I Am Embodied – Inner Nature Series by Clement Waters

Part of the Inner Nature Series by Clement Waters, this guided movement experience centers on grounding, inner awareness, and noticing how motion arises from the body’s own signals. A thoughtfully paced sequence weaves gentle somatic practices with options for expressive, improvisational movement and rhythmic exploration, inviting people to explore how attention, sensation, and action inform one another. The approach supports nervous system settling, strengthens choice-making in how one moves, and fosters trust in the body’s innate capacities. The flow begins with settling and mindful presence, then expands into themed, self-directed pathways so each participant can follow what feels appropriate in the moment. The gathering concludes with a circle reflection to support integration and sustained present-moment awareness beyond the session. Many people leave with a steadier sense of grounding, clearer insight into posture and movement patterns, and increased confidence in listening to internal cues that can ease strain or stress in daily life. The session runs for 75 minutes at a low to moderate intensity. It is low impact and chairs are available. No prior experience is required. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Hard soled shoes stay off the studio floor, and movement happens barefoot or in soft footwear. If you tend to get cold or prefer more coverage, grippy socks or soft-sole dance slippers are optional. Each meeting begins and ends with a palm-warming practice and an open invitation to sing. Participation is always optional. If anything feels like too much at any point, taking a break in the lounge area is welcome.

Shiner and more

An immersive night of shapeshifting rock featuring Shiner and Spotlights, with Lafayette setting the tone. Shiner came together in 1992 after the end of Allen’s earlier band, beginning as Orchid with Clayton Brown and Shawn Sherrill, then becoming Shiner when Tim Dow joined on drums and the group connected with Flower Booking and DeSoto Records run by Kim Coletta and Bill Barbot of Jawbox. With Paul Malinowski on bass, Jason Gerken on drums, and Josh Newton on guitar and textures, the band entered a creative surge and toured heavily, and The Egg drew strong critical praise. Following a series of reunion shows, they regrouped at Earth Analog in 2018, wrote across roughly a year, honed the material to eight songs, and released Schadenfreude to wide acclaim. They followed with Believe You Me and returned to the road. Spotlights delivers a vivid balance of crushing intensity and sweeping atmosphere, leaving space for melodic vocals and expansive sound to shine. The trio features Mario Quintero on guitar, vocals, and keys, Sarah Quintero on bass and vocals, and Chris Enriquez on drums. Their fourth full length, Alchemy for the Dead, delves into themes of mortality with depth and clarity. Local prog math rock band Lafayette opens the night.

I Am Energy – Inner Nature Series by Clement Waters

Part of the Inner Nature Series from Clement Waters, this guided movement session welcomes community members who RSVP to explore vitality and momentum through music, mindful warm-up, and shared reflection. It begins with a gentle, full-body preparation tailored to the needs present that day, building comfort and mobility before transitioning into more dynamic movement. With a curated soundtrack, participants let their bodies respond to the meeting point of music and personal feeling at a pace that suits them. Rest is always welcome, either in the studio or in the adjacent lounge. The session closes in circle, inviting reflections and song suggestions that help shape future playlists and foster collective authorship. A grounding ceremony supports an easeful return to everyday life. Many participants notice renewed energy, greater confidence in responding to their bodies during exertion, and a broadened relationship with music as a guide for movement beyond the studio. The experience lasts 75 minutes and moves at a moderate to high intensity with a guided ramp-up and ramp-down. Chairs are available, rest options are always offered, and exertion is self-paced. No prior experience is needed. Wear comfortable clothing for stretching and energetic movement, with optional layers for rest periods. The studio does not allow hard-sole shoes, so movement takes place barefoot or in soft footwear. Each gathering opens and closes with ceremony, and participation in every element is invitational and optional. Participants may modify movement, pause, rest, or step aside at any time.

The book features striking images by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Dan White, offering an intimate visual record of the ensemble and its partners. Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of Our Future

Daniel Lewis, Dibner Senior Curator of the History of Science and Technology at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in Southern California, presents a far-reaching lecture on the planetary significance of trees. He traces a path from plant-breeding laboratories, botanical gardens, research sites, and museum archives to forest canopies, underwater environments, deserts of the American West, and the jungles of Peru, building a global picture of how trees shape life on Earth. The talk considers what happens when a once-common species vanishes in the wild yet persists in cultivation, how researchers reconstruct lost genomes and habitats, how a tree can hold thousands of gallons of water, preserve insects from millions of years ago, and root in swampy ground while staying upright. It reflects on the lessons offered by trees that survive for five millennia and on how the persistence of one species can affect others. Twelve Trees has been described as a story filled with wonder, gratitude, and measured hope about our world, its past, and its future. A book signing hosted by Rainy Day Books will follow the lecture, and copies of Twelve Trees will be available for purchase. This program takes place in person at the Linda Hall Library, with a virtual viewing option available by registration.

