Layers of Life: Artwork by Debi West

Local artist and longtime art educator Debi West presents Layers of Life at the Art League Gallery, an exhibition that spans more than four decades of creative practice. Drawing from her personal archive, she revisits earlier canvases, photographs, and other surfaces, renewing them so that each piece retains echoes of its past while revealing fresh interpretations. The presentation highlights curiosity and reflection, encouraging viewers to experience the work as an ongoing conversation in which meaning accumulates and changes over time. West’s career blends studio work with a deep commitment to teaching. She taught for 25 years in Gwinnett County, Georgia, including a decade as Fine Arts Department Chair at North Gwinnett High School, before moving into educational consulting and graduate instruction, where she continues to mentor educators through writing and teaching. Her work has been shown across the country, and her contributions have been recognized with honors including National Elementary Art Educator, National Southeastern Secondary Art Educator, and Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association. She has authored more than 200 articles and several books. Reflecting her belief in the power of participation, the exhibition features a collaborative element that invites visitors to add images, marks, and ideas to a piece that will evolve over the course of the show. Admission to the exhibition, the reception, and the artist demonstration is free and open to all.

Layers of Life: Artwork by Debi West

At Art League Gallery, local artist and veteran educator Debi West presents Layers of Life, a showcase drawn from over four decades of creative work. West returns to pieces from her own archive, reworking earlier canvases, photographs, and other surfaces into newly realized artworks. The exhibition centers on curiosity and reflection, inviting viewers to experience each piece as part of a living process in which meaning gathers and shifts over time. Framed as a dialogue between past, present, and what is still emerging in her practice, West revisits earlier efforts to recycle, rework, and reimagine them so that new layers carry visible traces of what came before. West’s career blends studio practice with education. She taught for 25 years in Gwinnett County, Georgia, including a decade as Fine Arts Department Chair at North Gwinnett High School, before moving into educational consulting and graduate instruction, where she continues to mentor fellow educators through her writing and teaching. Nationally recognized as an artist and retired art educator, she has exhibited across the country, earned distinctions such as National Elementary Art Educator, National Southeastern Secondary Art Educator, and Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association, and authored more than 200 articles along with several books. Layers of Life also features a participatory component that welcomes audience contributions of images, marks, and ideas, collectively shaping a piece that will evolve throughout the run. An opening reception and an artist demonstration are planned, and all exhibition activities are free and open to the public.

May Artist in Residence - Tiffanie Barriere

Renowned mixologist Tiffanie Barriere, known as The Drinking Coach, appears as the artist in residence with a series of interactive experiences across Palmetto Bluff. The opening reception at FLOW Gallery + Workshop features light tastings and a conversation about her path from a passion for spirits to national recognition as a cocktail educator and historian, including features on Netflix’s High on the Hog and Drink Masters as well as Amazon Prime’s Three Drinkers, plus recognition from Tastemakers of the South and the James Beard Foundation. A seminar at Moreland Forest Home explores how signature spirits shape two celebrations, connecting the mint julep of the Kentucky Derby with the tequila and mezcal traditions of Cinco de Mayo. Participants examine the cultural roots of these flavors and learn how she blends the traditions into mezcal juleps, tequila sours, and more. At The Farm at Palmetto Bluff, a hands-on garden-to-glass workshop has participants harvesting fresh herbs and regional ingredients to build layered cocktails that reflect Lowcountry character. Instruction centers on botanicals, seasonality, and simple methods that yield bespoke results, making it a helpful primer for anyone tending a spring garden. The series concludes at Hush, the speakeasy at Montage Palmetto Bluff, with a session on the histories that shaped classic drinks. Barriere traces Black, Latin, and Southern influences on spirits and techniques, then encourages guests to translate those stories into personal expressions in the glass.

Olive Oil Masterclass

Guided by Suzanne, a certified olive oil sommelier, this masterclass explores extra virgin olive oil from delicate to robust. Learn how to judge quality through aroma and balance, and recognize the telltale peppery kick that signals a lively finish. Through a focused sensory session, you will train your nose to pick out fresh, green scents that indicate excellence and to spot flaws that reveal poor quality. The experience also highlights olive oil’s long history, its place in the Mediterranean way of life, and the natural compounds that shape flavor and contribute to well known benefits. The fee is $30 per person and reservations are required. Private classes are available for groups.

Whispers from the Soul | Artwork by Theresa King

Art League Gallery showcases Whispers from the Soul, an intimate exhibition of expressive paintings by self-taught artist Theresa King. Guided by a lifelong bond with nature, King centers themes of healing, spirituality, and the natural world, offering a tranquil space for contemplation. Cloud forms and a sense of movement recur throughout her work, recalling early moments of peace found while watching the sky. King began creating art in the 1980s through experimentation, explored various media, and ultimately embraced oils as her preferred approach. Her process is intuitive and spiritually guided, often sparked by dreams. Profound life experiences, including a cancer journey and years of caring for family members, deepened her understanding of healing energy and informed a personal practice of acknowledging hard emotions while consciously returning attention to sources of joy. This perspective shapes the exhibition’s intention, presenting color and imagery as conduits for restorative energy and inviting a feeling of calm and resonance. King’s distinctive style, rooted in spirituality, healing, and the natural world, has earned recognition among collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide. The exhibition includes an opening reception, artist demonstrations, and a talk on how color affects people emotionally, and all related programs are free and open to the public.
