The Extraordinary Caterpillar Film

Presented by The B-Friendly Farm and Gardens, a Broccolo Company, this screening at the Dryden Theater in The George Eastman House explores the often overlooked importance of caterpillars in healthy ecosystems. The Extraordinary Caterpillar follows scientists and community advocates into the small yet powerful world of these creatures, highlighting how they fuel biodiversity and support life around us. The film features Dr. Doug Tallamy, founder of the Homegrown National Park. After the screening, a panel will discuss ways to restore caterpillar populations with native plants in home yards and community spaces, featuring Dana Buchbinder of Eco-Spark in Toronto, Kyra Stevenson, the Nature Based Learning Coach for the Rochester City School District, Kevin Farrell, Senior Director of Conservation Programs at the Genesee Land Trust, and Laurie Broccolo, an environmental leader in landscape and construction. All proceeds benefit the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum.

June Adult Book Club

The June Adult Book Club focuses on Miss Major Speaks: Conversations with a Black Trans Revolutionary by Toshio Meronek. This powerful collection captures the voice of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a pioneering transgender elder and activist whose life spans the Stonewall riots, experiences at Bellevue psychiatric hospital and Attica Prison, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the realities of white supremacy. Her story includes sharing knowledge with other sex workers during the early drag ball scene of the late 1960s and helping launch one of the country’s first needle exchange programs from a van. The book blends candor, warmth, and humor while offering guidance for black, brown, queer, and trans youth seeking liberation. In recognition of Pride month, Lyell Branch staff facilitate the June read with a discussion planned for the end of the month. The title is available through MCLS and Libby.
