Food For Thought Book Club

Food For Thought Book Club features The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman. Copies are available at the Circulation Desk, and registration is recommended. The novel follows Mia Jacob, whose life inside the Community, a restrictive cult in western Massachusetts that cuts off contact with the outside world, is transformed by a book. The Scarlet Letter, written nearly two centuries earlier, seems to mirror the experiences of Mia and her mother Ivy. As Mia leaves the Community’s rules behind, she discovers that reading can carry you to other worlds and that readers and writers can shape one another in unexpected ways. Her path moves through heartbreak, love, and time, revealing that time may be more flexible than it appears and that love can outlast the ties that bind. As a girl she fell in love with a book, and as a young woman she steps back into the past and falls for a brilliant writer, raising urgent questions about what might happen if Hawthorne had never written The Scarlet Letter or if Mia had not found it when she needed it most.
