Guidance is also offered on working with spiral patterns to support awareness and personal growth. Researcher and author Lucia Hodges of Winchester, Oregon shares perspectives shaped by a formal background in biology and ecology and more than two decades in a theosophically based spiritual community. Her books include Rising Up Into the Divine, which connects mysticism, history, science, and inner evolution, and Spirals: Cosmic Bridges Between Dimensions, a synthesis of long inquiry into a practical and visionary guide. Desert Hollow

Desert Hollow brings a rich blend of California desert grit and West Virginia country soul to Talent Club, led by the duo of Xander Hitzig and Nicole Olney, whose musical partnership began in Los Angeles as castmates in a country jukebox musical. Now based in Maui, they shape heartfelt, boundary-blurring roots songs that favor sincerity over frills. Xander moves fluidly among fiddle, tenor banjo, and lead guitar, while Nicole’s guitar and five-string banjo lay a gentle, open rhythm. Her vivid songwriting and airy vocals weave through their arrangements, and his voice carries the clear, earthy weight of traditional bluegrass. When they sing together, their harmonies reflect the ease and depth of longtime partners. Sets can range from lively, full-band performances that spark dancing to intimate duets suited to quiet listening, with original material that feels both classic and current. Following their debut EP, Thirsty, years of touring have refined their sound, and they have announced their first full-length record, a milestone that highlights their continued growth.

"First Friday on First" with ERIN LINTON, an Artist reception....

ART on FIRST presents an artist reception featuring Erin Linton as the evening’s spotlighted creator. Erin will be available to talk about her newest pieces, and the celebration includes live music along with light bites and refreshments. Raised in the small Oregon community of Lincoln near Ashland, now within the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Erin spent her childhood roaming forested acres of pines and firs and caring for orphaned or injured birds. At eleven she rehabilitated an American Robin she named Navin and released it back to the wild, an experience that sparked a lifelong connection with wildlife. Regular birding trips with her father to the Klamath Bird Refuge helped her learn to identify well over a hundred species during spring and fall migrations, and birds became central to her creative life. Her work blends a love of wildlife, a passion for painting and an appreciation for tea. She paints with gouache on reclaimed teabags. Each piece begins with saving and carefully preparing the bags... drying to set the stains, removing the tea, rinsing, soaking to lower acidity, then a distilled water bath for pH testing before drying and flattening. The prepared teabags are layered onto canvas board that has been treated with an India ink wash and decorative papers to create a visually pleasing ground. She chooses teabags for their subtle tones and textures, which complement fur and feathers and bring a gentle warmth to the animals she portrays. Erin has received numerous awards, exhibits in shows across the country, and maintains a permanent presence at ART on FIRST in Ashland, Oregon.

Insights into the Biodiversity of Butterflies & Moths of the Siskiyous

At Geos Institute, explore insights into the butterflies and moths of the Siskiyous through a gathering that begins with a book signing and informal conversation, then continues with a presentation and open discussion. Registration is requested for both portions. Topics include how to interpret maps and learn from what they reveal, Lepidoptera as indicators of climate change, searches for rare species, the interdependence of plants and animals with a focus on caterpillar host plants, the effects of disturbance on ecological balance, and ways to contribute to regional knowledge of Lepidoptera in Southern Oregon. Copies of the new two-volume Butterflies of Oregon: An Updated Atlas Honoring John Hinchcliff will be available from Dr. Jeffrey C. Miller for $95, check only. Dr. Miller began studying entomology in 1971 and continued through graduate work, a postdoctoral appointment, and an instructor role at UC Davis before joining Oregon State University in 1979, where he served from Assistant Professor to Professor of Entomology and is now Professor Emeritus. His teaching spanned 16 courses across General Ecology, Biological Control, Taxonomy, Biodiversity, and Photoshop. His research covered insect management in agricultural and forest systems, insect biodiversity in Oregon woodlands and coniferous forests, and insect biosystematics with emphasis on Lepidoptera and their caterpillars. A dedicated photographer, he has produced six books, four published by the U.S. Forest Service and two by Harvard Press, featuring images centered on caterpillars. His studies on caterpillar foodplants began in 1986, informed by work on non-target effects of Btk and by John Hinchliff’s 1994 An Atlas of Oregon Butterflies, and have included collaborations with Dr. Paul C. Hammond, Dana N.R. Ross, and Dennis A. Albert. Dana N.R. Ross is a freelance entomologist and courtesy faculty member in the Department of Integrative Biology at Oregon State University. A fascination with butterflies from early childhood grew into decades of field documentation across Oregon and neighboring states. After earning an M.S. under Dr. Miller, he completed federal, state, and private contracts to survey and monitor rare butterflies and to conduct species inventories at key ecological sites, documenting butterflies from less visited and understudied locations. He co-leads annual butterfly counts at Oregon Caves National Monument and teaches at the Siskiyou Field Institute. His contributions to Lepidoptera research include publications and the distinction of having both an Ecuadorean moth and a Pacific Northwest butterfly named in his honor, and he was credited as “Moth and Butterfly Wrangler” in the film The Dark Divide.

