Cone killing aka slow speed motorcycle skills practice

At Simpson's Harley-Davidson, riders of every experience level on any make or model can take part in a free slow speed skills session designed to build confidence and control. Practice centers on navigating cone layouts while managing clutch, throttle, and brakes with precision. Participants can share specific challenges and have targeted exercises arranged to address those areas, with new drills focused on balance and very low speed maneuvering to refine clutch, throttle, and rear brake coordination. Elements from the Illinois DMV exam are recreated, including a cone weave, a right hand turn, and a left hand U-turn. Beginner and intermediate riders work toward tighter U-turns in both directions at about 18 to 22 feet, along with a keyhole circle starting around 30 feet wide, a figure eight near 24 feet, a W pattern with lanes about 9 to 12 feet, and an intersection layout 18 to 24 feet wide that includes multiple U-turns each way. Cone weaves vary too, with spacing commonly 10 to 15 feet and occasional offsets of roughly 2 to 12 feet. As skills improve, riders can try intermediate to expert police style patterns or continue polishing existing ones. Safety requirements are similar to an MSF class. A DOT helmet and over ankle footwear are required, and long sleeves and gloves are recommended. Participants use their own motorcycles and a waiver must be completed.

Black Authors Book Club

A discussion-focused book club highlights works by Black authors and offers a space for all readers to share and learn about the Black experience and the books that reflect it. The current selection is Beloved by Toni Morrison, an innovative portrait of a woman haunted by the past. Sethe was born into slavery and escaped to Ohio, yet eighteen years later she is still bound by memories of Sweet Home, a place of beauty where terrible things occurred. Her home is troubled by the angry spirit of her baby, who died without a name and left a single word on a tombstone, Beloved. As Sethe fights to keep the past from overtaking her life, a mysterious teenage girl appears calling herself Beloved, and a long-buried secret breaks into the present. Blending the power of legend with historical truth, the novel remains a lasting work of American literature.

Cone killing aka slow speed motorcycle skills practice

This free slow-speed motorcycle skills practice at Simpson's Harley-Davidson welcomes every rider and every type of bike. The session focuses on building confidence and precise control at low speeds by working clutch, throttle, and brake coordination through cone-based patterns, including new drills that emphasize balance and steady, controlled riding. Participants can identify specific challenges and tailored setups will be created to target those skills. Elements inspired by the Illinois DMV test are included, such as a cone weave, a right turn, and a left U-turn. For newer and intermediate riders, exercises feature tighter U-turns in both directions at 18 to 22 feet, a keyhole circle starting at 30 feet wide, a 24-foot figure eight, a W pattern with 9 to 12-foot lanes, and an intersection layout 18 to 24 feet wide that involves a series of U-turns in each direction. Additional weaves use cones spaced 10 to 15 feet apart, sometimes offset by 2 to 12 feet. As skills improve, riders can explore intermediate to expert police-style patterns or continue refining existing techniques. Requirements are similar to an MSF class: a DOT-compliant helmet and over-the-ankle footwear are required, long sleeves and gloves are preferred, riders use their own motorcycles, and a waiver must be completed.

2026 INPS Central Chapter Native Plant Sale

Bring your landscape to life with regionally grown native plants at the annual Central Chapter Native Plant Sale in the Reisch Pavilion (Food-o-Rama) at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Known as the region’s largest native plant sale, it features an expanded selection of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants that support biodiversity and create habitat for wildlife. Many species are produced from local seed by chapter members and partnering nurseries. A current species list will be posted on the chapter website, and last year’s list can help with planning. First-time attendees may want to arrive early, since popular plants often sell out quickly even as quantities increase. Proceeds benefit the chapter’s grant program, which funds native plant projects led by local organizations, schools, graduate students, and community partners. Volunteers are welcome for tasks such as propagation, preparation, advertising, and assistance during the sale. Cone killing aka slow speed motorcycle skills practice

Sharpen low speed riding skills in a free practice session at Simpson’s Harley-Davidson, open to every rider and every make and model. The focus is slow, precise control using clutch, throttle, and brake while navigating cone layouts that build confidence and reduce the chance of tip‑overs. Participants can share specific challenges and tailored drills will be set up to target those areas. New balance and slow‑ride exercises highlight finesse with the clutch, throttle, and rear brake. Portions of the Illinois DMV course are available, including a cone weave, a right turn, and a left U‑turn. Beginner and intermediate riders can work on tighter U‑turns than the state test in both directions within about 18 to 22 feet, a keyhole circle starting around 30 feet wide, a figure‑eight at roughly 24 feet wide, a W pattern with lanes about 9 to 12 feet wide, and an intersection pattern about 18 to 24 feet wide that links four U‑turns each way. Additional cone weaves may be arranged with spacing of about 10 to 15 feet, sometimes offset by 2 to 12 feet. As skills improve, riders can try more advanced police‑style patterns or continue refining existing techniques. Requirements are similar to an MSF safety class. A DOT helmet and over‑ankle boots or shoes are required, long sleeves and gloves are preferred, participants use their own motorcycle, and a waiver must be completed.

The run sets off by the Route 66 Experience and follows a scenic loop through the grounds, blending fitness with a nod to classic Americana. A defining feature is a full mile on the Illinois State Fair Grandstand Track, the storied oval known for motorsports, concerts, and long-standing State Fair traditions. An official split is recorded for that mile, giving runners a built-in checkpoint within the race. Whether aiming for a personal best, running for pure enjoyment, or saluting the highway’s milestone, participants become part of the celebration.
