Maggie O’Farrell with "Land"

Maggie O’Farrell appears at The Music Hall as part of Writers On a New England Stage for a conversation about her new novel, Land, with Rebecca Lavoie of NHPR moderating. Tickets are $48 and include a copy of the book. The program is presented in partnership with New Hampshire Public Radio, and the presenting sponsor is the University of New Hampshire. Land unfolds in 1865 on a rugged peninsula facing the Atlantic, where Tomás and his young son, Liam, are charting Ireland for the Ordnance Survey in the aftermath of the Great Hunger. Tomás is determined that his maps will bear witness to the catastrophe. A disquieting encounter in a small copse sends him off course, setting off changes that ripple through his family. With British soldiers expecting the work to be complete, Liam, only ten, confronts his father’s sudden transformation while trying to finish the mapping and get them home. The novel delves into separation and reunion, loss and renewal, colonization and resistance. It threads together buried treasure, interconnected lives, ancient woodland, persistent ghosts, a loyal dog, and the idea that land and history never truly fade. At its heart, it is a story of endurance with resonance across time. O’Farrell, born in Derry in 1972, is the author of Hamnet, which won both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Women’s Prize for Fiction, as well as The Marriage Portrait, After You’d Gone, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, The Hand That First Held Mine, which received the Costa Novel Award, and Instructions for a Heatwave. She is also the author of the memoir I Am, I Am, I Am and lives in Edinburgh.

Mini-Crystal Wire Tree Workshop! $29 + $15 material fee

Create a miniature crystal tree with guidance from Emily O’Brien of all hearts everything in a calm, welcoming workshop that uses copper wire and crystal gems. Participants receive gentle, step-by-step instruction with all materials included, and everyone completes a handmade tree to take home the same day. Copper is often described as supportive for physical and emotional well-being, believed by some to ease inflammation, enhance energy flow and vitality, balance chakras, reduce microbes, and amplify thoughts and communication. The crystals featured carry a range of associations, such as amethyst for relaxation and spiritual awareness, rose quartz for love and emotional care, clear quartz for clarity and focus, citrine for motivation and abundance while easing negativity, moss agate for balance and tranquility, labradorite for protection and transformation, red jasper for grounding and courage, obsidian for protection and releasing blockages, fluorite for mental clarity and decision-making, sodalite for truth, logic, and intuition, green aventurine for prosperity and good luck, tiger’s eye for confidence, courage, and balanced energy, and pyrite for willpower, protection, and steady drive. Together, copper and these stones are presented as a harmonious combination for a healing home environment. 3S Artspace welcomes the outdoor Loading Dock Concert Series with a night featuring Ezra Cohen and Megan From Work. This all ages show is free to attend, with a suggested donation of $12. Expect an open air setting that pairs Portsmouth summer views with live music from rising regional artists and familiar favorites. While you are on site, explore the Gallery, the Lobby Gallery, and the Shop at 3S, which are always free and open to the public. Ezra Cohen and The Big City Band hail from Dover, New Hampshire, with songwriter Ezra Cohen steering a hook heavy, heart on sleeve sound rooted in 1990s power pop and alternative rock, nodding to bands like The Replacements, The Lemonheads, and Gin Blossoms. Daniel Mason with "Country People"

Writers On a New England Stage presents Daniel Mason at The Music Hall for a program centered on Country People, with tickets priced at $47 and including a signed copy of the book. The novel follows Miles Krzelewski, a loving husband and imaginative father who spins outrageous bedtime tales, owns a truffle dog despite living where truffles do not grow, and struggles to finish a long-overdue PhD in Russian folktales. When his wife, Kate, takes a visiting professorship amid the forests of Vermont, he resolves to get his life on track. Instead, his knack for befriending anyone anywhere pulls him into the orbit of striking new acquaintances, including an apparition-like arborist, a biochemist fixated on scythes, a Shakespearean seductress, and a snowflake photographer who files the world’s delusions on thousands of index cards in a catalog titled “Inventory of Wrong Ideas.” What begins as diversion shifts when Miles uncovers a peculiar local legend that may be more than small-town lore. The story explores marriage and parenthood, belief and storytelling, and how people find connection in a fragmented world. Mason is the author of The Piano Tuner, The Winter Soldier, A Registry of My Passage Upon the Earth, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and North Woods, named a Top Ten Book of 2023 by both the New York Times and the Washington Post and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He teaches in Stanford University’s Department of Psychiatry. Writers On a New England Stage is presented in partnership with New Hampshire Public Radio, with the University of New Hampshire as the presenting sponsor.

An Evening with Gillian Welch & David Rawlings

The Music Hall hosts an evening with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, longtime collaborators whose work has shaped contemporary acoustic and American folk music for more than twenty-five years. Widely recognized by leading music publications for their influence on the tradition, they are celebrated for finely woven harmonies, storytelling, and meticulous musicianship. Their partnership gained early momentum when Emmylou Harris recorded Welch’s Orphan Girl, followed by the acclaimed 1996 debut Revival with producer T Bone Burnett and the stark duo set Hell Among the Yearlings in 1998. In 2000, Welch contributed as associate producer, performer, and songwriter to the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, which won the GRAMMY for Album of the Year. At the same time, they earned acclaim for Time (The Revelator), often cited as a landmark of its era. Beginning with that release, they have self produced and issued their albums on their own Acony Records, underscoring a steadfast commitment to independence. Their range stretches from the fuller textures of Soul Journey and the Dave Rawlings Machine project, including A Friend of a Friend, to the intimate return to form on The Harrow and the Harvest, which drew multiple GRAMMY nominations along with honors at the Americana Music Association’s awards. Subsequent chapters include Nashville Obsolete under the Dave Rawlings Machine name, production work by Rawlings for artists such as Willie Watson, Dawes, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Robyn Hitchcock, and the song Cumberland Gap from Poor David’s Almanack, a GRAMMY nominee that appeared in the film The Gentlemen. To celebrate two decades together, they opened the Boots series on Acony to share archival recordings. Further milestones include Welch receiving the Thomas Wolfe Prize for Literature, an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and a GRAMMY win for Best Folk Album for All the Good Times. Recent recognitions such as the Berklee American Masters Award and a Lifetime Achievement for Songwriting from the Americana Music Association reflect their enduring legacy. Tickets are priced at $59, $75, $99, and $125.

Ethan Robbins of Cold Chocolate—Tuesdays on the Terrace Summer Concert Series

Experience an evening on the terrace with Ethan Robbins of Cold Chocolate as part of the Tuesdays on the Terrace Outdoor Summer Concert Series at Strawbery Banke. Robbins, the guitarist and songwriter for the Americana group, blends folk, funk, and bluegrass into a distinctive sound. Classically trained on violin from an early age, he embraced bluegrass at Oberlin College and took to the guitar as a teenager after discovering influential albums such as The Band’s Music from Big Pink, Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, John Hartford’s Steam Powered Aereo-plane, Hank Williams Live at the Grand Ole Opry, and the Grateful Dead’s Workingman’s Dead. Those roots continue to inspire his original work. Cold Chocolate has become a notable name in Americana, with Robbins named a Freshgrass Guitar Award finalist in 2024. The band has shared bills with Leftover Salmon and David Grisman and performs at venues and festivals across the country. Settle into a summer evening surrounded by historic homes and gardens, and bring a lawn chair or blanket for acoustic, Americana-leaning music. Admission is free for members, $8 for nonmembers, and free for children under 3. Concerts take place rain or shine, and in poor weather the performance moves indoors to the lecture hall at the Lawrence J. Yerdon Visitors Center, where seating is limited.