Meghan Miller & Mike Miller | First Friday Opening at LVAC

An opening at LVAC spotlights work by Meghan Miller and Mike Miller in the Main Gallery, shaped around a playful sci fi idea that visitors from beyond might measure humanity by the strength of its art. Mike presents kinetic sculptures that fuse natural forms with human inventions into machine nature hybrids. Pieces move by way of motors, hand cranks, wind or even a swing, and their motions recall rhythms found in the natural world such as plant respiration or an orbit. His practice emphasizes individual responsibility for the environment and imagines a future where technology and nature grow more alike. The theme extends to small ceramic alien deities and a Ceramic Alien Kiosk that winks at the prospect of cosmic evaluation. Meghan builds immersive installations that serve as welcoming third places, offering settings to connect with others, unwind or enjoy quiet time. Her background spans sculpture and painting studies at Wichita State University, experience in education and museum events, vintage fashion work, and a collaborative practice with Hallie Linnebur as Linnebur & Miller. A history of humor, spectacle, costuming and interactive environments informs her current focus on spaces that provide comfort and beauty. The artists’ long running collaboration continues here, with their inflatable piece called the tieflatable included in the presentation.

"Lovely"

A new dark dramedy staged live at The Arts Asylum in Kansas City explores the collision of intimacy, family, and truth. After their adolescent niece unexpectedly witnesses a private moment, Josie and Carter struggle to open an honest conversation about sex while larger family dynamics bubble to the surface. Josie’s father, an erotic novelist, and his bold literary agent wade in with their own viewpoints, blending sharp humor with candid reflection as the characters confront how sexuality and mental health shape their lives. Performances include a pay-what-you-can preview, an opening night, a matinee, an industry night, and additional showings. The cast features Kelsey Linn as Josie, Greg Butell as Lance, Matthew Henrickson as Carter, Julie DeLana as Jane, Sapphire Engel as Celia, Skylar Walton as Ben, and Austin Hodges as Young Lover. The production is written and directed by Brian Duskey, with Hazel Condor as assistant director and Alison Nickel as costume designer. James McMurtry and more

James McMurtry appears with special guest BettySoo, bringing finely etched narratives and unhurried grooves to the forefront. His eleventh album, The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy, is populated by vivid characters, including a Lone Star sheriff who hunts quail on horseback while hiding a second family, a mechanic sprawled among spare parts and weighing whether he can afford to keep his relationship, and a troubled man who sees a black dog and a wandering boy while a Weird Al deep cut loops in his mind. The songs ride on rolling guitars, barroom harmonies, and subtle touches of banjo and harmonica, balancing humor and sorrow in close succession. Many of these stories draw on scraps of personal and family history, from a friend’s poem that seeded South Texas Lawman to echoes of experiences tied to his father, writer Larry McMurtry. The record reunites him with producer Don Dixon and aims for performances that feel immediate and natural. In the studio he worked with his trusted band, with Cornbread on bass, Tim Holt on guitar, Daren Hess on drums, and BettySoo providing harmonies, and it bookends with covers of Jon Dee Graham’s Laredo and Kris Kristofferson’s Broken Freedom Song. Across a long career that continues to reach new listeners, artists such as Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell have cited his songwriting as a formative influence.

Artist Talk: Box and Wax and Things

An artist talk with Marn Jensen delves into Box and Wax and Things, focusing on how worn boxes, wax, and found objects are layered into assemblages that speak to memory, history, and the quiet stories embedded in everyday materials. Jensen will reflect on her fascination with weathered boxes, from their patina and dovetail corners to homemade locks and initials scratched into the wood, and how containers that once held items like coins, handkerchiefs, and pencils can be transformed into artworks that carry their past into new narratives. Her background includes study at the University of Kansas, a long tenure in Hallmark Cards’ Creative Division, the Barbara Marshall Award, and the co-creation of Art of the Wish based on interviews with elders, a project that debuted at the Leedy Voulkos Art Center and is touring nationally through Exhibits USA and MidAmerica Arts Alliance. Caroline Kingsbury, Bershy

