As Mia leaves the Community’s rules behind, she discovers that reading can carry you to other worlds and that readers and writers can shape one another in unexpected ways. Her path moves through heartbreak, love, and time, revealing that time may be more flexible than it appears and that love can outlast the ties that bind. As a girl she fell in love with a book, and as a young woman she steps back into the past and falls for a brilliant writer, raising urgent questions about what might happen if Hawthorne had never written The Scarlet Letter or if Mia had not found it when she needed it most.
