The Knoll Lecture in Design: Nifemi Marcus-Bello

Cranbrook Academy of Art hosts the Knoll Lecture in Design with Nifemi Marcus-Bello at deSalle Auditorium. Titled Material Affirmations, the talk explores materials as expressions of care, agency, and transformation, and considers how they shape meaning, memory, and identity. Through an iterative, inquiry-led approach, it treats making as a dialogue that values tactility, embraces imperfection, and centers embodied knowledge to encourage more attentive, ethical, and materially engaged ways of creating. Launched in 2004 by Knoll, the residential furnishings company founded by Cranbrook Academy of Art graduate Florence Schust and Hans Knoll, the Knoll Lecture in Design brings leading designers and thinkers to the Cranbrook campus each year to discuss their practice and work with the Academy’s emerging design leaders. Previous speakers include Steven Haulenbeek, Aldo Bakker, Martino Gamper, Bertjan Pot, Lindsey Adelman, Stefano Caggiano, and others.

Grown-Up Game Night

Tabletop board game fans can gather at Troy Public Library for an adults-only game night that is part of the library’s new monthly board game club. Casual Euchre

Casual Euchre at Johnny Blacks Public House offers relaxed, flexible play for all skill levels. There is no entry fee, and enjoying dinner during the event adds a 10‑point bonus to your score. Top performers each week receive a prize, and a grand prize is awarded to the monthly champion. Arrivals and departures are up to you. Many participants eat first, others drop in later, and you can leave whenever you wish. Most sessions include about six to eight games, with no requirement to attend every week or stay the entire time. If you are new to the game, tutorial videos and the Trickster Cards app are suggested for practice and to help when there is an odd number of players. USYS National League Conference I.D. Sessions 2026 (2010-2012)

Farmington Soccer Club is opening registration for National League Conference I.D. sessions created for elite players born in 2010, 2011, or 2012 who want a more personalized, player centered path beyond the mega club model. Each participant is expected to bring a dish to share that incorporates the featured spice, along with a serving utensil. Native Garden Maintenance

Take part in a monthly volunteer session caring for native plantings and rain gardens at the CRWC office. With three rain gardens and two native plant gardens on site, there is plenty to do and plenty to learn. Volunteers can build skills in plant identification, discover how rain gardens capture stormwater, and explore how native species support water quality and wildlife. Typical tasks may include weeding, dividing plants, removing spent stems, planting, mulching, watering, and edging. All gloves and tools are supplied. Master Gardener volunteer hours are available. Additional dates are scheduled.

Gene & Gilda

Tipping Point Theatre presents the Michigan premiere of a Cary Gitter comedy that delves into the relationship between Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner. Set in late 1980s Hollywood, Gene gives his first interview after Gilda’s passing and declares her off limits, until Gilda unexpectedly barges in and changes the course of the conversation. The play retraces their journey from their first meeting through professional milestones and personal challenges, arriving at a heartfelt farewell. It offers a warm portrait of two celebrated comedians in love, revealing the people behind the punchlines. The performance runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

World Dance Day Celebration

A community showcase honoring International Dance Day, organized by the Cultural Committee and taking place at the Senior Center, spotlights performances by local dance troupes. The celebration features a lively mix of German, swing, Greek, In Movement Ballroom, and Polynesian dance that reflects the community’s range of styles. This is the first year of the celebration at the center, and all ages are welcome. Admission is free, and contributions to the Cultural Committee are appreciated to help sustain future programs. Established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of ITI to coincide with the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a key figure in the development of modern ballet, International Dance Day recognizes dance as a universal language that connects people across political, cultural, and ethnic lines.

