Spring Break Skill Development Camp

Make the most of spring break with a three-day basketball skills clinic at Bishop Brady High School designed for athletes in grades 3 through 12. Each session blends focused instruction with live play, with the first hour dedicated to targeted skill work and the second hour devoted to scrimmages that put those skills into action. The curriculum spans three themes across the clinic, progressing from refining shooting technique, to handling the ball confidently under pressure, and then building basketball IQ with an emphasis on understanding why as well as how so that smart reads create easy points. Pricing options include an early rate of $125 for the full three days, a standard rate of $150 for the complete clinic, and $60 for a single day.

Spring Leaf Collection

Concord’s spring curbside leaf program returns for households that receive city trash service. Set out only leaves and make sure they are contained in biodegradable yard waste bags or in sturdy containers clearly marked for leaves. Loose piles are not collected in the spring, since bulk pickup happens only in the fall. A revised weekly setout approach now aligns with the fall bagged program, allowing crews to collect at any point during the week and not necessarily on the same day as trash, depending on volume. Branches, brush, and plastic bags are not accepted. Residents who prefer to drop off material can take leaves to the Fort Eddy Road Reprocessing Center operated by Raymond’s Landscaping LLC when it is open for the season. Drop-off is free with proof of residency for loads smaller than a non commercial pickup truck. Residents must empty containers at the site so staff can verify loads contain only leaves. Bags are not required for drop off, and any bins or barrels used to transport leaves must be brought back home.

These Familiar Walls

Horror author C. J. Dotson returns to Gibson's Bookstore to present These Familiar Walls in a conversation with fellow horror writer Sam Rebelein. The novel centers on Amber, whose uneasy childhood friendship with a deeply troubled new neighbor leaves wounds that echo far into adulthood. After she inherits her childhood home, moving in with her husband and two children for a fresh start, the house begins to press in with disquieting signs that go beyond grief and everyday stress. Disorienting trances, a reflection that refuses to meet her eyes, and a voice gathering in the shadows force her to face a threat that feels terrifyingly real, along with the dangerous truths she has tried to bury. This suburban chiller will appeal to readers of T. Kingfisher, Cassandra Khaw, and Catriona Ward. The discussion pairs Dotson, author of The Cut, with Rebelein, author of Galloway's Gospel and the Bram Stoker Award-nominated Edenville, whose short fiction has appeared in venues including PseudoPod and The Deadlands.

World Labyrinth Day 2026!

Petals in the Pines serves as a World Labyrinth Day site, inviting people of all or no faith traditions to experience the calm and connection of labyrinth walking close to home. In New Hampshire there are fewer than 30 publicly accessible labyrinths, and only a few host World Labyrinth Day activities, making this gathering a special opportunity. The property features two woodland labyrinths with separate entrances and exits so multiple visitors can walk without needing to pass each other. Love and Grace is a medieval-style stone labyrinth set high above Hayward Brook and reached by a 3/4-mile round-trip walk. The Peace labyrinth rests among shady hemlocks and offers a quiet, family-friendly place to focus. Admission is $7 per person, with infants admitted at no charge, or free with a 2026 Season Pass. Entry includes both labyrinths, more than two miles of trails and paths, and access to the Arbor Day certified outdoor classroom, play space, and picnic area. Trails can be uneven and slippery, so wear sturdy shoes and hike at your own risk. Strollers are not suitable for the terrain, and pets should be left at home. Register and pay on the Farm Stand Porch upon arrival. Optional ways to deepen the experience include a nature journaling session with Certified Instructor Heidi Colburn for $10 per person, with limited space and an advance registration option that provides a $2 per person discount on World Labyrinth Day admission. Concord Spring Leaf Collection

Concord’s spring curbside leaf pickup is back for residents who receive city trash service. Leaves must be set out in biodegradable bags for yard waste or in sturdy containers clearly labeled for leaves. Loose piles are not collected in spring, and bulk pickup is a fall-only service. A program update aligns the spring schedule with the fall bagged collection. Residents are asked to put leaves out on a consistent weekly setout rather than on their usual trash day, which lets crews collect at any point during the week depending on volume. Branches, brush, and plastic bags are not accepted. Residents also have a drop-off option at the reprocessing center operated by Raymond’s Landscaping. Drop-off is free with proof of residency for loads smaller than a non-commercial pickup truck. Materials must be emptied on site so staff can confirm they contain only acceptable leaves. Bags are not required for drop-off, and any containers used to transport leaves must be taken back home. Operating hours can be weather dependent and may change, so check ahead before visiting.