Caroline Kingsbury shares the stage with Bershy for an evening of adventurous indie pop shaped by bold ideas and big hooks. A queer artist raised in Florida and now based in Los Angeles, Kingsbury arrives with a daring new EP inspired by the 1981 musical comedy that followed The Rocky Horror Picture Show, reimagining a world where conversion therapy is turned on its head and queer celebration takes center stage. The title track surges with luminous 80s synths and a dancefloor pulse, pairing euphoric pop with incisive social themes and a spirit of release and togetherness. On the road she has amplified messages of pride and community, and that heartbeat carries into the new songs as joy becomes a form of resistance. After a watershed year that brought a late viral lift for Kissing Someone Else and a collaboration with Justin Tranter on Take My Phone Away, her audience and streams jumped 10x. Give Me A Sign crossed a million plays in a month and reached Spotify’s global New Music Friday, and Blurry Now appeared in the Netflix series Forever when it topped the platform. With this momentum, the new EP points to an artist expanding her reach while keeping the focus on cathartic, communal pop.

I Am Still – Inner Nature Series by Clement Waters

Set aside 75 unrushed minutes for a quiet, very gentle experience open to anyone who RSVPs, with an optional suggested donation. The session begins with a settling arrival and soft orientation, then continues with calm seated awareness accompanied by ambient sound, an unhurried walk along a meandering path, and generous intervals of silent mindfulness. The focus is on slowing the pace, sensing breath and bodily cues, and allowing attention to open without urgency. Chairs and cushions are available, the activities are low impact with minimal movement, and you are welcome to sit, stand, or rest at any point. No prior experience is required. Time is held with care so participants can notice subtle shifts in awareness and deepen embodied presence. The experience closes with sharing in a circle and a brief aromatic powder ritual placed in the palm to support integration and return. Many participants report a steadier inner state, more ease with quiet, greater flexibility when the unexpected occurs, and a broader attention that supports daily life. Wear comfortable clothing suited to sitting and slow walking, and consider a warm layer for periods of stillness. Each session opens and ends with a grounding ceremony, and all elements are invitational. Hard-soled shoes are set aside in the studio, with movement taking place barefoot or in soft footwear.

Michael Martin Murphey

Michael Martin Murphey brings a storied career to the stage, with songs that have reached the top of pop, country, western, and bluegrass charts over more than fifty years. Listeners know him for signature hits like Wildfire, Carolina in the Pines, What’s Forever For, Long Line of Love, Geronimo’s Cadillac, and Cowboy Logic, drawn from a catalog spanning 35 albums. A Texas native whose journey ran from the state’s folk scene to Los Angeles, Colorado, and Nashville before returning home, he helped spark Austin’s Cosmic Cowboy era in the early 1970s, a wave that opened doors for the Outlaw Country movement. His early milestones include the debut album Geronimo’s Cadillac, praised by Rolling Stone as the work of a standout new songwriter, and the gold-certified Blue Sky Night Thunder, followed by a string of 1980s country successes that included the Grammy-nominated A Face in the Crowd with Holly Dunn. His songwriting has been embraced by a wide range of artists, among them The Monkees, Kenny Rogers, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Denver, Hoyt Axton, Johnny Cash, Tracy Byrd, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dolly Parton, Johnny Rivers, and Billy Ray Cyrus. He also created symphonic programs honoring the American West, leading to numerous appearances with orchestras in the United States and Canada, including the National Symphony Orchestra. In 1990 he returned to cowboy music with Cowboy Songs Vol. I, a gold-selling release that helped launch the Warner Western imprint, and he founded Westfest to celebrate Western culture. Later projects turned to bluegrass with the Grammy-nominated Buckaroo Blue Grass and follow-up albums that topped bluegrass charts. His honors include multiple gold records, a platinum single for Wildfire, the Charlie Russell Award for Western Heritage, several Wrangler awards from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, recognition from the Academy of Country Music and other organizations, induction into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award from the Western Heritage Awards. Recent work such as Austinology: Alleys of Austin revisits his early Austin roots alongside friends and peers. This event highlights a songwriter who celebrates the land, stories, and spirit of the American West while connecting generations through melody and narrative.