Club Art Start creates a friendly, screen-free space where school-age children beginning at age 5 explore drawing, painting, and mixed media. Each session is a drop-off format and stands on its own, so families can choose the dates that fit their schedules. A fresh project is introduced every week. Guided by Sasha, a certified and experienced art teacher, young artists learn about color, value, and composition while creating landscapes, still lifes, nature-inspired pieces, and imaginative works. Every class concludes with a brief artist talk that encourages sharing, builds art vocabulary, and strengthens confidence while connecting with peers. Admission includes complimentary valet service and a buffet with Chicken Piccata, vegetarian pasta, broccoli, roasted red skin potatoes, house salad, fresh rolls with butter, and cookies and brownies. Blessings in a Backpack Royal Oak is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works with school staff and volunteers to deliver nonperishable weekend food to students who rely on school meals during the week. A contribution of $185 can supply one Royal Oak student with weekend food for a 38 week school year, supporting better focus and readiness to learn.

Explore a temporary exhibit featuring six exhibit panels from the Oakland County Underground Railroad Project. The project is led by The Birmingham Museum in partnership with the Oakland County Historical Commission, with partial support from Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts. A mix and match game will reinforce the facts learned.

Young children can explore soccer in a welcoming, public Soccer Stars session at Oakland Fieldhouse in Rochester Hills. Designed for ages 3 to 6, these playful classes emphasize confidence while building agility, balance, and control. The format is non-competitive and focused on learning through fun activities. Enjoy a lively music and movement session with Miss Taylor at the Walled Lake Library, created for families to share together. Michigan MUFON 2026 Swamp Gas UFO Conference

Michigan MUFON presents the Swamp Gas UFO Conference at the Kilgour Scottish Centre, marking six decades since the 1966 Michigan UFO wave. The program features Michigan-related UFO topics delivered by three speakers. Jack Bushong, a former National Weather Service radar operator, shares a professional perspective, experiencer Nicolle Lynn speaks from a firsthand point of view, and researcher Raymond Szymanski discusses his work. The day begins with check-in and time to browse vendor tables, moves into the speaker sessions, and concludes with additional vendor browsing.

Enjoy a Mother’s Day themed flower arranging social centered on rest, friends, and free time. Settle into a relaxed, welcoming setting to recharge, spend time with friends, or arrive solo and meet new people. CRAFT BAR- WALK IN DIY!

Walk in to the Craft Bar at AR Workshop Rochester for a DIY crafting session. Choose from ready-to-make projects for adults and kids ages 6 and up, with staff available for questions and guidance. Featured options include candle pouring, trucker hats, wood signs, canvas items, and more. No registration is required. Come during open hours and head to the Craft Bar to get started. Seating is first come, first served, and space may be limited if other workshops are taking place. Groups of five or more are asked to call ahead at (248) 949-9626. Anyone seated within the workshop space who is not participating in a project may be subject to a seating fee.

Little Acorns for Ages: 2-4

Created for children ages 2 to 4, this nature program encourages little ones to discover the sights and sounds of the outdoors through hands-on activities. Activities are held outside, except during inclement weather. Strollers or sleds that can handle a wood chipped trail are welcome. A participating adult attends at no cost and must remain with the child for the entire program. The fee is $4 for TNS members and $6 for nonmembers.

Mother’s Day Pampering Event

A customizable pampering experience is available for $125. Attendees can build their visit by selecting any two services from a manicure or gel polish manicure, a pedicure, a custom facial, a blowout with styling, or reflexology. The package also includes a complimentary chair massage and a soothing paraffin wax treatment. TEMPORARY EXHIBIT: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN OAKLAND COUNTY

Experience a temporary exhibit of six panels that illuminate The Oakland County Underground Railroad Project, a collaborative public history effort to research and share evidence-based stories from the local Underground Railroad. The initiative was led by The Birmingham Museum and the Oakland County Historical Commission, with partial funding from Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts. Admission is free for all.

