Joe Cirotti Trio & Jackson Pines Band at Avenel PAC

A performance at Avenel Performing Arts Center brings together the Joe Cirotti Trio and Jackson Pines for a program rooted in American traditions. The Joe Cirotti Trio, hailing from the Appalachian ridge of northwest New Jersey, mixes the members’ multi-instrumental backgrounds with influences from folk, jazz, country, and bluegrass. Guitarist Joe Cirotti, upright bassist Pete Lister, and Timmy Coyle on mandolin and guitar shape music that honors classic styles while welcoming new turns, their connection built on close ties, a working-class devotion to picking, and a shared fondness for roots music and whiskey. Jackson Pines, the indie folk duo of Joe Makoviecki and James Black from Jackson, New Jersey, grew out of their earlier work together in Thomas Wesley Stern. Their first full-length, Purgatory Road, offered ten original songs recorded in a barn with Simone Felice, and a subsequent EP earned praise from New Jersey Stage for storytelling grounded in American roots. They appeared on PBS’s State of the Arts, released a second album produced by Ro Karunaratne, and premiered it at the Sea Hear Now Festival where they opened for Dr. Dog and Ani DiFranco. The duo later toured Close To Home and developed the Ridgway family repertoire and other folk material that became Pine Barrens Volume One, recorded with Cranston Dean, Max Carmichael, and James Herdman. The traditional song Mt. Holly Jail arrived ahead of the album, followed by performances at SteelStacks, WXPN, and a headlining set at the New Jersey Folk Festival at Rutgers University. Additional features on NPR stations such as Prairie Public Radio, KBCS, and WXPN, along with a PBS Here’s The Story episode, highlighted their ties to Albert Music Hall. Pine Barrens Volume One was named Album of the Year by The Aquarian Weekly.

Dipanjan Guha

Following a successful tour the previous year, sitar virtuoso Dipanjan Guha returns with Antoheen, sharing the warmth and sparkle of his instrument at Kallol Club. Born in Kolkata and steeped in the Senia Maihar gharana, he is celebrated for shaping vivid moods through melody, balancing meditative depth with radiant color. Intensive study with Pandit Kushal Das followed, along with valuable learning from the late Pandit Ajoy Sinha Roy and, for a period, Pandit Jatin Bhattacharjya. He has performed widely across India and abroad, including the United States, Europe, and South Africa, earning appreciation from audiences and critics, and he has contributed music to independent films. He is also a Computer Science and Engineering graduate of Jadavpur University, where he was recognized as the top all-round graduate of his year. Art Train Day - Johnny Kasun, Heather Maloney, Vance Gilbert & Abbie Gardner

Woodbridge United Methodist Church hosts a concert aligned with the Art Train activities across Woodbridge, Avenel, and Rahway, alongside the Main Street street fair. The program features Abbie Gardner, Vance Gilbert, Heather Maloney, and Johnny Kasun. Gardner, a dobro player and songwriter known from Red Molly, performs songs of love and loss highlighted by expressive slide guitar. Her 2022 album "DobroSinger" reached #11 on the Billboard Blues chart and #2 on the Folk DJ chart, with praise from Bluegrass Unlimited, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and American Songwriter. That intimate set contrasts with her previous album, which included a co-write with Chris Stapleton and full band arrangements. Gilbert’s newest release, "The Mother Of Trouble," includes contributions from Lori McKenna, Joey Landreth, and Joe K. Walsh. A Philadelphia-area native, he first pursued R&B and jazz in college before embracing acoustic storytelling, later joining Shawn Colvin’s 1992 Fat City tour and appearing at events such as the Newport, Winnipeg, Rocky Mountain, Calgary and Falcon Ridge folk festivals, Australia’s Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals, Mountain Stage, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Nashville’s Lyman Auditorium, and The Barns at Wolf Trap. Maloney has performed internationally more than a thousand times and has eight previous studio albums. Her ninth and most personal record, "Exploding Star" (released January 31, 2025), was written after her father’s death and was recorded and shared at the urging of friends and family. Earlier work includes "Soil In The Sky" with collaborations from Taylor Goldsmith on "We Were Together" and Rachael Price on "Enigma," the Bill Reynolds–produced "Making Me Break," and "Woodstock" with Darlingside, earning recognition from outlets like the New York Times and figures such as Graham Nash. Her music has aired on NPR stations, with live appearances on eTown and AudioTree, and her song "Nightstand Drawer" appeared in the season finale of the CBS series Elementary. Kasun is a guitarist, songwriter, and producer originally from Leesburg, Virginia, now based near Red Bank and Asbury Park. He spans genres from classical to rock, specializes in fingerstyle, also performs acoustic guitar with vocals, and plays in the So Shot Band around the Jersey Shore. After presenting a Jim Croce tribute at Avenel PAC, he appears here as a solo acoustic act with original songs and select covers.

