ON VIEW | Beyond the Picturesque

The Taft Museum of Art highlights Ayana Ross as the 40th Duncanson Artist-in-Residence with a focused showing of seven figural paintings. Ross builds narrative portraits that carry emotional weight, drawing from lived experience to portray the resilience and layered dimensions of Black life. Everyday scenes become meaningful stories, touching on connections across generations, responses to current events, and the cultural dialogues that shape communities. Decorative details root the work in remembrance and continuity, while picturesque landscapes appear as a visual motif that nods to American ideals. The paintings place their subjects at the center of the scene and encourage contemplation about what has been passed down and what is still being made in the present.

Zoo Blooms

Each spring, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden turns its gardens and pathways into a vivid showcase of blossoms during Zoo Blooms, during which it is known as the Cincinnati Botanical Garden & Zoo. As one of only two accredited botanical gardens in Ohio, it presents one of the world's largest tulip displays, a seasonal highlight known as Tulip Mania. Bright swaths of yellow and white daffodils appear across the park, with early red and yellow tulips opening first before the main wave of blooms. More than 100,000 tulips span nearly every color, and over a million spring bulbs such as daffodils and hyacinths, together with thousands of flowering trees and shrubs, add even more color throughout the grounds. This abundance of blooms offers just a sampling of the variety and beauty found across the zoo.

The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer

A 45-minute, solo puppetry adventure that blends live performance with digital media shares a heartfelt tale of devotion during environmental collapse. In a world where ocean levels have surged and billions have perished, survivors tend farms perched on skyscrapers and mountaintops, and bold fixes have failed. Attempts at floating islands failed and sank, space probes came up empty, and enormous sponges, large enough to be seen from the moon, now decay. In a final bid for survival, a mission ventures into the deep ocean to search for a new home. Alvin Sputnik, grieving his wife, accepts the dangerous descent to help save humanity while following her spirit toward the underworld in hopes of reunion. Winner of multiple awards and known for sold-out runs in New York, Sydney, and Auckland, this small-scale epic weaves puppetry, technology, and multimedia into an acclaimed piece of theater.

ON VIEW | Beyond the Picturesque

The Taft Museum of Art welcomes Ayana Ross as the 40th Duncanson Artist-in-Residence with a focused presentation of seven figurative paintings. Known for portraiture that carries emotional weight and narrative depth, Ross portrays the quiet resilience and layered realities of Black life, drawing power from everyday scenes that speak beyond the moment. Often informed by her own life, these works consider connections across generations, respond to the present day, and engage with cultural conversations that shape society. Ornamental details root the images in remembrance, the safeguarding of the past, and a sense of continuity. Throughout the series, scenic landscape motifs serve as decorative elements that evoke American ideals, place her subjects at the fore, and encourage reflection on the legacies we inherit and the future we are shaping.

51st Annual Colonial Dames Talk and Tea

The 51st annual edition of the Colonial Dames Talk and Tea features a lecture by Dr. Tiffany Momon, Associate Professor of History at Sewanee, The University of the South, on the skill, labor, and lived experiences of Black craftspeople in eighteenth century Charleston, South Carolina. Focusing on builders, furniture makers, and other artisans, the talk explains how their expertise shaped the city’s architecture and material culture amid the realities of enslavement. By presenting craftsmanship as both economic force and cultural expression, it reframes authorship and legacy in the colonial era built environment and places Black makers at the center of Charleston’s history. The program takes place at the Cincinnati Art Museum, with the presentation in the Fath Auditorium and tea with light bites to follow in the Great Hall and Terrace Café. Admission requires a ticket. Blue Wisp Big Band

Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp Big Band marks 45 years of big band swing at Caffe Vivace. Founded in 1980 by drummer John Von Ohlen and trumpeter Don Johnson, the ensemble took its name from the Blue Wisp Jazz Club where it first took root. Von Ohlen arrived in the region after years with major jazz orchestras including those of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman, and he set out to unite local players into a world class big band in a lively tavern setting. Johnson helped assemble the horn section, while pianist Steve Schmidt and bassist Michael Sharfe were already performing with Von Ohlen at the Blue Wisp, which made the rhythm team easy to finalize. A Wednesday residency followed and the group quickly became a fixture in the city’s jazz life. Recording began in 1981 with an LP supported by WKRC, followed by four albums on the Mopro label created by Fred and Helen Morr. Those releases were reissued in the mid 1990s by Sea Breeze, with one set captured in Los Angeles during a 1984 West Coast tour. Through Helen Morr’s efforts, the music reached listeners across the United States and Europe, earning airplay and positive notice. Notable alumni include trumpeter Tim Hagans and bassist Lynn Seaton. After the original club closed in 2014, the band continued its weekly tradition at Japp’s Annex, Pirate’s Den, and Urban Artifact before settling into a new home at Caffe Vivace in Walnut Hills. The lineup features Jeremy Long and Jamie Walkenhauer on alto saxophone, Brent Gallaher and Dan Drees on tenor saxophone, Larry Dickson on baritone saxophone, Jeff Owen, Clarence Pawn and Brian Stevens on trombone with Gary Langhorst on bass trombone, Jeff Folkens, Hank Mautner, John Zappa and Kim Pensyl on trumpet, Steve Schmidt on piano, Mike Sharfe on bass, and Jim Leslie on drums. A $15 food and drink minimum applies per person, per set, if the party’s beverage purchases do not reach the minimum. Attendees who have not checked in within 15 minutes of the set start may have their seats released without refund. Tickets are non-refundable, with a one time transfer to a future Blue Wisp Big Band performance of equal value available when requested at least 24 hours before the performance begins.