Museum Public Drop-In Hours & Tours

Explore the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm during public drop-in hours and tours. Admission includes a self-paced, interactive journey through local history. Learn about the Taylor-Van Hoosen families, view Mastodon bones, and watch a range of community videos, from the area’s ski jump to an award-winning PBS film, along with many computer interactives. A guided visit to the Van Hoosen Farmhouse begins at the Dairy Barn, and visitors are welcome to take self-guided time in the Bull Barn, Milk House, Equipment Barn, and Children’s Garden, as well as the nearby Stoney Creek Cemetery and 16 acres of gardens and grounds. Run by the same organizers who connect people through Euchre, this Saturday pickleball session offers a friendly way to play for everyone. It is peak indoor season and interest is strong, with all 24 spots filling the day tickets opened last week. Players of every experience level share the courts at the same time, so pairs with different abilities can still participate together. A Teams & Scores style system, familiar to many Euchre players, matches you with others near your level while rotating partners and courts for variety. Getting started is simple once you arrive. There is a fee for pickleball. Text "P" to be added to the lineup. A monitor shows court assignments and positions, so phones can stay off the court, and scores are reported by text. Wins and losses update dynamic ratings to keep competition balanced. Lessons for newcomers are available the same day. The organizers are also exploring additional venues to make room for more players, aiming for competitive games, variety, and a welcoming social environment.

Cacao & Sound Journey

Alicia Clark guides a heart-opening cacao ceremony paired with a restorative sound journey. Participants slow down and explore current energetic themes and how they may influence everyday life. A warm cup of ceremonial cacao sets the tone, followed by gentle movement to awaken the heart, a guided meditation with Reiki, and individualized sound work intended to clear the energy field and support alignment with one’s highest good. Tones and vibration are woven throughout to help integrate cacao’s supportive qualities through body, mind, and spirit, with community connection enhancing the experience. The ceremony features Keith’s cacao made from 100 percent pure ceremonial-grade beans, honored as a sacred plant ally that can encourage gentle healing while inviting creativity, joy, and clarity. Big West Events transforms Larsa Banquet Hall into a pink themed celebration that blends high energy music with standout cuisine. DJ Ray Oshay teams up with Detroit’s Big West on the turntables to keep the crowd moving while the room takes on a full pink aesthetic. At the Detroit Zoo, Metro Detroit Great Strides brings the community together for an annual walk supporting the fight against cystic fibrosis. Competitive bags in a switch format take place at Fountain Walk in Novi on Mondays, and plans are dependent on the weather. It is a bring-your-own-bags tournament, with corn-filled bags not allowed, and spare sets will be on hand if needed. Explore kinusaiga at Avocato Catfé and Adoption Center, a calming workshop where participants create a fabric artwork by layering colorful materials into a pre-designed pattern with no sewing required. All supplies are provided, it is beginner friendly, and there are multiple patterns to choose from. Expect to leave with a finished piece ready to display, and enjoy the cozy company of the cats, who might even curl up nearby while you work. The class fee is $30 and the Catfé entry fee is $15, which supports the care of the cats, for a total cost of $45. Swanson Lecture: Joseph Kunkel

At deSalle Auditorium, Cranbrook Academy of Art presents the Swanson Lecture with community designer and educator Joseph Kunkel, a citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Nation whose work centers on sustainable development in Indigenous communities. His talk considers Land Back not simply as a matter of ownership or property but as a living set of relationships with place, grounded in stewardship, responsibility, and reciprocity. Through project examples, he will explore how architecture, planning, and design can reconnect the built environment to these relationships, moving beyond conventional development toward cultural continuity, ecological care, and resilient communities. Kunkel is based in Santa Fe and is a Principal at MASS Design Group, where he leads the Sustainable Native Communities Design Lab. His practice spans affordable housing, healthcare facilities, and essential community infrastructure in Indigenous contexts. He is a former Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow and has been recognized with the Obama Fellowship (2019), the inaugural Elaine Johnson Coates Award from the University of Maryland (2021), the Rubinger Community Fellowship from LISC (2022), and selection to the Aspen Institute’s Civil Society Fellowship as part of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Established in 1983 by the family of architect J. Robert F. Swanson, the J. Robert F. Swanson Lecture Fund brings to the Cranbrook campus architects, designers, artists, and scholars with widely recognized and sustained achievement. Swanson and his wife and design partner, Pipsan Saarinen Swanson, founded Swanson Associates in 1947, contributing to a broad range of interior and exterior projects including residences, schools, universities, churches, airports, banks, and government, industrial, and commercial work.

