The Armoury Wargames and HobbiesWalking Tour: Underground Railroad
This walking tour explores New Bedford’s deep connections to the Underground Railroad and the people who came here seeking freedom and opportunity. Learn how a loose network of individuals, communities, and travel routes supported those escaping slavery, and why in the 1800s New Bedford became a key destination with a strong maritime economy, jobs linked to whaling, and support from free Black residents, formerly enslaved people, abolitionists, maritime ties, and established community networks. Along the way, hear about those who built new lives, strengthened local industries and neighborhoods, and helped shape the history of the region. The route moves through historic streets and notable sites while highlighting the city’s role as an international port that connected people, commerce, and ideas during a time of major change in American history. Experience the places where these stories unfolded and continue to be part of New Bedford’s heritage today.