Richard Barone & Glenn Mercer "Hazy Cosmic Jive" full band at Avenel PAC

At Avenel Performing Arts Center, Richard Barone of the Bongos and Glenn Mercer of the Feelies lead Hazy Cosmic Jive with a full band, presenting a duo-centered set that dives into the adventurous rock that followed the Velvet Underground in the mid 1970s. The program highlights songs from landmark albums by David Bowie, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and T. Rex, reflecting the music that shaped their work with The Feelies and The Bongos. They are joined by Feelies percussionist Dave Weckerman on drums, bassist Bob Torsello of Slambovian Circus of Dreams, and special guests. Richard Barone is a recording artist, performer, producer, and author who helped spark the indie rock scene in Hoboken as frontman of the Bongos and later brought chamber pop into focus with his solo debut “cool blue halo.” His production and collaboration credits span many genres and include Tony Visconti, Donovan, Lou Reed, and Pete Seeger. He has created scores and staged large-scale concerts at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and SummerStage in Central Park. His memoir Frontman: Surviving The Rock Star Myth was published by Backbeat Books. His album Sorrows & Promises and his book Music + Revolution (Bloomsbury) celebrate the 1960s Greenwich Village scene, where he lives. He teaches “Music + Revolution” at The New School’s School of Jazz & Contemporary Music, has served on the Board of Governors of The Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), serves on the Advisory Board of Anthology Film Archives, and hosts Folk Radio on WBAI New York. Glenn Mercer began on bass in neighborhood bands, switched to guitar while studying art, and formed the Out Kids with Dave Weckerman on drums. After writing original material and playing shows in NYC, Bill Million joined. When the Out Kids ended, Mercer, Weckerman, and Million continued together, with Mercer on lead vocals and Million on second guitar, and they became the Feelies. The band released three albums in the 1980s, including Crazy Rhythms, before disbanding. Mercer and Weckerman then formed Wake Ooloo and issued three albums in the 1990s. Mercer also played with Sunburst and East of Venus, followed by his release Wheels In Motion. He reunited with the Feelies in 2008 for ongoing live performances and released Here Before in 2011. The Feelies have continued performing.

At the Woodbridge Main Library, this seminar covers essential estate planning tools, including wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, along with guidance on Medicaid and long term care considerations. Registration is required. The session is led by Suzana Das, an attorney with more than 20 years of experience in business, real estate, and estate planning. Her background in business and estate litigation informs a thorough approach to creating plans that protect families and assets and that work for loved ones when it matters most. She graduated from Seton Hall Law School in 2001, worked with several law firms, and later founded Das Law, LLC. Her career has spanned business law, complex commercial litigation, employment law, insurance defense, and estate litigation, and she now concentrates on estate planning, business administration, and succession planning. Jed Harrelson and Jerron Paxton w/ Dennis Lichtman co-bill in Parker Press Park

At Parker Press Park, a co-bill brings together Nashville-based soul artist Jed Harrelson and the duo of Jerron Paxton with Dennis Lichtman. Harrelson blends soul, rock, and R&B into songs centered on connection, creating a sound that feels both uplifting and familiar. He has independently released 15 songs in the past three years and is currently developing his debut project, recording at home with his brother Hank as engineer. Raised in Texarkana, Arkansas, he refined his craft in Fayetteville before relocating to Nashville in January 2020, and he now tours the country with his band in a gold van nicknamed The Loaf. Paxton and Lichtman are internationally recognized multi-instrumentalists and vocalists whose partnership began with a 2017 video project at the Louis Armstrong House Museum. They have toured throughout the United States and abroad together since 2019, recently released their first full-length duo album, and served as Artists-In-Residence at Symphony Space in New York for the 2024 to 2025 season. Paxton, a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, shares a wide range of Black folk traditions, from stride piano shaped by New Orleans and New York, to deep blues on guitar and harmonica, to early rural fiddle and banjo music, ragtime, and other turn-of-the-century styles, inviting listeners to absorb this heritage as part of a long American story. Lichtman is a globe-traveling bandleader and a master of clarinet, mandolin, violin, and more. He has led the long-running traditional jazz sessions at Mona’s Bar in New York City since 2007, noted by the Wall Street Journal as a focal point for a rising late-night community of swing and trad jazz players. His credits include work with David Byrne, The Lovestruck Balladeers, Pokey LaFarge, Ghost Train Orchestra, Jim Kweskin, and his own groups The Brain Cloud and Mona’s Hot Four, along with his all-original release Secret Workshop.

Jay Nash & Garrison Starr co-bill in Parker Press Park

Jay Nash and Garrison Starr share the stage in a co-bill at Parker Press Park. Nash’s path began with childhood listening that shifted from hard rock on a portable record player to the connective spark he found in the Grateful Dead and the introspective songs of Cat Stevens. That discovery led him from his first guitar to finding his voice as a singer, player, and writer, and eventually to stages far and wide. Starr, a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and producer, introduced her major-label debut, 18 Over Me, in 1997 on Geffen. Since then she has released over a dozen EPs and LPs, with songs featured across television and film including Grey’s Anatomy, Nashville, Pretty Little Liars, Hart of Dixie, Switched at Birth, Rookie Blue, Army Wives, and Brothers & Sisters, along with campaigns for brands such as Pandora, Virgin Mobile, McDonald’s, and Fisher Price. Together they present a performance that highlights seasoned musicianship, distinct voices, and storytelling that spans rock, folk, and Americana influences.
