The Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library are hosting the spring used book sale on the library’s ground floor, and this day features $5 a bag pricing. Browse an extensive mix of adult and children’s fiction, bestsellers and classics, plus nonfiction covering travel, art, history, home repair, genealogy, health, science, crafts, language, and true crime. The selection also includes puzzles, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, patterns, games, and more. There are no Sunday hours for this sale. All proceeds support the library.

Tyrone/BG @ Altoona MS

This track and field event features competition for middle school athletes. There are no limits to the number of entries per event. Girls running events will precede boys, with the fastest heat running last. Accurate times should be entered to ensure the fastest athletes run against each other. Field events include the Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, and Discus. Athletes leaving a competition to compete in another event will have a ten-minute allowance.

Tuesday Night Pokemon League at Gatehouse Games

This weekly Pokemon League event at Gatehouse Games gives participants the chance to challenge powerful trainers and earn exclusive promotional cards.

Tuesday Star Wars X-Wing at Gatehouse Games

Open tabletop gaming is available with support for both the 2.0 and 2.5 rulesets. Epic format is also permitted, so players can choose the style that fits their game.

Trivia Night

Trivia takes center stage at Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society in a friendly team competition hosted by Jim Price, known as “The Professor.” There is no cost to participate, and both members and guests are welcome. Teams tackle questions across a wide range of subjects, with fresh themes and new questions introduced each week. The festivities line up with Taco Tuesday for an extra treat. Prizes go to the three teams with the highest scores.

Penn State Laureate Pearl Gluck

Pearl Gluck, the 2025–26 Penn State Laureate, visits Penn State Altoona for a program in the Wolf Kuhn Theatre at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. She will show and discuss a selection of her short documentary films, followed by a question and answer session led by Penn State Altoona professor emeritus Jerry Zolten. Pizza will be available. Gluck is an associate professor in Penn State’s Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, where her teaching centers on screenwriting, directing, and producing. Her films engage with themes of gender, class, faith, and autobiographical storytelling. Her recognitions include three Fulbright grants, a Sundance Producer’s Lab fellowship, and support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her feature The Turn Out received multiple honors, including Best Debut Feature at the Female Eye Film Festival, and her work has appeared at festivals such as Cannes and Sundance as well as with NPR and PBS. She is a co-founder of the Centre Film Festival, recognized in 2024 as Best Festival/Event of the Year by the Happy Valley Tourism Board. As Laureate, she is traveling to Commonwealth Campuses with workshops and screenings that encourage regional storytelling, build student connections, and open opportunities for future collaborations and residencies. The Penn State Laureate appointment is a full-year role that shines a light on the arts and humanities, the honoree’s work, and the University’s mission. This event is free and open to the public.

Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World Through Art

Presented in conjunction with an exhibition of works by Jewish artists from the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art’s permanent collection, this creative session welcomes children ages 6 to 9 to explore the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world, through hands-on artmaking. Young artists will use repurposed materials to make original pieces and design stones bearing messages of kindness, reflecting themes of compassion, justice, and care for the planet. An adult caregiver is required to remain with each child, and parents are invited to spend time with the exhibition while the session is underway. A suggested contribution of $5 helps sustain this and future SAMA programs. Support for this program is provided by the Greater Altoona Jewish Federation and the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Trivia Night

Put your knowledge to the test at Buccinese Society’s team trivia night, hosted by “The Professor,” Jim Price. There is no cost to play, and people who are not members are welcome. Team up with friends and face a broad mix of categories, with fresh themes and questions each week. Prizes are awarded to the three teams with the highest scores. The kitchen offers weekly specials along with desserts, sandwiches, salads, wings, and more. The venue is entirely smoke free.

Youth Career & Resource Fair

An inaugural youth career and resource fair welcomes local teens, parents, and employers who hire youth. The fair features interactive booths with businesses hiring ages 14 and up, community organizations, activities, information about CareerLink's youth services, and refreshments. It takes place during school hours. If a student is not attending with their class, parents are encouraged to attend to gather information. Employers interested in participating can register using the event's QR code. Job seekers and parents do not need to register.

Story Hour

Story Hour at Portage Public Library is a free program facilitated by library volunteer Kathy Hough. It is designed to help children cultivate a lifelong love of books, reading, and learning.

Brooder Set Up

Fluffy friends have arrived and need help settling into their new home. This event is for children ages 3-12.

Toddler Time

Enjoy a special story time that incorporates music and movement. This activity is designed for children ages 2 and 3 accompanied by a caregiver.

