The Science of Science Fiction with Dr. Frederick Walter

Astronomer Dr. Frederick Walter explores how real physics intersects with the imaginative worlds of science fiction, considering ideas such as a Star Trek transporter and a rotating spacecraft that creates artificial gravity as seen in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The talk looks at how writers including Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Gene Roddenberry, and Jules Verne anticipated technologies that resemble today’s handheld communicators, tablets, and satellites. Framed as speculative fiction, the presentation focuses on when storytelling honors the limits set by physical law, often referred to as hard science fiction, and reflects on what might have been, what exists now, and what could be possible. Weather permitting, in-person participants may view the night sky through telescopes with Hamptons Observatory astronomers after the lecture, and personal telescopes are welcome. Dr. Walter is an observational astronomer and Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from MIT and a PhD in astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley, and completed postdoctoral work at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He served on the instrument development team for the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope and has conducted observations with other space missions, including the International Ultraviolet Explorer. His research spans galactic novae, the formation of low mass stars, the life cycles of stars, and stellar magnetic activity. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Associated Universities for Research in Astronomy and is the Stony Brook representative to the Astronomical Society of New York. Presented in a hybrid format.

Silent Film Jazz Jam Session

The East End Jazz season culminates at Southampton Cultural Center with a live film and live jazz experiment that turns silent cinema into a canvas for spontaneous music making. Multimedia artist Cliff Baldwin has curated a collage of silent film clips, and participating performers shape the plot, mood, and pace in real time so the score becomes the dialogue of each scene. A professional rhythm section will support musicians and vocalists, and players receive prompts in advance, from familiar melodies and standards to driving rhythms and specific emotional arcs, to help transform known sounds into chases, reflections, and other on screen moments. Director Iris Ornig highlights that the format hands creative authorship to the artists, reconnecting music and moving pictures in the spirit of early cinema while encouraging the audience to imagine stories of their own. As the final jam before a summer break, it is open to all musicians and jazz enthusiasts, including local students of any age or skill level, and admission is free. East End Jazz is a nonprofit dedicated to performance and education across the East End, and the Cultural Center provides accessible performance, exhibition, and arts education opportunities for the greater Southampton community. This project is supported by the Statewide Community Regrants Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, administered by The Huntington Arts Council.

AMPLIFYING VOICES: A Human Trafficking Awareness Panel — The Church Sag Harbor

An informative discussion will bring awareness to human trafficking and what actionable steps can be taken to prevent it. Bianca C. Collins, Vice President of HARLI and enrolled tribal citizen of the Shinnecock Nation, Alyssa Harrilal, a survivor of human trafficking and member of the ECLI-VIBES Survivors board, and Nina Hobson, a former British detective and current Head of Security for global executive protection teams, are joined by moderator Patricia McCormick, the best-selling author of SOLD and Never Fall Down. All speakers and the moderator have unique expertise on human trafficking, providing a depth of knowledge and sensitivity aimed to illuminate a difficult yet critical topic. Following the discussion there will be a Q&A of pre-submitted questions from the audience. The discussion will address what human trafficking is, and how does happen locally, what current preventative measures are being pursued and legislated by governments and law enforcement, and what actionable steps can we take as a community to de-escalate the rising number of human trafficking cases. Sharing awareness of the trafficking that happens in our own local area is critical for galvanizing support and change. Come listen, hear, and believe the voices of survivors and help amplify their calls to action.