Introduction to Ikebana: Japanese Flower Arranging

Explore the Japanese art of flower arranging in a workshop that pairs creative practice with a warm remembrance of Shozo Sato Sensei. Ikebana is a classical art of refinement that goes far beyond placing blooms in a vase. It is a mindful discipline that brings flowers, branches, leaves, and stems to life as a medium for expression, revealing the character of each element and seeking harmony, balance, and the thoughtful use of space, with ideas such as wabi sabi and ma at its core. This gathering honors Shozo Sato Sensei, whose guidance deeply shaped Siskiyou Aikikai and SCAI, and who was accomplished in the Way of Tea, calligraphy, sumi-e, and ikebana, as well as an author on these traditions. Following Japanese custom, the workshop observes the anniversary of his passing through practice. Darrell Bluhm will guide the session and encourage exploration of the essential principles of this path of self refinement. Materials will be available, and participants are welcome to bring favorite flowers, vases, frogs, pruners, and any other tools or materials. Dojo members, family, and friends are welcome. A minimum donation of $30 is requested. Space is limited, so please RSVP.

Rise Up and Rock: A Front Woman’s Journey

Author Natasha Neece presents Rise Up and Rock: A Front Woman’s Journey, a visually rich memoir that blends music, mysticism, and the realities of female leadership on a rock stage. Drawing from her time fronting a Led Zeppelin tribute outfit with an otherwise all-male lineup, she recounts exhilarating performances and volatile offstage dynamics while reframing myth and archetype through a feminine take on the Hero’s Journey. The story follows a path through conflict, slander, and ego clashes toward clarity, purpose, and renewed self-worth. Along the way, Neece reflects on childhood imprints and a longing to belong, explores collaboration as a heart-led practice, and holds to the belief that music can heal. Her search for guidance weaves in spiritual traditions and practices around the world, from temples and retreats to revivals and ancestral encounters, all while carrying the demands of fronting a band through seventy-five shows. The book is available in e-book, black-and-white paperback, and full-color hardcover formats, offering an intimate look at rock culture and a candid account of reclaiming authenticity and empowerment.

Miss Marple: Murder at the Vicarage

A flippant remark at the vicarage dinner table about Colonel Protheroe becomes chillingly relevant when, hours later, he is found shot in the clergyman’s study. In this stage telling, Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple makes her first appearance, using quiet observation to sift through a village where nearly everyone seems to have a motive. Secrets and suspicions intertwine as she pieces together the clues to reveal who turned idle words into murder.

Highlights include a Scenic Drive home that, through a series of surprises, connected Finkle to his grandmother’s namesake, and a house known for having 11 lives that was built on East Main Street but is no longer there. This event was rescheduled due to a snowstorm. Finkle has lived in Ashland since 1991 and is known for walking tours, photo-filled presentations, and a long-running blog about the city. Portraits Without Limits with Cheryl Magellen

At Central Art (MEDFORD), Cheryl Magellen leads a continuing monthly portrait course presented in repeating four session blocks, capped at eight students. The format provides ample working time and attentive guidance, offering a clear, step by step pathway for drawing and painting portraits. Each cycle builds skills for returning artists while still welcoming new participants. Study centers on constructing the head as a solid three dimensional form, organizing light and shadow for convincing value, introducing color without sacrificing form or clarity, integrating features naturally within the head, and shaping expression through careful use of edges, emphasis, and restraint. The focus is on learning to see and make decisions rather than copying features or hurrying to a finish. Instruction is structured yet flexible, open to beginners through experienced artists, and all media are welcome. Registration is required. Artists enrolled in Creative Mastery may take this as a complementary study, though it is not a prerequisite. Early registration includes a digital working edition of the instructor’s upcoming portrait instruction ebook that expands on the concepts and exercises explored in class.

