Chimney Fire: Understanding Chimneys

This hands-on, three-part class at Duluth Folk School brings together a local chimney specialist, fire service professionals, and practical building to clarify what makes a chimney safe and effective. It is geared toward homeowners, builders, home buyers, and DIY enthusiasts who want a clear understanding of the difference between well-built and problematic chimneys. Session one focuses on construction. Participants split into teams to build two chimneys, one following standards and code with strong technique, the other intentionally assembled with numerous code violations while still functioning. During the build, the interior of each flue tile is coated with roofing tar and then left to cure. Session two is dedicated to live burn testing. Both chimneys are ignited under the supervision of local fire department personnel, who use sensing equipment and photography to document the fires as part of a training exercise. A grill-out may accompany the testing. Session three is a full teardown and examination. The chimneys are dismantled, the damage patterns are studied, and the remains are removed. These autopsies reveal how construction choices influence performance and safety. Note-taking and photography are welcome throughout.

Storytime

A special storytime for grandparents, parents, and little ones features children’s author Mary Casanova and illustrator Jordan Sundberg as they share their picture book Northwoods Lullaby from the University of Minnesota Press. They will read aloud, demonstrate and discuss the collage techniques used in the artwork, and take questions from the audience. The gathering welcomes budding young artists, nature enthusiasts, and adults interested in encouraging time away from screens. Inspired by a lullaby Mary wrote for her newborn grandson, Northwoods Lullaby blends musical language with warm, light filled illustrations to celebrate spring, summer, and the wonder of new life. The story follows a child and a grown up on an evening walk through the Northwoods as wildlife appears all around… loons glide across a quiet lake with a baby riding on papa’s back, nearby swans hatch and deer graze, bear cubs climb with their mother, foxes and hares pass by, and wolf pups play at their den. Mary Casanova is the author of many books for young readers, including Hush Hush, Forest and Wake Up, Island, also from the University of Minnesota Press. She lives with her husband in a small cabin near Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. Jordan Sundberg is an artist and illustrator based in Duluth, Minnesota, coauthor and illustrator of Fables of the North Shore, and she lives with her husband, two daughters, and two bunnies.

It outlines a framework for healing after trauma and explores how deep wounds can guide us toward purpose, meaning, and connection. Palmer shares openly about family challenges, professional setbacks, depression, and the continuing practice of forgiving herself and others, emphasizing that recovery is not a straight line but a cycle that returns and evolves. Palmer holds a PhD and DNP from the University of San Diego and a BS from the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota. Author & Artist Gabe Montesanti

Author and artist Gabe Montesanti visits Zenith Bookstore to present and discuss her new memoir, Drag Thing: A Memoir of Mania and Mirrors, with snacks and refreshments available and a signing to follow. The book reflects on an immersion in St. Louis drag, beginning with performances as Fender Bender, a drag king, and evolving into a presence that resists labels. Through humor, parody, and candid self-examination, Montesanti navigates gender and identity, learns techniques like binding along with creating facial hair and contouring, and crafts inventive costumes on a shoestring budget. As ambitions onstage grow and distance from family deepens, she also grapples with a form of bipolar disorder that proves difficult to treat, and the line between performance and rapid cycling mania starts to blur. Montesanti (she/they) is a queer writer and artist based in St. Louis, author of Brace for Impact: A Memoir, and has also worked as an educator and competed in swimming, in addition to performing in drag. She was raised in a working-class Midwestern community.

Whiskey River

From the early 1970s through the mid 1980s, Whiskey River drew loyal, foot stomping crowds, filling clubs, ballrooms, and other venues with high energy country rock. Alongside regional peers like Daisy Dillman, the band helped shape a distinctly Midwestern strain of hard driving country rock that continues to resonate. Packed nights at the Cabooze in Minneapolis and Grandma's in Duluth were hallmarks of the era, and the group toured nonstop across 19 states and three Canadian provinces, including appearances at the Palomino Club in Los Angeles and City Limits in New York City. Saltydog & Lanue

Saltydog and Lanue come together on the Sacred Heart altar stage for a one-time concert. Saltydog, a Duluth jam outfit, blends funk, open-ended improvisation, and playfully crafted, folk-rooted songs, drawing on influences that include The Talking Heads, The Band, classic country, and jam band favorites. The group began along Duluth’s icy shoreline with brothers Jacob and Owen Mahon, and now features Calvin "Calzone" Lund, Lefty Johnson, Gavin St. Clair, and Sam Deters. Their third album, Runnin’ Again, was released earlier this year. Lanue was founded in Duluth by singer-songwriter Sarah Krueger, who released a self-titled debut in 2021. Her writing is direct and heartfelt, with vocals that rest like honey over warm layers of synths, guitars, and percussion. The songs move from confessional to nostalgic, lifted by lush textures while staying rooted in the folk tradition. Krueger is now based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and continues to develop the Lanue sound. Advance e-tickets are available for 15 dollars plus a 2.85 dollar fee on Eventbrite. Paper tickets are 15 dollars at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth plus a 1 dollar handling fee, and at Globe News in Superior for cash only. Tickets at the door are 20 dollars while supplies last.
