alzheimer’s can affect the brain.

Part of Deadwood’s 150th Anniversary Celebration, award-winning author Chris Enss appears in full period attire to spotlight fearless women of the American West through a four-day series of talks, performances, and book signings in Deadwood. A program at the Deadwood Library shares stories of pioneering women physicians and teachers who challenged convention and strengthened frontier communities. At the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center, Enss explores her book The Widowed Ones: Beyond the Battle of the Little Bighorn, tracing the lives of the seven wives of U.S. Army officers who died in the battle and the perseverance that saw them through grief and financial strain. The schedule also honors local history as Enss appears as Dora DuFran to mark the 1980 Save Our Tail parade, the spontaneous march that followed the closure of Deadwood’s brothels, with a procession on Main Street. Filmmaker Justin Koehler then presents Nita: Hotbed in Deadwood in the Eagle Bar beneath The Brothel Deadwood, followed by a discussion. The series concludes at The Brothel Deadwood with book signings featuring Wicked Women, An Open Secret: The Story of Deadwood’s Most Notorious Bordellos, and other titles. Enss offers talks on Wicked Women and An Open Secret and deals Faro for book prizes. Brothel tours are available for $12 per person.

Keith Hampton Album Release Concert

Keith Hampton marks the arrival of Only Echoes with an intimate concert at the Homestake Opera House. Held in the former second floor library, the performance presents the new album from beginning to end, along with selections from across his career. A meet and greet follows the show with hors d'oeuvres. Originally from Wisconsin and now based in Austin, he honed his voice in Boston’s folk community, appearing at Club Passim, Johnny D’s, and The Center for Arts in Natick, and opening for Cosy Sheridan and Deb Pasternak. He founded Brave Records to release his own work, including HOPEfire (2002), Chance & Change (2006), and Tyranena (2010), and he produced and performed on the compilation Coming Home: Boston Song Collective (2004). The label has also issued recordings by a wide range of songwriters, classical performers, and world music artists. His catalog includes Journeyman (2014), inspired by Joni Mitchell’s introspective road trip songs, FOLLOWING (2018) with new interpretations of 1980s pop hits, and Beyond (2022), a personal set about connection with family, friends, and self. Only Echoes moves in a new direction, exploring grief, healing, and growth.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Enchanted Version of Cinderella takes the stage, produced under arrangement with Concord Theatricals. With Richard Rodgers’ melodies and Oscar Hammerstein II’s book and lyrics, the production features favorite songs such as In My Own Little Corner and Impossible. The story begins when a royal ball is proclaimed to help Prince Christopher choose a bride. Cinderella stays behind to ready her stepmother and two stepsisters, but her Fairy Godmother appears and sends her to the palace in magical style. As midnight approaches she departs in a rush, leaving a slipper that launches the Prince’s search, though he nearly fails to recognize her when she reappears in cinders. This staging hints at a fresh take on how the story resolves. Performances take place at the Sturgis Community Center Theater. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students, payable with cash or check at the door.

More Than Gold

Created by Lead residents Terrence Smith and Todd Jones to honor Lead’s 150th anniversary, More Than Gold is a music-filled stage work that traces the community’s story from early prospecting to the era of underground research. Woven across generations, its scenes follow the rise of the Homestake Mining Company, the daily realities of workers and families, and the making of a town known for perseverance. The narrative touches on labor battles, the push for suffrage, the impacts of war and epidemic, and the shutdown of the mine, returning to a central question about identity when the industry that once defined a place is no longer there. An ensemble takes on multiple roles while live music created in Lead over the past 150 years supports lyrical storytelling. As mining yields to scientific discovery beneath the surface, the production looks ahead, focusing on what a community builds above ground and what continues to endure through change.
