Film & Philosophy: The Congress

Drawn from Stanisław Lem’s 1971 novel The Futurological Congress, The Congress blends live action and animation to examine the future of entertainment, personal identity, and how we perceive reality. Robin Wright portrays a fictional version of herself, an aging performer who, after difficult choices, licenses her digital likeness to the powerful Miramount studio. As the industry shifts into a kaleidoscopic animated dystopia, her journey grows increasingly surreal as the boundaries between the real and the imagined blur. The film opens space for questions about immortality, free will, agency, consciousness, identity, creativity, perception, progress, and the influence of technology on human life. Hosted at Reeder's Alley, this Film and Philosophy program features a screening in a mini theater followed by a community conversation led by Student Scholar Fellow Gavin Payne. Admission is free for all with a suggested $5 donation. Attendees may bring their own snacks and beverages. Camping chairs are welcome, and additional seating will be available.