UnchARTed: A Journey of Longing and Making in Miniature

At the Cincinnati Art Museum, artist Bakula Nayak leads UnchARTed: A Journey of Longing and Making in Miniature, a ticketed program that weaves storytelling, painting, and spoken-word poetry into a personal reflection on the exhibition Longing: Painting from the Pahari Kingdoms of the Northwest Himalayas. Through this creative lens, she explores longing, belonging, and power, raising questions about motherhood, migration, devotion, and how yearning can be held within the body. Drawing from time spent in Jaipur studying miniature painting as a curious outsider, Nayak connects centuries-old traditions to the present in an intimate way. The experience concludes with a hands-on session in miniature techniques, where participants experiment with traditional tools, including fine brushes and wasli paper long used by Indian miniature painters for centuries. This program is designed for adults, and teens ages 13 and up may attend when accompanied by an adult. Accessibility accommodations are available with advance notice.

Museum Mindfulness Yoga at Union Terminal & Character Strengths Journaling

Enjoy a mindful evening in the grand Rotunda at Union Terminal that blends a grounding yoga practice with creative reflection centered on personal character strengths. Sage Yoga guides the session to settle the body and clear the mind, creating space for intention and presence. A provided character strengths journal supports deeper reflection with prompts about how strengths show up, where growth is desired, and practical ways to put those qualities into action. There is also time to personalize the journal cover with color, words, and imagery for a meaningful keepsake. The experience closes with writing a commitment postcard that names a chosen strength and how it will be practiced. The Holocaust & Humanity Center will mail these postcards to participants four to six weeks later as a follow up that reconnects them with their intention. Completing the VIA Character Strengths Survey is required before registration. Bring a yoga mat, and plan to sign a waiver at check in. Blue Wisp Big Band

The Blue Wisp Big Band brings decades of big band swing to Caffè Vivace as it marks 46 years of music in Cincinnati. The current ensemble features alto saxophonists Jeremy Long and Jamie Walkenhauer, tenor saxophonists Brent Gallaher and Dan Drees, and baritone saxophonist Larry Dickson. The trombone section includes Jeff Owen, Clarence Pawn and Brian Stevens, with Gary Langhorst on bass trombone. Trumpets are handled by Jeff Folkens, Hank Mautner, John Zappa and Kim Pensyl, and the rhythm team is Steve Schmidt on piano, Mike Sharfe on bass and Jim Leslie on drums. Founded in 1980 by drummer John Von Ohlen and trumpeter Don Johnson, the band took its name from the Blue Wisp Jazz Club where it first took root. Von Ohlen arrived from years on the road with major jazz orchestras led by Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. After hearing the depth of local talent, he set out to build a world class big band that would give area musicians a steady outlet for jazz, and Johnson helped assemble the horn lineup. With pianist Steve Schmidt and bassist Michael Sharfe already working with Von Ohlen at the club, the core rhythm section came together quickly and a midweek residency soon took off. Recording activity began in 1981 with an LP supported by WKRC, followed by four albums on the Mopro label founded by Fred and Helen Morr. Those releases were reissued in the mid 1990s on two Sea Breeze CDs, including a set recorded in Los Angeles during a 1984 West Coast tour. Thanks to distribution efforts led by Helen Morr, the music reached listeners across the United States and Europe and earned airplay and reviews, with notable alumni including trumpeter Tim Hagans and bassist Lynn Seaton. After long-running Wednesday nights at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club until its closure in 2014, the band performed at Japp’s Annex, Pirate’s Den and Urban Artifact, and now calls Caffè Vivace in Walnut Hills its home. A 15 dollar food and drink minimum applies per person per set if a party’s beverage total does not reach that amount. If check in has not occurred shortly after a set begins, seats may be released for resale with no refund. Tickets are non refundable, with a one time transfer to a future Blue Wisp Big Band performance of equal value available if requested in advance of the start.
