Gem City Pinball League - Season 17

Gem City Pinball League returns for Season 17 at Canal Street Arcade and Deli, meeting on Mondays with exceptions for most holidays or when the league is not in session. Any schedule changes will be communicated to members. The cost to participate is $20 per session, plus coin drop each week. Each week features groups of three or four players who compete on four randomly selected machines, earning points based on placement. Pairings rotate so members play with different competitors throughout the season. The regular season spans eight weeks, followed by two nights of finals. A cutoff based on overall standings determines placement into A division finals or B division finals, and every participant qualifies for one of these tournaments. Finals formats may adjust based on league needs and the number of players. Reliable attendance is expected. There are no make up weeks, though one drop is applied so each player’s lowest weekly score is removed at the end of the season. Missing three weeks results in removal from season rankings and disqualification from that season’s finals, with special circumstances considered at the discretion of league operators if communicated promptly. Players removed for attendance may still play during the season, but scores will not be recorded, and they may return at the start of the next season if space allows. Respectful conduct is required. Disrespectful behavior, arguing with officials, or disregarding rules can lead to disqualification or removal. Mechanical issues can occur in pinball, and rulings may involve shutting down or restarting a game. Final decisions rest with league directors, supporting a fair and welcoming experience for all.

Open Reiki Share

A Reiki share brings together practitioners and individuals who want to experience Reiki to exchange healing sessions in a calm, communal setting. Participants take turns offering and receiving, which strengthens the collective flow of energy, fosters trust, and cultivates compassion. The format also gives students meaningful, hands-on practice to develop their skills within a community devoted to mutual support, continuous learning, and holistic well-being. Many people find that receiving from several practitioners deepens relaxation and can enhance the overall effect. Newer practitioners gain confidence through real-life experience, while the shared circle encourages emotional support and spiritual growth. The process often invites clearer intuition, greater self-awareness, and noticeable relief from stress that can leave participants feeling renewed and centered. Attendance is open to certified masters and practitioners, students currently studying Reiki, and those curious about energy work. Some may attend simply to observe, depending on the event’s guidelines. Donations are welcomed but not required.

AKC Canine Good Citizen Course

Build polite manners and dependable obedience with the AKC Canine Good Citizen course, a four-week training series from the American Kennel Club. The program promotes responsible dog ownership and helps dogs show confidence through solid social skills and everyday behaviors. Over the four weeks, participants work on ten core areas, such as greeting people calmly, sitting nicely for petting, accepting handling and grooming, walking on a loose leash, moving through crowds, responding to sit, down, and stay cues, coming when called, behaving appropriately around other dogs, staying composed around distractions, and being comfortable during a short supervised separation. Dogs that pass the CGC test earn the official AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate, which is often a stepping stone to therapy or service dog certification, advanced obedience training, and responsible pet ownership. The CGC title is recognized by many landlords and insurance companies as proof of a well-behaved dog. This course suits owners who want to refine their dog’s manners, strengthen their bond, and prepare for more advanced training.

History, Mystery, Mayhem and Murder

Explore Dayton’s darker past on a guided walk through the cemetery, stopping at graves tied to victims and perpetrators of real crimes. Hear about a deathbed confession in the killing of 18-year-old Christine Kett, the story of Rose Shafor disguising herself to aid a lover, the case of Julius Kruse, and questions surrounding a possible Cincinnati Ripper connection to Dayton. The accounts are presented as they occurred, and some descriptions are graphic and may not be suitable for everyone. This two-hour experience involves substantial walking over hilly, uneven grass and may feel strenuous. It is not recommended for children, older adults, or anyone who may have difficulty with long distances. Meet at Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Wear comfortable walking shoes and consider bringing water. Tours proceed in rain, with the exception of thunder or lightning. Reservations are required. A suggested donation of $5 supports the Woodland Arboretum Foundation and its restoration, preservation, horticultural, and educational efforts that help sustain Woodland as a cultural resource for Dayton and Ohio.

