Grainne Hunt

A queer folk duo spanning two continents takes the spotlight as Irish singer songwriter Gráinne Hunt joins San Diego artist Jules Stewart for a performance of close harmonies and story-rich songs, a blend often likened to The Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile. Her path has included sharing bills with Glen Hansard and U2, along with opening dates for Gladys Knight and Mary Black. Stewart, an accomplished drummer and vocalist with more than 25 years of experience, has performed with Gráinne Hunt, Lindsay White, and Please Ask for Paul. She is recognized for precision paired with musical sensitivity and has been profiled by DRUM! magazine in its New Blood column, the San Diego Troubadour, and The Up and Coming Drummer Podcast. FAST Lecture | Excavating Ancient Humayma, Past and Present

Explore decades of archaeological research at Humayma in southern Jordan, a roughly one-square-kilometer site that has revealed a Nabataean village, an early Roman fort in Arabia, and multiple churches and mosques. The talk examines what years of work have uncovered about this desert community while also addressing open questions about everyday life, burial traditions, and urban industry in a peripheral, arid landscape. It will draw on about 30 years of excavations led by John Oleson and M. Barbara Reeves, and share updates from the recently renewed project directed by Craig Harvey (PhD, University of Michigan), Sarah Wenner, and Amanda Hardman. The speaker, Sarah Wenner, Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Cincinnati, is jointly appointed as an assistant professor of archaeology at the American Center of Research in Amman and as a provenance researcher and object historian at the Cincinnati Art Museum. With more than a decade of field experience in Jordan, she serves as associate director of the Humayma Excavation Project and assistant director of the Petra Garden and Pool Project. Her current projects include editing an exhibition catalogue on ancient queenship across the eastern Mediterranean and West Asia in the 1st millennium BCE and completing the final report for the Roman Street Project. Her research focuses on how Roman cities were shaped through the reuse of urban waste. FAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public. This event takes place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments will be available before the talk, and the lecture follows. His long career began early and includes reaching the UK charts in 1979 despite being a blues band during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era, a cease and desist from Walt Disney Corp over a band name, opening for the Yardbirds, the Animals, Wishbone Ash, and Nine Below Zero, and performances at venues such as London’s Marquee and The Ark. Since her self-titled debut in 2002, she has released a steady stream of celebrated albums, EPs, and singles that highlight evocative lyrics, a compelling voice, and a quietly magnetic stage presence. Participants are asked to bring one or two non-serrated culinary knives from home, prioritizing a 6 to 8 inch chef or santoku and also a paring, utility, or other straight edge. Class pace will determine whether a second blade is sharpened. Limited practice knives may be available, and German steel is preferred over Asian high carbon to simplify learning. Mark Erelli

Boston-based singer and songwriter Mark Erelli, long respected in folk and roots music, has built a career on candid lyrics, meticulous craft, and warmth. His early breakthrough came with the Kerrville New Folk Award in 1999 following his debut, placing him alongside past recipients such as Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith. In recent years he wrote the anti gun violence song "By Degrees," recorded with Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, and others, which earned a Song of the Year nomination at the 2019 Americana Honors and Awards. He followed with two albums compared to the work of Tom Petty and John Prine, praised for their energy, grace, and resilience. His fourteenth solo album, Spring Green, presents a focused and deeply felt collection that reflects on vulnerability, endurance, and renewal. Coming after 2023’s Lay Your Darkness Down, which chronicled his response to vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, Spring Green was co-produced with longtime collaborator Zachariah Hickman and recorded mostly live in three days, giving it a natural and unforced character. Its intimate approach recalls classic artists like Jackson Browne and James Taylor and emphasizes storytelling and emotional clarity over showmanship. Released independently through Bandcamp with orders fulfilled by Erelli himself, Spring Green highlights his dedication to genuine connection beyond industry convention. The album stands as both a clear artistic statement and a reminder that strength can be found in softness and in being wholly oneself.

Live selections from Hidden, a musical by David and Jenny Heitler-Klevans rooted in the true story of Ruth Kapp Hartz, will be performed. The songs trace her concealment across Southern France during World War II, moving from a secluded apartment to an underground refuge and finally to a Catholic orphanage within a convent, as she hides her identity to survive a series of dangerous moments. The performers will conclude with a brief Q&A.

Come visit Ann Arbor's Annual Cat Show!

Ann Arbor’s annual cat show fills the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College with feline excitement, showcasing as many as 35 different breeds in a family-friendly setting for all ages. Watch cats and kittens compete in six separate judging rings as each judge runs a continuous mini show and evaluates every entry, with no single overall champion named. Children can pick up free cat-themed coloring books while supplies last for the first 50 kids. Shoppers will find cat-focused merchandise along with other goods. Tickets are sold at the door for cash, with admission priced at $10 for adults, $8 for students and children, free for children under 6, and $25 for families. Some cats may be petted with the owner’s permission, and guests are asked to sanitize between cats. Certain exhibitors may have kittens or adult cats available for sale, indicated by signs, and any kitten in the show hall must be at least four months old. Personal pets are not allowed unless they are pre-registered participants. Photography is welcome, and visitors should ask before using a flash or a camera that makes noise. A concessions stand is available for lunch. To see as much as possible, plan to arrive with enough time to explore, and feel free to ask exhibitors questions. Some judges share insights while they work, so find a ring you enjoy and settle in to watch the action.