What Remains: Photography of the Upper Rogue River by Laura K. Brubaker

Laura K. Brubaker presents a body of contemporary photographs shaped by the Upper Rogue River watershed, a place where volcanic ground meets age-old mountain ranges to form a diverse, adaptable ecology. The series follows ongoing journeys through mountains, streams, and forests, moving between periods of strain and renewal. Native plants and wildlife, together with traces of human presence, persist within limits and transformation. Layered compositions let patterns appear and then fade into abstractions drawn from the land itself. Guided by light, water, and vegetation, these images encourage an unhurried gaze, lingering on often overlooked moments and considering what endures as conditions evolve over time.

Families are asked to bring athletes to registration for sizing so gear fits correctly. League fees are $300 and are due at registration. Cash, check, and card are accepted, and card payments include a $5 processing fee. A $100 equipment deposit is collected at gear pick up and is refunded at the end of the season when all equipment is returned. Teams practice a minimum of three weeknights set by the coach, with games on Sundays, and some travel within Southern Oregon is part of the schedule. For questions or more details, email medfordyouthfootball1@gmail.com. Business sponsorship opportunities are available through the organization. MYF is a nonprofit organization and is not associated with a school district.

Willow and Qi: movement in the meadow

At Vesper Meadow Restoration Preserve, the plan includes a guided Qigong movement session with Michael Vasquez, a picnic-style break in the meadow, and hands-on willow planting along Latgawa Creek. Willow cuttings readily take root, forming new shrubs that nourish beavers and provide valuable bird habitat. Qigong is an ancient practice that supports mental and physical flexibility, improves balance, nurtures awareness of body, mind, and spirit, and can bolster the immune system. A 60 minute movement practice will be offered. Michael has taught Tai Chi and Qigong for more than forty years and is the author of The Bamboo Path, which explores personal growth, releasing past resistances, and harmonizing heart and mind. All are welcome, with a recommendation for ages 12 and up. Expect gentle movement and walking over mostly level but uneven terrain, along with planting work in the creek corridor. Bring a bag lunch, water, layered clothing, and waders or waterproof boots, with a limited supply available to borrow. Snacks are provided. This is a free event, and donations are accepted.

2026 Airgun Oregon Extreme Airgun Challenge

A multi-discipline airgun competition at Ashland Gun and Archery Club brings together Extreme Field Target, 100-yard benchrest, and a long range challenge for a full showcase of precision shooting. The Extreme Field Target course features 15 lanes with two targets on each, squads of three, and clearly posted distances ranging from 15 to 110 yards. Power is capped at 120 fpe, calibers are .30 or smaller, pellets only with no slugs, and scopes may be used at up to 32X. Targets are round red swingers with white backers to make impacts easy to read, any visible movement counts as a hit, and non-shooting squad members handle scoring and spotting. Spinners range from 7/8 inch to 4 inches, and one lane requires supported standing offhand. The benchrest program includes a 100-yard pellet class with updated two card finals, along with an Unlimited 120 fpe slug class. Both pellets and slugs are limited to 120 fpe and .35 caliber for safety and scoring. Shooting is conducted on 25 bull cards. Tethering is permitted in the Unlimited Slug class, with air tanks secured on the bench for the duration, and a quiet, controlled line is maintained under RSO supervision. The long range challenge sets single targets at 145, 175, 195, 250, and 300 yards across five benches. LED hit indicators on each target streamline scoring, with the center bull spinner lighting red for 10 points and the outer swinger lighting green for 5 points. That yields up to 50 points per lane and a maximum of 250 for the match. Each position has a clear view of all distances, competitors rotate through targets as directed by the RSO, five shots are taken on each target, and tethering is allowed with tanks kept securely on the bench. Sign-in takes place in the clubhouse to the left of the shotgun shooting line on the drive out to the airgun range, and registration is required before using the range. Match entry is $300 and includes a shirt and the awards dinner or lunch. Daily brunch or lunch is available for an additional charge or donation. AirGuns of Arizona leads sponsorship of the Extreme Field Target match with $2,000 in total cash prizes. Altaros Slugs and Athlon are also supporting sponsors, with additional prizes to be announced.