Diane Les Becquets presents Where the Water Meets the Sky

Diane Les Becquets returns to Gibson's Bookstore to discuss her new novel, Where the Water Meets the Sky, in conversation with her friend and fellow author Katie Towler. The book opens with a winter blaze on Michigan’s Garden Peninsula that destroys a farmhouse, leaving a child to slip into the woods with matches in hand. A decade later, Abby, a keen observer of birds and the natural world, goes back to Garden to help her uncle with a tree study and to reconnect with the lakes, forests, farms, and fisheries that shaped her. When her best friend Brew brings her to a party, she meets Seda, who is trying to leave an abusive ex, and Abby leads her to an empty cabin that becomes a refuge for them both. Across the summer of 1996, Abby navigates unreturned feelings for Brew, her care for the people and ecosystems around her, and a pressing need to recover what happened on the night of the fire as she searches for truth, love, and a fuller sense of self. Readers of Tell Me Everything and Heartwood, and admirers of the nature-focused work of Helen Macdonald and Richard Powers, will recognize the blend of intimate character work and deep attention to place. Les Becquets is the author of Breaking Wild and The Last Woman in the Forest. Breaking Wild earned starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and Booklist, was an Indie Next pick and a national bestseller, appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition, won the Colorado Book Award in Fiction and the New Hampshire Outstanding Work of Fiction, and was shortlisted for the Reading the West Book Award in Fiction. Katie Towler is the author of the novels Snow Island, Evening Ferry, and Island Light, and the memoir The Penny Portsmouth of Portsmouth. With Ilya Kaminsky, she co-edited A God in the House. Her writing has appeared in Ploughshares, The Sun, Agni, Literary Hub, Poetry International, and other publications. She has taught in the Mountainview MFA Program in Writing and lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Deborah Francis presents Discomfort in the Manic Mind

Deborah Francis visits Gibson's Bookstore to discuss her memoir, Discomfort in the Manic Mind. The book traces a lifetime shaped by mental illness, from early childhood trauma through adult years, depicting more than forty years living with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, also called manic depression. It moves through heartbreak and celebration, betrayal and friendship, grief and relief, capturing the intense peaks and valleys that accompany the condition. Francis writes candidly about stigma, medication side effects, and the effort to sustain a professional career, while underscoring her resolve to keep going. Excerpts from her journals are woven into the narrative in step with the events she recounts, offering an intimate view of her experience. Her background includes recognition as the 2009 Nationally Awarded Coordinator of the Year for NAMI NH's "In Our Own Voice" Speakers Bureau, along with service as a state trainer and presenter. Through NAMI NH, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, she found a platform to share her recovery journey living with manic depression, now commonly known as bipolar disorder.

Monarch Waystations Session Two

This three part program explores the sharp decline of Monarch butterflies since the early 1990s and offers practical steps for conservation at home. With guidance from NH Audubon staff, participants work toward designing a Monarch Waystation they can plant in a yard, neighborhood, or workplace. A waystation is a patch of native plants that supports Monarchs through their full annual cycle and also benefits other pollinators. The second session features a guided walk focused on real world examples. Participants revisit the Monarch life cycle and the habitat needs of each stage, learn to recognize larval host plants and adult nectar sources, consider how these gardens help other native pollinators, explore layouts that best serve Monarchs, and discuss ongoing maintenance. This session starts in the PSNH room at the McLane Center, then moves outside to a pollinator garden and meadow, and will take place primarily outdoors. All outdoor areas on the route have accessible trails suitable for a range of mobility levels. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Clipboards, writing tools, handouts, and interpretive materials are provided. Attendance indicates agreement to NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver. Working with a sloyd knife, a hook knife, an axe, and a saw, participants practice foundational carving strokes and learn how to turn green wood into useful, beautiful spoons that can be made at home or by a campfire. The curriculum covers spoon function and design, which wood species work well and how to find them, how to rough out blanks, safety throughout the process, introductory sharpening, and finishing techniques. The first day features learning exercises and warm up projects, along with carving a first spoon from a prepared blank. On the second day, everyone roughs out another spoon, possibly two, and continues carving to reinforce and refine skills. Lunch is provided. This class is for adults. A $40 materials fee applies. If you do not already own one, plan to purchase a Mora #120 carving knife from the instructor at the class for $24 in cash, or source one ahead of time. Consider bringing a notebook and pen and cut resistant gloves if you are concerned about cuts. Dress for the weather since the class will likely take place outdoors. If it is especially cold, sessions can move into the shop. The available restroom is an outhouse. Tuition is offered on a sliding scale, not including materials. The Supporter level is $280 for those with ample financial flexibility, which helps keep programs accessible to others. The Sustainer level is $230 for those who can meet needs with mindful budgeting, helping maintain the work at a steady pace. The Supported level is $180 for those with limited resources or who would not be able to attend without a discount.