AUDITIONS for PTD Production's "Southern Rapture"

PTD Productions is holding auditions for the summer production Southern Rapture by Eric Coble, directed by Karrie Waarala. Prospective cast members will read selections from the script. An online form is available to complete beforehand, and paper forms will be provided on site. Callbacks may be scheduled if needed. Southern Rapture is inspired by real events. Set in 1996, it follows a Southern theater company that has secured the rights to stage the epic Rapture In America. With opening night only days away, controversy over gay themes, strong language, and a brief moment of male nudity sparks citywide turmoil. The clash draws in the press, the church, government officials, artists, the legal system, the playwright, and the police, along with a one winged angel carrying pepper spray, and after a chaotic live television interview the entire country is watching to see whether the curtain will rise. Content advisory: strong language and brief, non sexual male nudity, plus a short sequence of unarmed stage combat. Character descriptions are available on the company website. Performances are planned at Riverside Arts Center. The production is presented by special arrangement with The Gersh Agency.

Davina and the Vagabonds

Davina and the Vagabonds bring a lively mix of Americana and neo-soul that outlets like Rolling Stone and DownBeat have praised for its spirit and style. Led by vocalist and songwriter Davina Sowers, the group is known for electric performances, top-tier musicianship, a smart, polished look, and an undeniable command of the stage. Their sound draws on a wide palette, reaching from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. Sowers’ story begins in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where an elderly stepfather introduced her to treasures on an Edison phonograph, including The Ink Spots, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She also absorbed her folk singer mother’s records, spinning Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Simon and Garfunkel. Music became her enduring focus. After overcoming addiction and homelessness, she got clean, formed the band in 2004, and committed herself fully to the work ahead. Since then, the group has taken their show far and wide, with performances in 45 states, 12 European countries, and two Canadian provinces. Along the way, they have earned recognition from the Chicago Tribune and NPR, appeared on the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland, and performed on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground. Evening Light: Mozart's Vespers and Choral Twilight Reflections

Bathe in the hues of dusk with a choral program that embraces the serenity and anticipation of a spring evening. Presented at the historic Pease Auditorium at Eastern Michigan University, the performance centers on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, a cornerstone of sacred choral repertoire that balances exuberant praise with contemplation. The program includes Laudate Dominum, where an elegant soprano melody rises above the choir. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music adds a complementary glow, setting lines from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and celebrating music’s power to move the spirit. First conceived for sixteen solo voices, its luminous harmonies and expressive solo moments offer a graceful counterpoint to Mozart’s radiant writing. Featured collaborators include organist Dr. Sarah Simko, with additional voices from the Eastern Michigan University Choir and the Plymouth Canton Educational Park Choirs. Student musicians appear alongside professional and educator artists, underscoring a commitment to mentorship, community connection, and shared artistry in a high-level choral setting. In the resonant embrace of the hall, the evening’s arc moves from sacred brilliance to reflective lyricism, inviting a sense of warmth, wonder, and quiet joy.

Darrell Scott

Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Darrell Scott shapes everyday experiences into songs that feel vivid, heartfelt, and truthful. His lyrics consider what truly matters, what is on the line, and how we find our place, circling back to the notion that love is central even when we do not get it exactly right. He grew up in a musical home, was drawn to the guitar by age four through his father’s influence, and watched a brother pursue the Jerry Reed style. Studies in literature and poetry at Tufts University deepened his craft, and music has remained his constant path. Highlights of his career include touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band for two years apiece, producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark, and receiving songwriter of the year honors from both ASCAP and NSAI. Away from the stage he spends time on his Tennessee land hiking by a small river, cooking with ingredients he raises, and leading songwriting workshops, all while continuing to write, produce, and perform.

North Mississippi Allstars

North Mississippi Allstars brings a sound rooted in their North Mississippi community, formed in 1996 by brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson and shaped by guidance from their father Jim Dickinson and local trailblazers RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner, and Fred McDowell. Luther’s first national run came with RL Burnside’s Ass Pocket of Whiskey tour in 1997, which packed venues across the United States and Canada. Brought on the road by Kenny Brown to play alongside RL and Cedric, he set the course for years of steady touring with Cody. The band began touring in 1998, and over time its lineup has featured collaborators including Cedric, Duwayne and Garry Burnside, Chris Chew, Berry Oakley Jr, Oteil Burbruidgem, and today includes Joey Williams of the Blind Boys of Alabama and Ray Ray Hollowman, a guitarist for Eminem and Nee-O. Since releasing their debut album in 2000, they have shared stages with artists such as Phil Lesh, Mavis Staples, Robert Plant, John Hiatt, the Allman Brothers, the Black Crowes, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, and Jon Spencer, earning multiple Grammy nominations for boundary-pushing records they describe as Modern Mississippi Music.
