Summer Art Club

Designed for ages 12 to 14, this weekly, one-hour creative studio welcomes junior high artists who enjoy drawing, painting, experimenting, and finding inspiration in art history. Sessions are led by Madison Hoagland, an Idaho State University Honors Program student with experience teaching in the summer program at Grace Lutheran School. Participants build skills, try new materials, and connect with creative peers through a blend of instructor-led projects and open studio time in a supportive setting. The club runs throughout the summer and offers flexible enrollment with two punch card options: four classes for $60 for members or $80 for nonmembers, and two classes for $30 for members or $50 for nonmembers. Participants head into the field with museum paleontologists to hunt for fossils in 500 million year old rocks near Bear Lake. Water Rocket Festival

Tydeman Park in Pocatello becomes a launch site as the Idaho State University Department of Physics presents a hands-on Water Rocket Festival. On each festival day, the first 100 attendees who are 16 or younger receive supplies to build a water rocket. ISU students introduce the principles behind successful flight, then help budding rocketeers design and launch their creations. The participant whose rocket travels the farthest earns a water-rocket launcher. This family-friendly STEM experience highlights topics such as Newton’s laws, mechanical energy, and aerodynamics. Past competitions have seen winning flights exceed 100 meters, or 328 feet. The festival takes place alongside the Kiwanis Club of Pocatello’s 58th annual Bing Hong Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. First held in 2011, the event continues a local tradition of science learning and playful competition.

Independence Day Parade

The Independence Day Parade salutes America’s 250th birthday with a community procession and clear guidance for participants. Commercial entries are 60 dollars, nonprofit entries are 25 dollars, and there is no fee for military or veteran entries. Check-in takes place on Harrison Ave, which should be reached via W. Day, W. Carson, W. Greeley, W. Young, or W. Sherman. Do not enter from W. Sublette St. or from Main Street. Volunteers will handle check-in and placement, so please plan for a patient and courteous process. Restrooms at the Pavilion will be open during staging, and public facilities are available along the route at Station Square and Lookout Point. The course includes several turns. If your entry needs walkers to help with corners, keep them with you for the full route. Judging occurs before the parade begins. To be considered, have your entry fully assembled and operating when the judges pass by, as evaluating all entries takes time. Awards will recognize the best overall entry with a grand prize, along with honors for patriotism, originality, business or commercial presentation, and school spirit. The parade proceeds in the order entries arrive, with sponsors and dignitaries placed ahead. The route starts and finishes at N. Main Street and W. Fremont Street. A flagger will direct entries into parking via W. Fremont or W. Wyeth. Wait to unload or remove decorations until you are completely off the route and in the lots, and please clean up after your group to help keep this traditional community event running smoothly.

Idaho paleontologists are heading into rock formations near the Montana border to search for fossils from Tyrannosaurus and its close relatives Albertosaurus and Daspletosaurus. Participants ages 14 and up can assist by adding fresh eyes to terrain that has not previously been surveyed by scientists, contributing to ongoing research on Idaho’s dinosaurs. The cost is $150 and includes all tools, training, and transportation from Pocatello. The experience centers on learning how to prospect effectively and sharing discoveries with the research team.

Free Performance of “The Merchant of Venice” and "Much Ado About Nothing"

Montana Shakespeare in the Parks brings free performances of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Much Ado About Nothing to Idaho State University. Enjoy the shows outdoors on the ISU Hutchinson Memorial Quadrangle, with an inclement weather move to the ISU Pond Student Union Ballroom. Seating is first come, first served, and those using tall chairs are asked to sit farther back to keep sightlines clear for blankets and low chairs. A special pre-show performance is planned and will be announced. Picnics are welcome. Audio accessibility is available with personal FM receivers and headphones to borrow from the merchandise table, or by using a free app to listen on a personal device. For the app option, download AudioFetch, connect to the WiFi network named Shakespeare! which does not require a password, and use your own headphones. Hosted by the Pocatello Arts Council.

IMNH paleontologists and paleobotanists lead a hands-on excavation focused on plants from the age of dinosaurs. Participants age 14 and up will work at a rare Idaho fossil site that preserves the vegetation that surrounded the region’s dinosaurs during the time of Oryctodromeus. The experience focuses on opening a quarry and carefully uncovering uncommon plant fossils that contribute to understanding this ancient ecosystem. All tools are provided, training is included, and transportation is covered from Pocatello. The cost is $155, museum members receive a 10% discount, and space is limited so registration is required.