At Copper Hop Brewing Company, a hands-on cookie decorating class with a Taco Tuesday theme welcomes beginners. Participants practice with four icing colors and techniques such as wet on wet, dimensional piping, and flooding while working through six different designs. All supplies are provided, and bringing an apron is optional. Instruction is guided step by step so it is easy to follow. Everyone attending needs a ticket, and observers are not permitted. The experience is intended for ages 7 and up. Doors open shortly before the start and the session begins promptly. The price is $60 per person. Drinks are available for purchase from Copper Hop Brewing Company, outside beverages are not allowed, and the ticket price does not include drinks. Attendees take home a cookie dough recipe, a royal icing recipe, their decorated cookies, and any extra icing, all boxed for the trip home. Come and celebrate the Class of 2026 high school seniors from metro Detroit who have decided to enlist in the United States Armed Forces. This is the only Our Community Salutes (OCS) ceremony in Michigan! The evening is dedicated to these young men and women and their families, acknowledging their commitment to serve the nation. The event offers an opportunity for the community to express gratitude, offer support, and celebrate their transition into military service. The event includes a formal program featuring distinguished speakers, the Oath of Enlistment, and a tribute to future service members. There will also be a resource fair and reception where enlistees, family members, military personnel, recruiters, and community supporters can connect with military organizations, veteran groups, and service-related resources. Coast Guard Cmdr. Brett McCall, deputy commander of Sector Detroit, will be the featured speaker. No experience is required, and each finished artwork is ready to display at home. The class welcomes all ages. The craft fee is $35 per person and includes all materials and step-by-step guidance. Chunky Knit Blanket Workshop

At AR Workshop Rochester, participants learn hand knitting techniques to create a super cozy, one-of-a-kind chunky chenille blanket. Step-by-step instruction is provided, and the project requires no needles or prior knitting experience. The standard blanket uses 5 skeins of chunky chenille yarn and generally measures about 40 by 50 inches, with the final size varying based on each person's hand knitting process. This is an advanced project and is intended for ages 15 and up. Make one for yourself or create a thoughtful gift.

Garden Swap!

Swap and share the bounty of your garden at a friendly exchange focused on plants and gardening supplies. Bring divided perennials, extra seedlings like tomatoes, surplus seeds, gardening books, tools, or healthy cuttings to place out for others. Participants set out what they are happy to share and pick up useful items to take home, helping unused treasures find new homes while growing both gardens and community. If the weather cooperates, the swap will be set up in the garden area along the south side of the building. In case of bad weather, everything will move indoors. Plan to bring the items you wish to share, plus helpful extras such as a chair, sun protection, water, boxes for carrying your finds, and a blanket or table for displaying your goodies. Snacks are welcome, and snacks and refreshments will be available. Bringing personal food is fine, and sharing is optional. Please leave invasive or diseased plants at home. For guidance on what to avoid, consult the State of Michigan invasive plant resources. Dogs are loved, but pets should stay home for this event. The garden area is served by a newly paved drive with a limited number of paved parking spaces. Restrooms are inside the building along a short, step-free, paved route. Gardeners of every experience level are welcome, and there will be upcoming gardening classes and weekly garden gatherings for those seeking more learning or community.

TEMPORARY EXHIBIT: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN OAKLAND COUNTY

This temporary exhibit explores the Underground Railroad in Oakland County through six interpretive panels created for the Oakland County Underground Railroad Project. The collaborative public history initiative investigates and shares well-documented local history related to the Underground Railroad. It is led by The Birmingham Museum and Oakland County Historical Commission, with partial support from Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts. Admission is free for all.