Auditions for The Holy Rug

Auditions are being held at Dayton Playhouse for The Holy Rug, a single-performance staged reading of a new musical. The piece features story and book by Ray Gambrel, music by Terry O’Brien, and lyrics by Jeff Sams and Terry O’Brien, with direction by Annie Pesch and music direction by Brennan Paulin. Annie Pesch, Ray Gambrel, and accompanist Charles Larkowski will be in attendance. Those auditioning should prepare a 32‑bar cut and bring their own sheet music. A Bluetooth speaker will be available for anyone using an audio track. Participants will read sides, and audition songs may be recorded for the music director. Callbacks may be scheduled if needed. Questions or requests to submit an audition video can be sent to theholyrugmusical@gmail.com. The Holy Rug follows Harlan, a young man raised in a Pentecostal community who comes to understand his sexual identity. After confiding in his pastor and facing a harmful attempt to “cast out” what others perceive as a problem, he leaves and begins a journey marked by loss, pain, and ultimately acceptance. Casting seeks performers for Harlan, a baritone or tenor in his mid 20s to early 30s on a personal and spiritual journey. Other roles include his stern evangelical father, Dad, a bass or baritone in his early 40s to early 50s, and his sister Sissy, a mezzo soprano in her mid 20s to early 30s who finds her rebellious streak later in life. Pastor Ray, an evangelical preacher in his late 40s to early 50s, is a baritone or tenor, and Sister Pauline, his wife, is a mezzo or alto in her late 40s to late 50s. Skip, the pastor’s son and Harlan’s best friend, is a baritone in his 20s to early 30s. Sister Ova is a dynamic traveling preacher, mezzo or alto, mid 50s to late 60s. Brother Brice is a non-singing church member in the same age range who is notably self-focused. Edith Davenport is a drag queen and club owner, a larger-than-life baritone. Elder Thomas is a Mormon missionary, baritone, in his 20s to early 30s. Shirley MacLaine appears as a mezzo or soprano diva around 55. Approximately ten rehearsals are planned in the lead-up to the performance, which will be presented as a staged reading.

Gem City Pinball League - Season 17

Gem City Pinball League Season 17 meets at Canal Street Arcade and Deli on Mondays, with occasional exceptions for holidays or when the league is not in session. Registration is $20 per session, and players cover coin drop each week. Participants are placed in groups of three or four and play four randomly selected machines weekly, earning points based on finishing position. The season features eight weeks of regular play followed by two nights of finals, and each player competes on one finals night according to division placement. A cutoff in overall standings determines whether a player qualifies for A finals or B finals, and everyone is placed into one of these events. Finals formats may be adjusted based on league needs and turnout. Consistent attendance is important. There are no makeup weeks, but each player receives one dropped week that removes the lowest score from the season total. Missing three weeks results in removal from that season’s rankings and finals eligibility. Players who reach that threshold may still attend remaining league nights for casual play, though their results will not be recorded, and they can return in a future season if space allows. Communicating weekly attendance with league staff is requested. Sportsmanship is essential. Treating fellow players and officials with respect is required, and arguing rulings is not permitted. Because machines can experience mechanical issues, officials may pause or restart games when needed, and those decisions are final. Failure to follow league rules or conduct expectations can result in disqualification or removal.

Opening Reception for Member's Spotlight Exhibition: Teresa Olavarria: Lichen

An opening reception presents a member spotlight exhibition devoted to the quiet beauty of lichen. What may look like gray green patches on bark or stone reveals, with close attention, ornate structures, ruffled edges, and tiny spheres in gentle balance. These life forms are partnerships of algae or cyanobacteria with fungi, and their presence can reflect ecosystem health, underscoring how living systems are linked. Dayton based artist Teresa Olavarria turns these fleeting organisms into lasting artworks, working with enamel fused to copper and cast bronze finished with patina to echo their textures and hues. By fixing delicate growth in durable metals and glossy enamel, each piece serves as both inquiry and homage, encouraging a slower look at nature’s subtle complexity. All pieces in the exhibition are available for purchase.

REBEL WITH A CLAUSE - with Ellen Jovin in-person!

What began as a simple sidewalk table in Manhattan grew into a cross-country conversation about language and connection. Ellen Jovin set out a folding table with a sign that read Grammar Table, and curious pedestrians stopped to ask questions, share stories, and air grievances. She and her husband, filmmaker Brandt Johnson, then brought the table to all 50 states while he captured the encounters on camera, revealing a journey that reaches beyond grammar to the bonds that words can build in challenging times. This in-person program features a film about that adventure, plus opportunities to interact with Ellen. Before the film, she will host the Grammar Table to field questions, mediate family debates about usage, and hear complaints. After the screening, a Q&A with Ellen and Brandt will follow, then a signing of Ellen’s national bestselling book. Tickets are $20 each.

DLCA Summer Camp: Tiny Broadway Stars - Official

Young performers discover the joy of musical theatre in a half-day camp at the PNC Arts Annex at Dayton Live. Through lively movement, imaginative games, and songs chosen with their age in mind, campers will explore singing, dancing, and acting while building confidence, listening skills, and imagination in a welcoming setting. Storytelling, make-believe, and easy-to-learn choreography introduce what it means to work as an ensemble and perform together. Designed for children ages 4 to 7, the experience blends playful exploration with gentle skill-building. The week concludes with a casual sharing for family and friends that celebrates each child’s creativity and growth.