Molly Tinsley talks about her new novel ” A Modest Trumpet Fanfare”

Molly Best Tinsley presents her new novel, A Modest Trumpet Fanfare, which follows the Diamond family as they pursue an ideal of military precision at home and the hidden costs that come with it. Ted and Marina Diamond raise their twins, Lauren and Theo, aiming for a household that is orderly, close, and socially adept. Constant moves, strict expectations, and the presence of violence begin to strain their connection, and secrets take hold. Each person’s perspective adds a different thread to the narrative, until the curiosity of a grandchild sets change in motion. Tinsley brings deep experience to the conversation. Raised in a military environment, she later served on the civilian faculty at the U.S. Naval Academy, teaching literature and creative writing. After publishing her debut, My Life with Darwin, she relocated to Ashland to write full time. Her story collection, Throwing Knives, earned the Sandstone Prize and the Oregon Book Award. She went on to write two spy thrillers and a literary mystery, work that led her toward the book she had long been preparing to write.

Song of Belonging with author Michelle St. Romain Wilson

Song of Belonging takes center stage with author Michelle St. Romain Wilson. This multigenerational story, touched by magical realism, follows a woman’s search for belonging as she uncovers her family’s legacy. The narrative moves between 1934 Richarme, Louisiana, where the loss of a child fractures a family and town and Grace Paschal writes to her late daughter while recalling gifts once suppressed, and 2019 Berkeley, where Grace’s great-granddaughter Alice opens a long-kept jewelry box and begins to experience memories that are not her own. As professional demands press in, those visions pull her toward the truth about her lineage and the women healers who safeguard the waters near their Louisiana home. Readers who appreciate the work of Kate Morton, Amy Harmon, or Sally Page may be drawn to this novel. The author began writing early in life, coauthored the poetry books Promised Fruit and Water’s Edge, earned a BA in English from Loyola University New Orleans and an MA in creative writing from California State University, Sacramento, grew up in Louisiana with time in California and Hawaii, leads writing workshops, reads widely, and lives in Medford, Oregon with family, two spaniels, and an older cat.

The Two Tracks

From Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountain foothills, The Two Tracks have spent years shaping a roots-driven sound centered on vivid storytelling and rich four-voice harmonies. Led by spouses Dave and Julie Huebner on guitars, with Dave also bringing expressive cello lines, the quartet is completed by bassist Taylor Phillips and drummer Fernando Serna, creating performances that feel intimate yet full of momentum. Dave’s classical cello background blends with bold bluegrass runs and catchy rock sensibilities, giving their arrangements a distinctive color. Their fifth studio album, Seasons Unknown, recorded in Nashville with a trusted team that includes Grammy-recognized producer Will Kimbrough alongside engineer Sean Sullivan and mixer Trina Shoemaker, spans a wide palette. Songs range from the road-ready spark of Mexico By Friday and the harmony-forward title track to the socially charged bluegrass of Building Walls and the stripped-down duet My Heart is Too Easy. Their catalog also includes The Two Tracks, Postcard Town, Cheers to Solitude, and It’s a Complicated Life. The band has toured across the United States and abroad, appearing at noted gatherings such as Americanafest and the Kate Wolf Music Festival, and sharing stages with artists ranging from Orville Peck to The Brothers Comatose and the Marshall Tucker Band. Coverage from outlets including Relix, American Songwriter, No Depression, Americana UK, and Glide has highlighted their strong harmonies, skilled musicianship, and a modern take on American roots. At the heart of every show is connection, with energetic performances that leave a lasting impression long after the final note.
