James McMurtry and the Martial Law Review bring The Black Dog & The Wandering Boy Tour, with special guest BettySoo. The tour shares its name with McMurtry’s 10 song album on New West Records, co produced with Don Dixon, whose credits include R.E.M. and The Smithereens. It is his first release in four years and follows The Horses and the Hounds, a record praised by Uncut and rated 8.0 by Pitchfork. The album features appearances by Sarah Jarosz, Charlie Sexton, Bonnie Whitmore and Bukka Allen, alongside the Martial Law Review, with Tim Holt on guitar and accordion, Cornbread on bass and Daren Hess on drums. These new story songs draw on threads of family history, from a Ken Kesey sketch used as the cover art to hallucinations experienced by his father, the writer Larry McMurtry, and a poem from a family friend. Known for turning small details into vivid scenes, McMurtry balances humor and heartache over arrangements that nod to Americana while carving their own space, and his influence is cited by younger songwriters such as Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell. Integrative Bio EnhancementFinn Blitz & Action Championship #1776
GM Alexander Lenderman is slated to take part in both rated tournaments, which feature an Action event followed by a Blitz event. The Action tournament offers four rounds at G/25 with a 5-second delay, and Blitz includes ten rounds at G/3 with a 2-second delay. The entry fee is $5. To play in Blitz, each participant must complete at least one game in the Action event, and Blitz runs as a single open section with a $60 first prize. The Action tournament welcomes players of any age and is split into three sections with separate prizes. All participants must hold a current USCF membership, and on-site registration for membership is available before the first round. The Qualified section is for ratings over 1200, while the Youth Open and Adult Open are for players rated under 1201 or unrated. All Action sections are both Standard and Quick USCF rated. The Action prize fund totals $140, with two-way ties splitting evenly and ties among more than two players or teams resulting in no prize. First place awards are $60 for the Qualified section, $20 for the Adult Open, and $20 for the Youth Open. A $40 family team prize is also offered by combining the scores of two family members such as parents and children, siblings, or adult couples, using the top two scores if more than two family members participate, with a maximum combined total of 8 points. Pairings within sections may be adjusted to promote competitive games and better rating opportunities, regardless of a player’s tournament score. If a section has fewer than four players, it will merge with a lower section while keeping prize eligibility intact, and all prizes are guaranteed. Playing up a section is not allowed by request, but playing down one section may be permitted. The tournament director may move players as needed to reduce byes and mismatches so that rounds remain competitive. Late entries are welcome, and players arriving before a round begins can be paired with a similarly rated opponent. The $5 entry applies even if someone plays only a single game. Complimentary bottled water and snacks are provided. Boards, sets, clocks, scoresheets, and pens are available, so no personal equipment is required. USCF membership is required for all sections and can be started or renewed at the club. The organizers emphasize that Action chess delivers four full games in the time of one traditional round, creating more opportunities to analyze completed games and pursue rating gains, and describe it as a competitive and enjoyable path for ambitious players and rising scholastic competitors.

MVP Arena - Albany, NYThe Egg Presents: The Lone Bellow
At The Egg, The Lone Bellow steps into a fresh era shaped by their forthcoming sixth studio album, What A Time To Be Alive. For the first time the trio of Zach Williams, Brian Elmquist, and Kanene Pipkin wrote alongside their touring bandmates, drummer Julian Dorio and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Geertsma, channeling the spark of their shows into songs grounded in warmth, honesty, and human connection. The album was recorded live in Muscle Shoals following a writing retreat in a converted Kentucky firehouse, and it holds space for celebration and reckoning in equal measure, touching on friendship, loss, love, and resilience. The music features rich vocal blend and heartfelt lyrics that move easily among folk, rock, and gospel. The tracklist ranges from the gritty opener After The Rain to the closing title song, with anthemic moments like Common Folk and I'm Here For You alongside intimate reflections such as You Were Leaving and Night Goes Black. Since their 2013 debut the band has performed on The Tonight Show, Austin City Limits, and The Late Show, reached the top of the Americana charts, and headlined revered venues including Carnegie Hall and the Ryman Auditorium. Even after setbacks like the theft of early recordings, the groundswell of fan support affirmed that this is music made for community.

Guster brings an acoustic performance to The Egg in Albany with Tōth also on the bill. The longtime quartet of Ryan Miller, Adam Gardner, Brian Rosenworcel, and Luke Reynolds has spent more than three decades together, earning Billboard-charting songs, collaborating with Steve Lillywhite and Richard Swift, and cultivating a devoted following through touring and a communal live spirit. Their ninth album, Ooh La La, channels that ongoing creative drive with a warm blend of acoustic guitars and piano, shaped with producer Josh Kaufman at Isokon Studio in Woodstock, with additional production by Ron Aniello and Rich Costey and mixes primarily by Peter Katis. The title draws from a lyric in the lead single Keep Going, co-written with Rob Kleiner, which balances honesty about turbulent times with an undercurrent of hope. The album also features moments like All Day, developed early in the writing process and recorded at Guilford Sound in Vermont, that reflect the band’s direct songwriting and collaborative approach. Tōth, the project of Brooklyn songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alex Toth of Rubblebucket, is known for emotionally frank songs, a compelling stage presence, and expressive trumpet work. The third album, And The Voice Said, was created with Grammy-nominated collaborator Caroline Rose and includes a feature from Kimbra.
