Life in America: 1940s

Explore everyday life in the 1940s through a series of hands-on experiences. Start at a general store station where visitors assemble ration books and use stamps to select basic goods while learning how families coped with wartime shortages. Discover what play looked like in that era with demonstrations of wooden toys and favorite tabletop games. Try your hand at a victory garden activity that explains how households raised their own nutrient-rich produce and shares tips for beginning a backyard plot. Step into the atmosphere of a servicemen’s canteen, a place for music, morale, and home-front hospitality, though rations are not being served. Meet historical reenactors in full period attire, examine their equipment, ask questions, and hear stories that highlight both bravery and daily routines. Additional interactive elements are planned. Admission is free, and no registration is required. For more information, inquire at the museum’s front desk.

The Dans--Spring & Main, Lima, OHIO

Steely Dan grew out of the partnership of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker at Bard College, rising to prominence in Los Angeles with studio-centered recordings that blended modern rock with a jazz sensibility and vivid, often dark storytelling. They favored recording over the usual touring life and worked with many leading musicians. The Dans, based in Lima, Ohio, gather artists from varied professional backgrounds to delve into this catalog with precision and spirit. Their focus is on preserving the fine points of the songs while sharing the narratives with conviction, highlighting tight grooves, layered vocal harmonies, close ensemble interplay, and introspective lead vocals that reflect the essence of these recordings.