Buried New Hampshire with Rick Davidson & Bill Thompson

Rick Davidson and Bill Thompson present Volumes 1 and 2 of Buried New Hampshire, a pair of books that explore the state’s burial places and the stories they hold. Blending careful research, community lore, and reflection, their work offers a fresh look at New Hampshire’s cultural history through the lives of people whose resting places are sometimes overlooked or forgotten. The journey spans the seacoast, the White Mountains, and the Great North Woods, highlighting landscapes that range from park-like city cemeteries to solitary markers deep in the forest. Headstones reveal accounts of courage and sorrow, and while many personal histories have faded, others endure in local memory. Created for Fonthill Media and Alan Sutton Publishing, the authors spent a year tracing legends, following leads, and photographing cemeteries across New Hampshire. They share vivid color images and findings from their research. Familiar names appear alongside figures tied to crime, acts of heroism, and other unusual stories, some tragic and some inspiring, with mysteries that still remain. About the authors: Rick Davidson is a photographer, novelist, and retired teacher who, with his wife Jane, ran Davidson Photography and Video. His teaching experience includes Kingswood Middle School, Kennett High School, Stuttgart University, adult education, and business settings in Germany. He is the author of three thrillers and a New Hampshire history, and he enjoys traveling with his wife, walking with the family dog Huck, time on the Maine coast, snowshoeing, playing guitar, writing, family time, and fly fishing. Bill Thompson and his wife Janet owned the North Country Angler Fly Shop in North Conway. He was a licensed New Hampshire fishing guide and wrote The Valley Angler fishing column for the local paper for 19 years as well as a monthly column for The New Hampshire Outdoor Gazette. His flies have appeared in several books and are still used on local rivers. He enjoys classic cars and trucks, photography, writing, and walks with his dog Willow.

Prevent Identity Theft at Free Shred-a-Thon in Concord

Identity theft affects millions each year, and the losses are staggering. In 2024 alone, 18 million people across the country lost $47 billion, which amounts to a new victim roughly every 1.7 seconds. To support safer habits with personal information, AARP New Hampshire and Service Credit Union are partnering on a free community shred-a-thon in Concord focused on secure document disposal. Attendees can bring sensitive papers such as bank statements, canceled checks, credit card solicitations, and receipts that include identifying details. Please limit drop-offs to three bags or boxes per vehicle. Magazines and newspapers are not accepted. Remove large binder clips and plastic, while staples and paper clips can stay. Shredding takes place on site in a mobile truck, and the event is open to everyone at no cost.

Humanities Event- New England's Colonial Meetinghouses

Discover the story of New England’s colonial meetinghouses in a visual presentation that explores how these buildings, largely funded by local taxes, served as both places of worship and centers for town governance. Illustrated with photographs of a small number of exceptionally well preserved examples, photographer Paul Wainwright traces the communities that built and used them and the influence they have had on American culture. Attendance is free and open to everyone. Onsite parking is available, and light refreshments will follow the presentation. Paul Wainwright brings a unique perspective shaped by a lifelong interest in photography and history, a Ph.D. in physics from Yale, and years at Bell Labs before dedicating himself to photography full time in 2001, with a focus on historic structures captured in a personal, reflective style. New Hampshire Humanities programs receive partial support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and this program is co-hosted with the Pembroke Historical Society and the Friends of the Pembroke Town Library.
