Science Happy Hour

Settle in for a Science Happy Hour as Dr. Lieberman explores what the rise and fall of steam locomotives can teach about evolution. The presentation takes on a central question in evolutionary biology... does competition truly determine which species endure and which go extinct... and notes that fossil evidence for this idea is more limited than many assume. Using the shift from steam to diesel engines, electric trains, automobiles, and trucks as a real-world case study, the talk connects technological change to biological patterns. Through this lens, attendees consider what scientists would expect to see in nature if competition is a major force, then compare those expectations with the fossil record. Blending science, history, technology, and storytelling, this program offers a fresh perspective on evolution and extinction. Happy Hour drinks are available. Tickets are free for members and $10 for non-members.

The Backsell with Jason Vivone - Bonnie Bramlett!

KC blues bandleader and radio host Jason Vivone presents a monthly edition of The Backsell, guiding listeners through recordings by artists who range from household names to overlooked contributors to the musical conversation. This session features Missouri Masterworks with a salute to St. Louis vocalist Bonnie Bramlett, whose path includes being the first white Ikette in the Ike and Tina Turner Revue and late 1960s acclaim as half of the blue-eyed soul duo Delaney and Bonnie. Ladies Who Swing the Band revisits Eileen Barton, remembered for the 1950 million-selling hit "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake," and for a career that moved from childhood vaudeville to frequent radio and television appearances under the mentorship of Frank Sinatra. The Guitar Grind turns to guitarists who tore into Bob Dylan’s catalog, highlighting Hendrix, Michael Hedges, Tom Pricipato, and Danny Gatton. Miss Matched - 1st positive portrayal of ichthyosis in film/TV

Miss Matched is a scripted love story created by Jonathan Green, who also serves as writer, director, and lead actor. After a difficult divorce, an architect who fears his rare skin condition will keep him from finding love hires an unconventional matchmaker, and their partnership challenges what both believe about romance. Growing up with ichthyosis, Green rarely saw himself reflected in human characters on screen, which led him to create what he describes as the first positive portrayal of ichthyosis in a narrative work. This is not a documentary or a story of despair. It is a romance with a lead who happens to have a rare skin condition, presented with a familiar, welcoming tone so audiences meet a character with a disability in a world they already associate with joy, allowing him to simply belong. Jonathan Green will appear in person.