Three TT’s and a Nana – Live Stage Play

Three TT’s and a Nana is a live stage play that blends humor, storytelling, culture, and emotional truth into an evening meant to resonate long after the curtain falls. At its center is a sisterhood that has endured for decades, a bond among women who have lived fully and stood by one another through life’s turns. When someone from the past reappears, buried secrets rise, old emotions return, and their connection is challenged in unexpected ways. Through sharp, relatable exchanges and heartfelt moments, the story considers what happens when the past resurfaces, whether friendships can hold under the weight of truth, and how loyalty, faith, and second chances shape who we become. Starring Emmy Award winner and R&B icon Tony Terry, joined by Darcus Speed Gates, the cast brings emotional depth and authenticity to every scene. Presented at the Kansas City Scottish Rite Temple, a historic landmark known for its grand architecture and classic interiors, the setting complements a narrative grounded in legacy, resilience, and cultural perspective. The production offers laughter and reflection in equal measure, inviting audiences to see pieces of their own lives in a tale of friendship, love, loss, and renewal.

Babes In Canyon

Babes In Canyon brings a vivid blend of moody folk and synth-laced pop, pairing luminous vocals with glints of 80s radio and quick flashes of mandolin. The Washington duo of veteran songwriter Nathan Hamer, a founding member of indie pop outfit Kuinka, and his wife Sophia began creating together during a winter storm in a remote cabin, a spark that grew into their debut full-length, The New Loud. Refined on the road through tours, festivals and live performances, their shows weave looping keys, beats and percussion into an energetic whole. Heavy rhythms, stacked harmonies and buzzing synths ride over a backdrop of strings, and their experimentation embraces unconventional song forms and long-form lyrics that tell a larger story. The New Loud took shape in a 1950s cabin on the Washington coast and later at the duo’s farmhouse studio, with engineering and mixing by Jerry Streeter. The recordings feature additional bass by Michelle Nuño and mastering by Matt Bishop, along with field textures gathered at home, from tractor engines and pond splashes to the ring of metal gates and a chorus of tree frogs.

The Marshall Tucker Band with Special Guest Outlaw Jim & The Whiskey Benders

The Marshall Tucker Band headlines an evening steeped in Southern rock heritage, with a set known to weave together favorites like "Heard It in a Love Song," "Can't You See," "Fire on the Mountain," "Long Hard Ride," and "Ramblin'." Formed in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1972 and named after a blind piano tuner whose name appeared on a key to their first rehearsal space, the group built a far-reaching legacy through more than 20 studio albums, numerous live releases, and a reputation for dynamic performances around the world. Lead vocalist and bandleader Doug Gray continues to carry that legacy with bandmates B.B. Borden on drums, Ryan Ware on bass and vocals, Marcus James Henderson on keys, sax, flute, and vocals, Chris Hicks on guitar and vocals, and Rick Willis on guitar and vocals. Their self-titled 1973 debut on Capricorn Records opens with "Take the Highway," a track that hints at the wide-open spirit and musical range that helped shape Southern rock. Their influence has been praised by peers and followers alike, including Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Johnny Van Zant, and Collective Soul’s Ed Roland, who has noted the connection between "Can’t You See" and his band’s hit "Shine." Special guest Outlaw Jim & The Whiskey Benders bring a hard-charging Outlaw Country sound rooted in the traditions of Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, colored by New Orleans funk and Southern rock. The band has logged miles across the Midwest and South at festivals, concerts, private events, and storied honky-tonks, with appearances that include the Grand Ole Opry Plaza Parties, stages along Nashville’s Lower Broadway, venues in New Orleans, and mountain towns throughout the Rockies. In Kansas City they have shared bills with artists such as David Allan Coe, Billy Joe Shaver, Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin, John Michael Montgomery, Jason Boland and The Stragglers, The Wilders, Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys, Blake Shelton, Josh Gracin, and Carolina Rain, and they have performed at Y’allapalooza. Expect original tunes alongside crowd-ready sing-alongs, delivered with their own distinctive edge.

May Mayhem Juniors(12/16s) Doubles Tournament

The first Junior KC AVP doubles tournament of the year brings juniors beach volleyball into the spotlight, with a focus on growing the game and helping players and parents understand how outdoor play differs from indoor. Competition features 12U and 16U divisions. Eligibility is defined by graduation year, with 16U for athletes graduating in 2028 or later and 12U for athletes graduating in 2032 or later. The tournament runs pool play that leads into single elimination best of three matches, and an upper and lower bracket may be created depending on the number of teams. Division sizes may be adjusted to fit overall registration. Players are welcome to play up in age but cannot play down unless they meet grade eligibility. Coaches must register in order to be on the beach. Prizes include medals plus AVP National bids and points for first and second place, and medals with points for third place. Bids are awarded only when a division has at least five teams and they are not age specific, which means a player who earns a bid in an older division may use it in any eligible division at Nationals except one they have aged out of. Play follows USAV beach rules. Participants must hold at least a Silver AVP membership to compete. The Silver level costs $35, must be completed online before the event, and is valid for 365 days from purchase. For questions, contact Parker Zelei at 636-577-8265 or email midwestbva@outlook.com.

