Rotary ParkFrom Posture to Page: An Immersion in Maitri Space Awareness and Creative Writing
Led by Miriam Hall and Melissa Moore, this in-person immersion invites participants into a field of deep listening where body, mind, space, and language meet. Through a unique blend of meditation, Maitri Space Awareness, and contemplative writing, the retreat offers a compassionate way to explore experience without trying to fix or interpret it. Gathering in Corrales, New Mexico, the program centers on Maitri Space Awareness, a Dzogchen-based posture practice originated by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, interwoven with compassion-centered writing and experiential work with the Five Buddha Families. Expect a daily rhythm anchored in meditation, with opportunities for individual meditation interviews. Sessions may include lying outdoors in specific Maitri postures while working with colored lenses connected to the Five Buddha Families, along with open periods for unstructured wandering, art, and journaling. Brief teachings on the Buddha Families pair with simple writing prompts, followed by optional sharing in confidential circles grounded in care and respect. The emphasis is not on literary polish or performance. Writing arises from embodied awareness, attuned to personal and collective life, as well as to sensation, mood, place, and the weather within and around us. The atmosphere is calm, spacious, and rooted in mutual respect, and there are no prerequisites, so newcomers to meditation, Maitri Space Awareness, and contemplative writing are welcome. Miriam Hall, founder of Herspiral Arts, has offered contemplative and creative practices for over two decades. She is an authorized teacher of Maitri Space Awareness, serves on lead faculty for Karuna Training, and is co-author of books on Miksang Contemplative Photography with John McQuade. Melissa Moore, Ph.D., is a long-time contemplative practitioner and educator trained as a contemplative psychotherapist at Naropa University, with a doctorate in Psychological Anthropology from CIIS.
