Finding Your Why: a Sensory Journey into Creative Nonfiction with Leigh Claire Schmidli

Guided by Leigh Claire Schmidli, this hands-on creative nonfiction workshop centers on attention, curiosity, and the senses. Participants will step outside for a relaxed stroll and on-the-spot writing in the park, building the habit of noticing what the world is offering. Afterward, the group returns to the classroom to sift through those observations and surface insights that may be working beneath the surface. The process can spark a brand-new essay or breathe life into work set aside, and it offers a repeatable approach for both starting and revising nonfiction. Open to writers at any stage. Schmidli teaches creative writing at Eastern Kentucky University, frequently facilitates workshops for the Kentucky Foundation for Women and other nonprofits, and her poetry, fiction, and lyric essays have appeared in Ruminate Magazine, Phoebe, and the Los Angeles Review. Cost is $35.

Shimmy & Shine Annual Fundraiser 2026

Celebrate dance, culture, and community while supporting The Nest, Center for Women, Children, and Families in Lexington, KY. This fundraiser invites participants to explore belly dance through a multi-part journey that builds skills and gives back to a vital local nonprofit. Two choreographies are offered for all levels, with instruction available in studio and online through livestreams and videos. One piece is inspired by the Golden Era of Egyptian belly dance and focuses on elegant armwork, fluid movement, posture, and classic Raqs Sharqi technique. The second is Ascend, a theatrical veil work centered on seamless flow, expressive accents, and refined veil handling. Both are taught by Safiya Nawaar. Registration is $30 per choreography or $50 for both, and 100% of proceeds benefit The Nest. Classes are offered on multiple days each week, and beginners are welcome. Participants have the option to perform what they learn in Feather the Nest, a gala benefit at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center’s Black Box Theater featuring a mix of traditional, folkloric, fusion, and variety acts. Choreo registrants are highlighted in the show, and there will be a drawing for a four class card to support continued study. The countdown culminates on World Belly Dance Day at the Arabesque World Dance studio in downtown Lexington with daytime Discovery Workshops that introduce different styles, rhythms, and props. These sessions are donation based, with all funds directed to The Nest. A casual, pay your own way luncheon at a local restaurant follows for those who wish to continue the celebration. Open to all ages, body types, and experience levels, this experience offers flexible learning options, performance opportunities, and a meaningful way to uplift the community through dance.

Think forbidden crushes, texts better left unsent, situationships that deserve study, and revelations that could derail a family dinner... all of it lands on stage. Comedians perform their sets, then read the submissions aloud. They cheer you on, roast you a little, spiral right alongside you, and offer advice that feels empowering even if it is probably not textbook approved. The vibe is unfiltered and anything goes, with stylish chaos leading the way. The night caps off with a burlesque and drag show to keep things flirty, feral, and full of energy. Amber turns thirty with zero supervision, and the crowd gets to be honest, a little messy, and delightfully bold.

E Pluribus Horror Media Club

E Pluribus Horror is a media club that brings history and horror into conversation through books, films, and comics. Each meeting revolves around one shared work and invites a thoughtful, open discussion. No deep background in horror is required, only curiosity and a willingness to approach the past from unexpected perspectives. This session focuses on Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff, a novel that blends historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian elements as it follows Atticus Turner, a Black man journeying to find his missing father in 1950s Jim Crow America. The narrative pairs the everyday brutality of segregation with uncanny dangers, using familiar horror devices to underscore the realities of systemic racism. Bellhead and more

Artfarm hosts a night of dark textures and surging energy with a three-act bill featuring Bellhead, Yellow Wallpaper, and Chlorine. Bellhead, a Chicago two-piece that fuses post-punk and industrial, delivers a charged, bass-forward live set shaped by extensive U.S. touring and support appearances alongside Stabbing Westward, Clan of Xymox, Christian Death, and Powerman 5000, while drawing attention from national media and festivals. Lexington’s Yellow Wallpaper brings a dark-alt sound that blends post-punk tension with grunge grit and emotionally heavy writing, shifting from brooding mood to cathartic release with raw vocals and serrated, melodic guitar. Chlorine, the Lexington project of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joseph Magnum, pairs shadowy post-punk atmospheres with sharp alt-rock hooks for songs that build from simmering intensity to explosive peaks, landing with extra force on stage. Streetfest

Celebrate streets as shared public places as a stretch of road is closed to traffic so people can ride, scoot, skate, and simply walk freely. The festival includes games, inflatable play structures, vendors, and food. It highlights that streets serve everyone, whether they bike, walk, roll, or drive, and encourages people to imagine what a complete street could look like. Dogs are welcome, but they must be on a non-retractable leash.