Gallery Reception

A gallery reception at Penn State Altoona highlights the work of Visual Art Studies students Makenzie Kunkle and Talon McKendree in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Explore Makenzie Kunkle’s Unmuting the Noise in the Sheetz Gallery and Talon McKendree’s The Warning in the McLanahan Gallery. The reception and exhibitions are free and open to the public. Spring Fling at Crowned Boutique offers a shopping experience with new inventory and several pop up vendors. Penelope & Co. will provide permanent jewelry along with handmade and custom earrings. Elevate curated thrift shop will bring a range of hand picked items. Creations by Kelsey will feature handmade gifts and accessories. Fresh lemonade will be sold by young entrepreneurs. 9 to 5 The Musical

Altoona Community Theatre presents the stage version of 9 to 5 at The Mishler Theatre, featuring music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and a book by Patricia Resnick. Inspired by the 20th Century Fox film and originally produced on Broadway by Robert Greenblatt, this production is directed by Alice Lyn Oswald. The story follows Violet, Judy, and Doralee as they band together against their overbearing, sexist boss. When circumstances shift in surprising ways, they picture a workplace without him and set out to remake the office on their own terms, finding empowerment through teamwork and quick wit.

Coffee University: Mixology at Standing Stone Coffee Company

Participate in a new tasting lab. Attendees will review the taste system and learn about flavor combinations. Youll experiment with single-origin coffees to see how they create unique experiences. Finally, you will explore the foundations of mixology and experiment with combining other flavors and taste components with coffee. There are limited seats available, so please call ahead or sign up at the counter.

814 Creators Festival

Stephanie & the Wild Hearts bring a high-energy performance to the 814 Creators Festival in downtown Altoona, blending crowd-favorite covers with their own originals. Wildfire hosts its annual free community book swap, a rain or shine gathering that invites community members to trade books they have finished for something fresh. Bring one or more used books and choose as many new-to-you titles as you would like, within reason. All genres are welcome and all are invited to participate. Please avoid bringing books with mold. Those who only wish to donate without taking any books are asked to drop off contributions in advance during shop hours. The exchange takes place at the Wildfire storefront.

Penn State Altoona University Jazz Band

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Community Clean Up Day

Neighbors Helping Neighbors brings the community together for hands-on clean-up projects that refresh public spaces and strengthen connections among neighbors. Small teams gather at rotating sites across Altoona to pick up litter, care for neighborhood areas, and support residents in practical ways. Celebrate the next chapter of Disney Lorcana as the story moves from Winterspell into Wilds Unknown, continuing the search for the vine’s source after Elsa’s icy intervention. This pre-release features a sealed one-on-one format with 30 minutes for deck building followed by three rounds of play. Entry is $40 and includes a pre-release kit with six booster packs and one randomly selected promo card from a pool of six. Pixar favorites join the game with fresh cards, bringing characters from Toy Story and The Incredibles into the mix. This event features dressage tests and a Foxfire Memorial Trophy. Dress will be casual, but suitable boots and an ASTM certified helmet are required for every rider while mounted anywhere on show grounds. Dressage or Western attire is encouraged but not required. Paddock boots and half chaps are allowed. Full chaps are not acceptable in English Dressage classes. Dogs must be leashed at all times. Stalls will not be available. Trailer parking is in designated areas only. Awards will be given based on the Danish System, with 1st-6th place based on score.

Offered by the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in connection with the exhibition Our History is Your History, Works by Jewish Artists in the SAMA Permanent Collection, this hands-on workshop invites children ages 6 to 9 to explore the imagery of Jewish tradition. Participants will learn about symbols such as the menorah, the Star of David, and the hamsa, and create artwork inspired by the pomegranate. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and parents are welcome to view the exhibition while the session takes place. Registration is recommended so organizers can prepare for this free program. A suggested $5 donation supports this and future SAMA programs. This program is funded by The Greater Altoona Jewish Federation and the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Mercedes Moment Night at the Altoona Curve

Mercedes Moment is the Home Nursing Agency Foundation’s signature fundraiser, offering an annual chance to win big while enjoying a night at the ballpark with the Altoona Curve. Sample wings from local vendors and cast a vote to help crown the Wing King of Altoona, with flavors spanning Original or Buffalo, creative spicy, creative sweet and unique or exotic. Shoppers will find craft and non-food vendors on site as well. The music lineup features K4 KOUNTRY, 7TH VIRTUE and country artist Josh Gallagher from The Voice. Families will find plenty to do, including a petting zoo, axe throwing with Slingers Throw House, a dunk tank, a large bounce house, face painting, on-the-spot custom T-shirts and classic yard games. A selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, and lawn chairs are welcome. Admission is $5 per person for walk-ins. Pokémon Pitch Black Pre-Release Event - Gootzy Gaming, Altoona, PA

Darkness takes center stage as Pokémon Pitch Black makes its pre-release debut, featuring the first trading card appearance of Mega Darkrai Ex. This event at Gootzy Gaming welcomes players of every experience level, and while some knowledge of the Pokémon TCG can help, it is not required. Pricing is age based to keep it accessible for younger trainers. Entry is $25 for ages 12 and under and $35 for ages over 12. Each entry includes a pre-release Build and Battle kit along with prize support, and play is capped at three rounds. Capacity is limited to 20 participants, and spots are secured with payment at the time of in-store sign-up. Gootzy Gaming is an official Play! Pokémon location. The venue is completely peanut and tree nut free, so please avoid bringing items with those ingredients. Snacks and beverages are available on site.
