Live in the Lobby Jazz with Lew Tabackin
Presented by the Koger Center and the ColaJazz Foundation, this concert is part of the new 2026 Live in the Lobby Jazz season, a partnership of the Koger Center for the Arts and the ColaJazz Foundation that brings six performances to spaces throughout the Koger Center. The series offers top tier jazz and distinctive programs in a memorable environment. This installment features Lew Tabackin, a flutist and tenor saxophonist known for a powerful artistic vision. His flute playing pairs formidable technique with deep expressiveness and cross cultural color. On tenor saxophone, he explores wide intervals, sudden shifts in mood and tempo, and an intensity that highlights the instrument’s melodic, rhythmic, and dynamic range. Rather than echoing past jazz icons, he has shaped influences into a sound that is uniquely his own. Tabackin began in Philadelphia, first studying flute and later tenor saxophone in high school. He earned a Bachelor of Music in flute from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music in 1962 and studied privately with composer Vincent Persichetti. Following U.S. Army service from 1962 to 1965, he moved to New Jersey and then New York, performing with Tal Farlow and Don Friedman and later working in big bands led by Cab Calloway, Les and Larry Elgart, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, Chuck Israels, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Clark Terry, and Duke Pearson. In the late 1960s he led a trio at La Boheme in Philadelphia and played in smaller groups with Donald Byrd, Roland Hanna, Elvin Jones, and Attila Zoller. His credits also include work with Doc Severinsen and the studio band for Dick Cavett’s television show, as well as European solo appearances with the Danish Radio Orchestra and the Hamburg Jazz Workshop.

Third Thursday Art Night: Patrick Parise
The Koger Center for the Arts, part of the Vista Guild, has teamed with The Jasper Project to launch The Nook, a rotating exhibition space created as part of the Third Thursday Art Night celebration. This showcase features work by Patrick Parise, and a complimentary opening reception welcomes visitors to explore the exhibition. Parise was born in Brooklyn and has made Columbia, South Carolina his creative home for more than fifty years. Encouraged early by his mother, a painter and art historian, he studied painting at Bethany College and printmaking with Boyd Saunders at the University of South Carolina. He founded his own etching studio and later broadened his practice to include painting, sculpture, mixed media, and custom design. His career includes solo exhibitions at Vista Studios, City Art Gallery, and Stormwater Studios, along with international recognition through the Saatchi Gallery’s Your Studio Competition. His work has been commissioned for private and public projects across South Carolina, including gifts presented to international dignitaries and large-scale installations.