TEMPORARY EXHIBIT: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN OAKLAND COUNTY

Discover a temporary exhibit featuring six panels drawn from the Oakland County Underground Railroad Project, a multi-community public history effort dedicated to researching and sharing documented local Underground Railroad history. Guided by The Birmingham Museum and the Oakland County Historical Commission, the project received partial support from Michigan Humanities, which is affiliated with the National Endowment for the Arts. Admission is free for everyone.

All Levels Pickleball and Lessons (Northville)

Play and learn at Northville Pickleball Club in a session that welcomes every level, from first-time players to advanced competitors. All participants share the courts at the same time, and mixed-skill partners can take part together. Court assignments run through a Teams & Scores system borrowed from the organizer’s Euchre events, matching players with others near their level while rotating partners to keep the action fresh. Check-in is streamlined with a quick text upon arrival, then an on-site monitor shows where to go so phones can stay off the court. Scores are submitted by text between games, and results feed into automatically updated ratings to help maintain balanced matchups. Lessons for newcomers are available the same day. Indoor demand is high, and recent sessions filled all 24 spots shortly after registration opened. A participation fee applies. The organizers are working to add more locations and are open to connections with facilities that could benefit from this system. Puppy Yoga with Kids

An all-levels yoga class at Shores Yoga Studio supports I Heart Dogs Rescue and Animal Haven. Give your tween or young teen a chance to explore art in a welcoming, one-hour class for ages 10 to 14. Led by educator and artist Sasha, each session is shaped around the group’s interests and skill levels, starting with essential drawing and painting techniques and expanding into additional media. After building a foundation, students develop their own ideas and projects, experimenting with mixed media along with nonobjective, abstract, and representational styles. Anime, manga, and cartooning are not part of the curriculum. No previous experience is needed, all materials are included, and participants need only bring curiosity and creativity.

Cuddle Sanctuary

Cuddle Sanctuary offers a welcoming space for connection, relaxation, and empowerment through consensual, platonic touch. It is designed as a collective healing experience that supports the human need for nonsexual, nonromantic touch and helps build a culture where consent-based contact is both accessible and abundant. The gathering begins with an opening circle that reviews community agreements, explores personal cuddle preferences, and practices consent skills such as making clear requests, setting limits, and receiving a no with care. Attendance at this opening circle is required to take part in cuddling. Afterward, participants may engage in platonic cuddling in the ways that feel good to them, whether that looks like holding hands, spooning, leaning back to back, resting a head on a belly, touching palms, or intertwining arms. Everyone is fully at choice at all times, including the right to change their mind. The experience emphasizes self care and community care, with gentle touch known to support relaxation and ease stress through the body’s own chemistry. A brief closing circle near the end provides time to share reflections and intentions for a future visit. The facilitator is Juno Aventurine (they/them), a workshop organizer focused on consent, connection, and conflict skills, and a former professional cuddler trained to offer therapeutic, platonic cuddle sessions. Tickets are $15.00 for those who can pay, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Registration through the CenterPeace Healing website is required to attend. Masks are welcome but not required, and participants are asked to stay home if they might be ill. Monday's at Fountain Walk

At Fountain Walk in Novi, players can take part in switch play alongside a bring-your-own-partner bags tournament. Participation is weather dependent, with day-of updates shared on the event page. The entry fee is $20 per person and includes at least six games, beginning with four rounders and continuing into a double-elimination tournament. Corn bags are not allowed. Teams should bring their own partner and bags, and loaner bags will be available if needed.

Northville Memorial Day Parade

This Memorial Day procession honors and remembers members of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service. The parade begins in Downtown Northville, pauses briefly at Oakwood Cemetery, and concludes at Rural Hill Cemetery. Afterward, a short ceremony at Rural Hill Cemetery is organized by the Northville VFW and American Legion.
