Prospective families can get a close look at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts through an open house experience. Students observe live classes while parents hear from school administrators. The visit includes a guided walk around campus, conversations with current students, and lunch in the dining hall. A letter confirming attendance is provided for students to share with their schools. Lunch is available at $7 per person plus tax. Participation is recommended for students in eighth grade or higher. Try your luck in a weekly Queen of Hearts raffle where one ticket is selected each drawing. Tickets cost $1 and are available all week in the Canteen. Sales close 30 minutes before the drawing. Write your name, phone number, and an envelope number from 1 to 54 on every ticket you purchase. When a ticket is chosen, the envelope with the matching number is removed from a sealed board to reveal the card inside. Revealing the Queen of Hearts pays 50 percent of the total jackpot if you are present or 40 percent if you are not. Revealing a Joker pays $50, and all other cards do not award cash. The jackpot grows and carries over from week to week until the Queen of Hearts is drawn. Players must be 18 or older. The board starts with 54 sealed envelopes representing a full deck plus two jokers, and once a card is revealed it is out of play. Prizes must be claimed within 30 days or they revert to VFW Post 3106. All proceeds support VFW Post 3106 Programs and Veterans. Winnings of $600 or more require IRS income tax reporting and completion of Form W2-G before payment. This raffle is conducted under Louisiana Charitable Gaming laws.

Future Vet Day invites kids to step into the role of veterinarian for an interactive hospital adventure. Each participant is paired with a new furry friend and guides it through stations that mirror real veterinary care, including an exam, X-rays, lab testing, a treatment plan, and more. Young vets receive keepsakes such as a stethoscope, a name badge, a coloring book, and a goodie bag while supplies last. The event is free, open to the community, and welcoming to toddlers, elementary, middle, and high school students. Donations will be collected to support The Stroup Family, connected to a staff member whose child is battling childhood cancer. Cajunman Sneauxballs and Bill’s Lemonade will be on site for refreshing treats. Runners and walkers take to a scenic course through the Historic District and along the riverbank in downtown Natchitoches for the 14th annual 5K and 1-mile fun run supporting the Women’s Resource Center of Natchitoches. This awareness and fundraising event attracts participants from across the state and highlights the Center’s mission to care for local families. Proceeds help cover operational costs so the Center can continue offering free, confidential services such as pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, prenatal education, emotional support, and material assistance. Care is provided at no cost regardless of insurance or income, serving more than 400 people in the community each year. The Center is a nonprofit pregnancy help medical clinic supporting women in pregnancy across Northwest and Central Louisiana. The run coincides with the Natchitoches Jazz Festival, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the Historic District with music and activities around town. Another for the same age range explores rainforests and the remains of ancient cultures, featuring hands on projects like sundials, glyphs, and works influenced by archaeological ruins. Auditions are being held for Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in the lobby of the Kress Theater. The production is directed by Diane Falcone and is a Tony Award winner for Best Play. The story follows middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia, who share their late parents’ home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and spend their days clashing over unfulfilling routines. Their sister Masha, a globe-trotting movie star, arrives with her much younger boyfriend, Spike, stirring up old grudges and talk of selling the house. Also in the mix are Cassandra, the housekeeper who issues ominous forecasts that others dismiss, and Nina, a sincere and starry-eyed neighbor’s niece eager to act. A cast of six is sought, with roles for two men and four women. Vanya is a man in his fifties who has settled into a quiet life. Sonia, his adopted sister of a similar age, struggles with insecurity and regret. Masha, another sibling in her fifties, is glamorous, successful, and financially supports the household. Spike, her mid-twenties boyfriend, is an ambitious performer who soaks up attention. Nina is a lovely, enthusiastic young woman with big acting dreams. Cassandra is the cleaning lady whose visions of the future often prove right, even if no one believes her.

Safe Sitter classes from CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini equip youth ages 11 and up with the know-how to stay safe at home, care for younger children, and take on babysitting responsibilities. Participants learn essential skills such as how to respond to a choking emergency and how to handle severe weather, along with practical tips for everyday situations. Sessions are held in the Women’s and Children’s Conference Room, just to the left of the gift shop on the first floor of the Women’s and Children’s Tower Atrium. Multiple dates are available.

Build practical navigation skills during a hands-on half day workshop at Kisatchie National Forest’s Longleaf Vista Trail. Participants learn to interpret topographic maps, read contour lines and elevation, recognize terrain features, use a compass with a map, take and follow azimuths, and orient a map to the landscape, with time spent practicing bushwhacking and real-world route finding. Designed for hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and preparedness-focused learners, the session blends clear instruction with field application. Attendees should come prepared with long pants and long sleeves for brush protection, closed-toe hiking boots, a backpack with 2 to 3 liters of water, a personal first aid kit, paper and pencil, sun protection such as a hat, and optional insect repellent. Copies of topographic maps, a map protractor, and compasses are provided, and you are welcome to bring your own compass. Expect an active outing covering approximately 2 to 3 miles over uneven terrain while navigating by map and compass. Safety measures include a first aid kit on hand, the group staying together, required waivers, and weather-dependent planning with rain dates available. The cost is $75 per person.

Participants take part in interactive, hands-on activities, learn about academic options and related career opportunities, and engage with university staff and professionals for insight into a variety of fields. It is designed for students who are beginning to shape their college and career goals and want a closer look at what NSU offers. The cost is $20, and registration will be available through the NSU Career Center.
39th September Competition: Opening Reception
The opening reception marks the start of the annual juried exhibition, selected by guest juror Chase Quinn of the Mississippi Museum of Art from national and international submissions. The showcase focuses on contemporary practice across a wide range of media and features artists working at a high level in their fields. The September Competition also strengthens connections between the museum and artists who are excelling in their mediums.

Summer Camp: Outside the Lines
AMoA’s summer art camps welcome children ages 6 to 12 from central Louisiana for a focused week of creativity. Guided by Cindy Blair, campers explore projects inspired by contemporary artists highlighted in AMoA’s 38th September Competition. Time in the galleries fuels learning about working artists and experimentation across multiple media, culminating in original pieces made by each participant. Sessions are offered over two separate weeks and are organized by age group to create a meaningful experience for every camper.

AMoA offers a summer art experience for children ages 6 to 12 from across central Louisiana, featuring two weeklong sessions arranged by age for meaningful learning. This five day interdisciplinary camp, Our Voices Matter, brings together visual art, music, and storytelling. Through hands-on projects, rhythm and sound exploration with percussion, writing, and thoughtful reflection, participants engage their senses and take part in age-appropriate conversations about community, belonging, and care. Campers consider how artists and musicians share ideas, feelings, and values, and they discover that their voices matter while using creativity as a tool for connection and community care. Separate sessions serve ages 6 to 9 and 10 to 12, with a variety of engaging activities tailored to each group.
