Seneca Schoolhouse, Spring Trip (Region 5: MoCo)

Experience a day in a one-room classroom at the Seneca Schoolhouse, stepping into the lives of children who lived in Seneca in the 1880s. Students select an identity from the era, learn a short biography, and introduce themselves in character. Everyone uses slates with slate or soapstone pencils, just as students did long ago, when a single pencil could be worth two weeks of a working man’s wages. Lessons are shared across ages and may be adjusted for mixed groups. Boys and girls sit separately yet study together. Reading draws on McGuffey’s Reader, spelling and vocabulary practice culminates in a friendly bee, arithmetic ranges from basic operations to fractions and word problems, writing emphasizes careful penmanship on slates, and American history highlights the original thirteen colonies and their nicknames. Traditional songs such as Oh Susanna, Shoo Fly, The Star-Spangled Banner, and Yankee Doodle may be part of the day. Participants should be comfortable reading at a first or second grade level and spelling three-letter words, and the minimum age is five. Period clothing is encouraged to enhance the experience. Simple options work well, such as cotton, wool, or linen dresses with aprons for girls and pantaloons or knickers with shirts or short jackets for boys, with easy do-it-yourself ideas like trimming old pants into knickers or adding an apron and bonnet. Bring lunch in a paper bag, basket, or lunch pail, and include a beverage, since no food or drink is available on site. Period-style choices might feature bread with butter or lard, oatcakes, meat or cheese packed separately, fish, a hard-boiled egg or a potato, simple jelly or syrup sandwiches on homemade bread, fruit like apples or pears with oranges saved for special occasions, and homemade treats such as sugar cookies or molasses ginger cookies. Peanut butter was not yet in use and should be avoided due to allergies. Arrival and conduct follow historic customs. When the bell rings, students line up by height in separate lines for girls and boys, enter at the teacher’s direction, and stand by a desk until seated. They may be asked to help with chores such as bringing in wood or water, assisting younger classmates, or tidying the room, and are reminded to treat the museum’s century-old furnishings and materials with care. A small gift cabinet with era-appropriate souvenirs is available after the session during pickup, with payment by cash or check. This program is a drop-off field trip due to the size of the schoolhouse, space is limited, and the cost is $12 per person for ages five and up.

Radiant Rhythms Ecstatic Dance

Experience an expressive, substance-free dance journey guided in an inclusive, facilitated space. There are no prescribed steps, so you can move in whatever way feels right while honoring others’ space. The music rises from gentle tempos to energetic peaks, then settles into calm, helping participants shift from thinking to feeling and connect with their bodies, emotions, and the collective. The intention is a co-created environment where authenticity is welcome, often leading to mental clarity, emotional release, and a grounded sense of embodiment. Many people turn to this practice for stress relief, mindfulness and relaxation, somatic healing, self-expression, playful exercise, and a sense of community and connection. No experience is required. The gathering begins with an opening circle to meet and set intentions, flows into an hour and fifteen minutes of continuous music with no talking to encourage nonverbal connection, and concludes with a closing circle for reflections. There is also unstructured time before and after the dance for community connection. All ages, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities are welcome. Expect a curated mix of new age, worldbeat, tribal, and EDM arranged in a dance wave that is typically about half non-lyrical. A Couple's Night Out That Will Actually Help Your Relationship

An evening for couples focused on understanding the subtle shifts that can appear in midlife and quietly create distance. When conversations feel shorter, patience wears thin, or connection does not flow as easily, there are often underlying changes at play in the body and nervous system. This program explains what is happening so partners can respond differently, together. Participants gain a clearer picture of changes affecting both health and relationships, with insight into why communication, patience, and intimacy may feel different. Expect practical tools that encourage awareness instead of frustration and support a renewed sense of being on the same team. Topics include perimenopause and menopause and their stages, midlife hormonal changes including testosterone, and how mood, sleep, stress, and energy can shift. It also explores how each partner’s system influences the other, why communication and connection may change, and how these shifts can surface in intimacy, patience, and reactions. The session offers strategies to support balance, along with mindful and lifestyle approaches that help, so couples can act with understanding rather than assumption. This is for partners who sense a change in closeness, want to communicate more effectively without constant friction, are navigating midlife together, or prefer to be proactive before challenges worsen. Led by Neil Spiegel, DO, MBA, board certified in Physical Medicine, Regenerative and Functional Medicine with a root cause, whole body focus, and Harita Raja, MD, a board certified psychiatrist specializing in emotional health, relationships, and mental well-being. Cost is $50 per couple and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres.

2026 Heroes’ Memorial 5k & 10k

At Lake Needwood, runners can choose a 5k or 10k on scenic routes that wind through the trails of Rock Creek Regional Park. This event contributes points to the organizer’s Year‑Long 5k, 10k and Back of the Pack Series, as well as the Spring Series. An at‑home option is available for those who prefer to participate virtually. Participants receive a finisher medal, a technical performance shirt, and chip timing. The event partners with the John P. Mayhugh Foundation, a 501(c)(3) established in 2017 to honor John Powell Mayhugh, supporting a more holistic approach to brain health and working to remove barriers to recovery for those affected by post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and addiction. The course includes roughly a mile of paved path with the remaining distance on rolling trails. The 5k is one out and back, while the 10k completes the out and back twice. Water stations are placed along the courses, with approximate locations near miles 0.8 and 2 on the 5k, and near miles 0.8, 2, 3.1, 3.9 and 5.1 on the 10k. Some stations include sports drink, and placements may be adjusted as needed. A Back of the Pack program is offered for runners who average a higher pace, giving participants of similar speeds a way to compete for series points. Awards recognize the top three men and women overall, plus first and second place in the following age groups: 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 plus. Live results and runner tracking are available, and final results with series points are posted online after the race. Packet pickup takes place on site. Same‑day registration is offered, with a limited chance of receiving preferred shirt sizes and a small fee increase on race morning. Restrooms are available within the park. Event photos are shared on social media after the race, and a weekly social media spotlight selects a favorite post from the previous race weekend for a discount toward a future event. Volunteers support water stations, course marshaling and finish line operations, with parking details provided by the organizers. The race typically proceeds in most weather conditions, and any schedule changes are communicated by email and social media. Banditing is not permitted and may result in removal from the course and disqualification from current and future events. Information about refunds and transfers is provided by the organizers.

Now based in New York City, he is known for reimagining familiar tunes within a modern jazz context, with past appearances at Strathmore Music Center, Warner Theatre, Minton’s Playhouse, and Keystone Korner. Following a successful solo performance at the Arts Barn, he returns to that stage with his trio.

LIFE'S A BEACH: Adults Mixed Level Aerial Dance 8 Week Series with Student Showcase at ON St. Elmo

Settle into a summer state of mind with an adults mixed level aerial dance series that turns beach daydreams into performance. Across eight weeks, participants build technique for a choreographed piece, then move into the performance space for dedicated staging and refinement. Each student chooses their own music and develops a character inspired by that song, with movement tailored to individual experience so every piece feels personal. The journey concludes with a live student showcase at ON St. Elmo for friends, family, and the community. Performing is optional, and students are welcome to complete the training and rehearsals without appearing in the showcase. Prerequisite requirements include completing a 4 Week Aerial Arts Foundations course or two private lessons at Flying Buddha, along with a commitment to consistent aerial practice. Enrollment is limited to 8 students. The series fee is $500, and payment plans are available through the front desk.
