The Revolution and Mennonites: A Crisis of Conscience

Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories of the Revolution Lecture Series features Ken Sensenig with a look at how Mennonite pacifists struggled with matters of conscience amid the upheaval of 1777. The talk focuses on John and Anna Baer at the peaceful Ephrata Cloister, which received wounded soldiers for care as Philadelphia was being defended. The Baers wrestled with how to tend the injured even as the conflict challenged their deepest beliefs. Their family’s experience includes community tensions and their son’s involvement in horse trading with the British, while they continued to show compassion despite suspicion. They later died of typhus contracted while nursing, and their graves were forgotten for more than a century until a local farmer made a chance discovery in 1980. The program takes place in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Admission applies to the lecture only and excludes the Snyder Gallery and Hand Mansion. Admission is $5 for Rock Ford Members and $10 for Non-Members. Presenter Ken Sensenig has spent a career in education, including extensive work with Mennonite Central Committee. His perspective reflects years in Africa and teaching in area schools. He is strongly engaged with local history, sharing it in nearby retirement communities, and he devotes part of his early retirement to storytelling and projects on a farm near Akron, Pennsylvania.

Featherburn and more

Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse hosts a night of adventurous sounds featuring Featherburn alongside songwriter and storyteller Leo DiSanto with his Leo Trio. Featherburn delivers a theatrical, high-energy mix that blends folk, punk, and Eastern European textures with gritty grooves, rich harmonies, and a playful spark that invites wonder. Leo brings an explorer’s spirit and road-seasoned tales, shaped by street performances and journeys that have stretched from camps in Transylvania and monasteries in the Himalayas to the boulevards of New Orleans and the interior of Alaska. Known for imaginative songs, a powerful voice, exciting live shows, and captivating storytelling, he is the founding front man of the award-winning string band Vinegar Creek Constituency. In recent years he has roamed from the Gulf of Maine to the Gulf of Mexico to Galway Bay in Ireland, often accompanied by his exuberant brown dog, Ringo, sharing songs wherever he can. His third solo album, To Fly So Low, released in mid February 2025, reached the top 25 on the Folk Alliance International Folk radio chart and appeared on No Depression’s Best of the Month playlist. Figure Workshop

Led by PCAD professor Jason Ward, this figure workshop welcomes both beginners and experienced artists and concentrates on capturing gesture and understanding human body proportions. Instruction explores key skeletal landmarks, the body’s range of motion, how to apply perspective in figure drawing, and the role of a clear silhouette in bringing figures to life. The class begins with an introduction followed by a brief demonstration, then most of the time is devoted to working from a model using a simple single-figure setup. Drawing and painting are both supported, and participants should have materials ready at the start. The cost is $100 per person. For painters in oil or acrylic, bring core colors such as titanium white, burnt sienna, burnt umber, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, and ultramarine blue, plus any additional colors you prefer. A range of brushes with both stiff and soft bristles is recommended, along with a medium or small metal diamond-shaped palette knife. Use a proper wood or glass palette, or palette paper, and paint on a primed canvas or hardboard panel, or heavyweight paper. Include lint free rags or paper towels. Optional supplies for oils include turpentine, odorless turpiniod, or mineral spirits for cleaning, and acrylic painters should have a jar for water. For drawing, bring pencils and graphite sticks covering H through B grades or a standard #2, along with soft vine charcoal, compressed sticks, charcoal pencils, and charcoal powder. Useful erasers include kneaded and rectangular white types, as well as pink pencil-cap erasers. A sandpaper block or stump helps with toning and sharpening. Choose a sturdy surface such as heavyweight hot press paper like Bristol Vellum for graphite, and heavyweight charcoal or watercolor paper for charcoal, with Rives BFK cited as a preferred option. Paper towels and artist brushes are helpful for blending.

What Were They Wearing?

Historic Rock Ford’s Fashion Lecture Series features Robert S. DuPlessis with an exploration of what people in Lancaster and nearby communities wore during the Revolutionary era. Starting from Lancaster’s settlement in the 1720s and its rise by 1760 as the largest inland town in British North America, the talk examines how trade in furs and skins supplied by Native Americans, along with agricultural and metal goods produced by settlers, shaped daily material life in the borough and its rural surroundings. It considers how residents engaged with the consumer revolution that spread through northwestern Europe and the North American colonies, whether the shifts in material culture seen in Philadelphia, with which Lancaster had close economic ties, influenced this region, or if a distinctly inland or frontier character took hold. The program takes place in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn, with parking available behind the Barn. Before the lecture, visitors may explore the Snyder Gallery and the 2026 Focus Exhibit. Admission is $10, with a $5 rate for Rock Ford members.

Corinna Joy • Glasshouse Wineworks

Corinna Joy brings her heartfelt, piano-centered songwriting to Glasshouse Wineworks, weaving frank, diary-like stories with a voice praised by PA Musician Magazine for its soulful warmth and dynamic power. A Pennsylvania native raised in Hershey and based in Lancaster, she draws on years at the piano, experience in musical theater, and early admiration for artists like Billy Joel and Carole King. Her accolades include five nominations at the Central Pennsylvania Music Awards, with recognition for Best Songwriter and Best Female Artist, and Song of the Year at the inaugural ceremony for her track Time is Up. Her songs trace young love, the winding path of self-discovery, and the layered realities of motherhood and marriage, delivered with an emotive touch reminiscent of Adele. Coverage from PA Musician Magazine, WITF Music, ABC27’s Good Day PA, LNP + Lancaster Online, and PennLive Soundcheck highlights her growing reach. Performances have ranged from intimate piano bars to major festivals such as MusikFest and LAUNCH, along with support appearances for Jeffrey Gaines and Rhett Miller of Old 97’s. Painted Barn Quilts - June 6

Create a painted barn quilt at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen with instructors Janet Yunghans and Krista Risley. All supplies are provided, including four foam brushes, painter’s tape, and a selection of four to five paint colors based on the design you choose. Participants pick from five curated patterns, with options that include Sunflower and Double Cardinal. Learn taping and painting techniques to produce sharp geometric motifs inspired by traditional barn quilts. Camp MFE! Week 1

Camp MFE is an annual summer program centered on music for students in grades 4 through 12. Offered in collaboration with Trinity Lutheran Church, it provides two weeks of instrumental learning in a lively, hands-on, and creative setting where students collaborate with peers. Participants discover rhythm, sound, and vibration alongside guest artists and musicians of international renown. Music for Everyone covers all expenses so students can attend at no cost, broadening access to meaningful musical opportunities. Enrollment is open to those who have completed third grade and have basic familiarity with their instrument, such as how to hold it and produce a tone.