Asleep at the Wheel

Asleep at the Wheel traces its Texas roots to a pivotal 1974 move from the Bay Area to Austin, a choice influenced by a show at Armadillo World Headquarters with Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen and by encouragement from Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm. The band has called Austin home for five decades. Leader and only original member Ray Benson reflects on the journey, sharing that Austin surpassed his hopes and that the group is recognized around the world as a Texas band devoted to Texas and Western Swing, a responsibility they carry with pride. Since 1970 the lineup has evolved constantly, with more than 100 musicians passing through, and new additions have often led to new albums. That pattern continues with a 2025 release following changes after the pandemic and the 50th anniversary tour. The fiddle remains central to the sound, and the newest vocalist and fiddler, Ian Stewart, came aboard after a residency at the Broken Spoke on the recommendation of Danny Levin, an early member who played with the band through the 1970s and early 1980s. Stewart calls it an honor and an education to be part of a team that brings a fresh twist to the traditional music he grew up hearing.

🦆 Duck Derby at The Bay

Bay Water Park in Kansas City hosts a splash-filled Duck Derby with a community vibe, featuring activities and a resource fair that lead up to a lively rubber duck race and a prize raffle. Ducks will float and jostle their way to the finish for prizes, and the event is suitable for all ages. Every duck pack comes with one day admission pass and one raffle ticket per duck, valid only on the day of the race. Packs are registered to a single person and cannot be combined with others. Son Little CityFolk Tour 2026

Son Little brings a performance that sharpens and deepens his songs, raw, expressive, and in constant motion. Whether performing solo or with a full band, he shifts easily from deep-pocket grooves to quiet, close-up moments to passages that feel spontaneous yet land with emotional accuracy. The show rests on the richness of his voice and the strength of his writing. Over the last decade he has forged a sound that threads soul, blues, folk, hip hop, and R&B without settling into a single category, and that blend fills the room with something at once familiar and distinctly his. Listeners are drawn into textured, vulnerable songs delivered with equal parts fire and finesse, turning the set into more than a simple run of tunes. After a stretch in the UK and Europe supporting Larkin Poe, he returns with new music and a fresh run of winter and spring dates. His album CITYFOLK is slated for March 2026, and the recent singles in orbit and be better hint at what lies ahead onstage and beyond.

Zac Harmon in the legendary Gospel Lounge

The Gospel Lounge hosts award-winning guitarist, singer, and songwriter Zac Harmon, an artist whose distinctive sound carries forward the rich tradition of the blues. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, he grew up surrounded by music on and around Farish Street, with a mother who played piano and a father who played harmonica and supported legendary touring artists. Neighbors introduced him to a wider world of artistry and scholarship, shaping a deep musical foundation. By his mid-teens he was performing professionally with Sam Myers, soon working with Dorothy Moore, Z.Z. Hill, and others. After moving to Los Angeles, he built an accomplished studio and songwriting career, serving as a staff writer for ATV Music and penning songs for Troop, Karyn White, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Freddie Jackson, the Whispers, K-Ci & JoJo, and the O’Jays. He also wrote and produced for Black Uhuru on a release that earned a Grammy nomination. Returning to his roots, Harmon introduced acclaimed blues projects such as Live at Babe & Ricky’s Inn and The Blues According to Zacariah, earning the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge title with the Mid South Blues Revue as Best Unsigned Band, an XM listeners’ Best New Blues Artist honor, and a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut. He has entertained U.S. troops overseas and is among the few blues performers to have played at the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx. Subsequent albums include From the Root and Music Is Medicine, followed by Right Man Right Now, Mississippi BarBQ produced by Jim Gaines, and As Long As I Got My Guitar, which received the Soul Blues Album of the Year at the 43rd Blues Music Awards. On stage he weaves soul-blues, gospel, reggae, and modern blues-rock into seamless, high-energy sets led by expressive vocals, incisive guitar, and a seasoned band. An evening with Zac Harmon in the Gospel Lounge highlights Mississippi-rooted storytelling, hard-won craft from years on the road, and a continuing commitment to the power of the blues.

This performance centers on presence and feel, spotlighting Anson Funderburgh, a renowned Texas blues guitarist whose nearly five decades onstage have been devoted to living in the moment. Listeners and fellow musicians around the world know him for a distinctive tone, tasteful touch, and sure-handed sensibility, honed from neighborhood rooms in Texas to clubs and major festivals.
