State of Economic Development: Clayton, Where Are We Going?

Clayton is growing, and the choices made now will shape the community for years ahead. The Clayton Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee presents the annual State of Economic Development, a forward-looking program centered on the opportunities, challenges, and strategy guiding the region’s path. This year highlights the future of workforce development and the talent pipeline, healthcare and community well-being, infrastructure and transportation, and overall economic competitiveness that positions Clayton for business recruitment and expansion. The program opens with a keynote from Parker Wyatt, Senior Consultant with Global Location Strategies, offering a national view on site selection, business recruitment, and what communities must do to stay competitive. An expert panel then explores these topics in depth, sharing perspectives on plans, emerging trends, and how organizations are adapting to meet current and future needs. The discussion is moderated by Ben Tobin, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist with the Triangle Business Journal known for coverage of economic development, business growth, and regional trends. After the program, a guided windshield bus tour provides a firsthand look at key development sites, growth corridors, and future opportunities across Clayton. Capacity for the tour is limited to 25 participants. Presented in partnership with the Town of Clayton Economic Development Department. Sponsors include Duke Energy as Series Presenting Sponsor, Partners Commercial Realty, LLC as Presenting Sponsor, and Gold Sponsors Edward Jones - Mike Mullins, Financial Advisor, Portofino Homes & Equestrian Center, and Southeastern Healthcare of NC, Inc.

Pottery Wheel Workshop

Discover the basics of wheel throwing in a small, supportive class that encourages creativity. With only six participants per session, you will receive plenty of hands-on help and personal guidance. Newcomers are welcome, and anyone returning to pottery after a break can ease back in with a relaxed, get-your-hands-in-the-clay experience. Prepare for comfort and safety before you sit at the wheel. Avoid dangling jewelry, flowing sleeves, and flip flops since studio floors can be slippery. Tie back long hair, and keep in mind that very long nails can make throwing more difficult. Wear clothes you do not mind getting a little messy, as clay washes out. Aprons are provided, or you can bring a towel. Open to ages 10 and up. No experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome. An instructor will help select your strongest pieces for kiln firing. After glazing and firing, finished work will be ready for pickup in about two to three weeks. Seats are limited. No-shows and cancellations within 48 hours are forfeited. If you need to reschedule, visit the website and use the Reschedule My Ticket option at the bottom of the page. The route continues onto the NC Mountains to Sea Trail for a spirited stretch with scenic and historic pauses, then circles back to finish at a prohibition-style speakeasy bar where a hand-squeezed fresh margarita is included. Along the way, participants learn about local heroes, the origins of NASCAR, moonshining, native tribes, the Neuse River, milling towns, and take part in alcohol trivia.
