Artist Talk with Alex Constantine

Textile artist Alex Constantine leads an interactive demonstration on creating fabric patches at the Jan Johansen Gallery of Rumriver Art Center in Anoka, Minnesota. Connected to the exhibition Washed Up, the program follows a path from the sea’s raw beauty to the environmental costs of global fashion. Through weaving, quilting, block printing, and embroidery, Constantine reshapes stubborn discarded materials into works that challenge consumer waste. Materials include abandoned fishing line, polypropylene rope heavy with sand, and other persistent synthetics, with some components recovered as rope weathered by the Mississippi River. In the studio these finds are patiently untangled, washed, dried in sunlight, and rewoven, highlighting the physical effort involved in responding to the impacts of fast fashion. The demonstration focuses on techniques for making fabric patches and offers a close look at how reclaimed fibers are transformed. This event is free and open to the public. Paddle with a Park Ranger

Set within the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, which safeguards 72 miles of the Mississippi and its natural, cultural, and historical heritage, this paddle covers a relaxed three mile stretch of river in Anoka County. National Park Service rangers lead the way, sharing stories that highlight the landscape’s beauty, its cultural meanings, and the deep history that makes this segment unique. Shifting sandbars and open prairie frame conversations about the homelands and ongoing presence of Dakota and Ho-Chunk peoples. The journey also explores how lives have taken shape along these banks from the era of early traders to today’s residents of Ramsey, revealing the Mississippi as a moving connector across generations that continues to shape the nation’s past, present, and future. This free program is made possible by the National Park Service and Mississippi Parks Connection. Registration opens two weeks in advance, first for Ramsey residents and then for non-residents. It is not recommended for beginners. Participants should have paddling experience, be comfortable spending time on a moving river, or be intermediate to advanced paddlers interested in the social experience of traveling with a park ranger. Youth under 18 may take part when paired in a canoe or tandem kayak with an adult from their household. All participants must be able to maneuver a kayak or steer a canoe from the back. Activities proceed in most weather, and participants should be prepared for conditions. Cancellations may occur for lightning, excessive heat, sustained winds above 20 miles per hour, heavy rain, insufficient staffing, unhealthy air quality, or high water levels.

SIDE TWO in concert

SIDE TWO stitches together grunge, alternative, classic rock, dance, pop, country, metal, and Britpop into a high-energy show that feels both familiar and full of surprises. One moment the room is shouting along to Alive, Man in the Box, or Monkey Wrench, then it pivots into the bright pulse of Dancing in the Dark, I Ran, or Hungry Like the Wolf. The momentum continues with 90s favorites such as Mr. Brightside, The Middle, Hey Jealousy, and What I Got, then swings to perennial sing-alongs like American Girl, Sweet Caroline, Born to Be Wild, and Sharp Dressed Man. Contrast drives the experience. The weight of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Tool meets pop sparkle in Straight Up, Time After Time, and Stacy's Mom. Classic rock pillars like Rocket Man, Surrender, and All Right Now share the set with punk and alt bursts like Song 2, Come Out and Play, and Sabotage. Country even takes a turn with Ring of Fire, On the Road Again, and Country Roads. It plays like flipping over a well-loved tape, mixing deeper picks, unabashed crowd-pleasers, and sing-alongs you might have forgotten. The pace stays purposeful and the vibe stays lively, and by the end there is always a call for one more song.
