Microphone Bootcamp

Dive into the fundamentals of microphone technology with a practical workshop presented by Shure Microphones. Guidance comes from industry expert Jon Sisson and Shure representative Sam Dowty alongside the venue’s staff, with a focus on using microphones effectively in both live sound and studio recording. The session explains how microphones work, compares dynamic and condenser models, and highlights where each type excels. Participants explore how placement and technique shape tone and clarity, gain strategies to reduce noise, bleed, and feedback, and learn to use polar patterns to isolate vocals, control problem spots, or capture room ambiance. Hands-on demo stations let you hear the differences between vocal mics through direct A/B comparisons and experiment with choices for miking a snare using a dedicated rig. There is time for demos and Q&A during the break and after the class, and arriving when doors open allows for extra time at the stations. This workshop is part of a six-session training series that also features digital audio mixing fundamentals, advanced digital mixing, advanced wireless audio systems, a ticketed three-day Avolites Titan console course, and loudspeaker fundamentals.

In the Indiana Room of the Center Building, this collaborative exhibition with Muncie Juneteenth centers the voices and visions of young people. Children imagine the roles they hope to hold in the years ahead, including scientist, artist, leader, and caregiver, and those ambitions are rendered in portraiture. Each image speaks to identity and possibility, showing that when youth see themselves represented, a sense of belonging grows. The result is a celebration of big dreams and a reminder to support them today, because the community’s future is already present, bright and brimming with potential.
