Morningside STEM Elementary Kindergarten Registration

This in-person registration day at Morningside STEM Elementary School - SCCSD provides personalized support for incoming kindergarten families and an opportunity to become familiar with the school before fall. Families can meet teachers, see the classroom, and gather the information and tools needed for a confident start. After completing online pre-registration, the District follows up with next steps and assigns a specific registration time. The visit typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Upon arrival, families check in at the main entrance, where Sioux City Community School District staff guide them through each part of the process. Parents and guardians complete online verification by providing contact details, requesting bus transportation, filling out District forms, and paying fees for curriculum resources like textbooks, electronic devices, and other materials. A brief survey about home language and ethnicity helps determine whether English learner support is appropriate. English as a Second Language services are available in every SCCSD school, using targeted methods and curriculum to build skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, study strategies, academic vocabulary, and cultural understanding. If EL services may be needed, students take an additional assessment so the District can plan for the school year. During registration, the school nurse collects health documentation, including immunization records, a vision card or certificate, dental screening or certificate, and blood lead screening information. Children also participate in a kindergarten readiness screening that may look at self-care abilities, early cognitive skills such as recognizing colors, shapes, letters, and sounds, and physical skills like running, skipping, walking backward, cutting with scissors, holding a pencil, or completing a simple puzzle. Staff observe students during an activity to understand social and emotional skills while interacting with peers and adults.

Trauma Management: Scenario-Based Training

Build confident, life-saving reactions with a scenario-driven trauma care course at RTTI that turns practice into instinct. The training is designed for everyday people without a medical background, using clear instruction and minimal equipment to make critical skills easy to learn and recall under stress. Instructors bring experience from Army special mission units, sniper teams, and fire and EMS, and they teach without jargon so the essentials are straightforward and practical. Participants learn to apply the MARCH algorithm as a simple roadmap in emergencies, how to contact first responders effectively, and how to address the most immediate threats by controlling bleeding, maintaining breathing, and preserving body heat. Hands-on work covers rapid tourniquet application, pressure dressings, and wound packing, along with guidance for chest, head, and abdominal injuries, including what to avoid. Safe victim movement is practiced through team drags, single-person carries, and careful repositioning, and the course finishes with realistic scenarios that build automatic responses and clear communication for a smooth handoff to EMS. Course cost is $75 per student.

COFFEE ORIGINS 101 - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Coffee Origins 101 is a foundational class focused on building a clear understanding of coffee. It is required before taking subsequent classes and is designed for enthusiasts, future shop owners, or anyone ready to move beyond a basic cup. The session follows coffee’s path from farm to final brew, covering how the beverage took root and became a global industry and how coffee culture in the United States progressed from the first to the third wave. Participants learn about coffee plants and species and how they are grown, the impact of harvesting and processing choices on flavor, the fundamentals of flavor chemistry, and how beans are classified and evaluated for quality. The class also introduces roasting, brewing methods, and sensory skills such as cupping and identifying flavor notes. Presented in a welcoming, straightforward style that emphasizes practical knowledge, this class runs 1.5 hours at Coffee King and is limited to 10 participants.

Acacia Wellness brings a limited-time pop-up to Thrive Wellness Center in Sioux City featuring clinical thermography and ultrasound imaging. Following a successful ultrasound day held previously at this location, this visit expands services to include both targeted and full-body thermography for broader insight into personal health. Services are safe, noninvasive, and radiation free. Thermography can help reveal inflammation early, sometimes before symptoms appear. It supports proactive, preventive monitoring, is comfortable to receive, offers full-body or region-specific views into circulation and nerve activity, and helps track changes over time. Imagination Station Open Studio

Explore hands-on creativity at a come-and-go open studio offered on the first Friday of each month. The space provides a welcoming setting with lots of materials, including paint sticks, markers, beads, canvas boards, and more, so you can make something uniquely your own. There is no formal instruction, but staff are available to answer questions and demonstrate how to use the supplies. Try new ideas, take your artwork home when you are finished, and leave the cleanup to the venue. Children must be accompanied by a supervising adult who is at least 18. Wear clothing that can get messy. Members pay $5 per child and adult pair, with $3 for each additional child. Non-members pay $7 per pair, with $5 for each additional child.

FLASH TATTOO EVENT: May is for Miracles Collab with Children’s Miracle Network

A collaborative flash tattoo fundraiser with Children’s Miracle Network directs all proceeds to support medical equipment and care for children facing serious illness or injury. Tips are welcomed and go directly to the artists to help cover tattoo supplies. Designs will be preselected flash, priced between $30 and $50. Tattoos are approximately 1 to 2 inches, cannot be resized, and may be flipped as a mirror image. Each includes either a single accent color with linework or black and gray shading. Placement is limited to arms and legs, with one tattoo per person unless a flash sheet indicates otherwise. Service is first come, first served. Expect a line, with an in-person waitlist to keep things moving, and you will receive a text or call when it is your turn. Not everyone on the list may be reached by the end. Previews of the available designs will be shared the day before or earlier. Guests are asked to be courteous to staff, who reserve the right to refuse service. Mike Langley is a singer songwriter and a 2012 inductee into the Iowa Rock ’n’ Roll Music Association Hall of Fame, and he has taught basic guitar through Western Iowa Tech’s Lifelong Learning program. Together the Langleys have shared the stage for more than 40 years, with appearances spanning Sioux City, Nashville, Tennessee, and Vienna, Austria.

Within The Seed - A Therapeutic Restorative Event

Hosted at Core Studio, this therapeutic and restorative gathering is rooted in the quiet power of a seed resting in the soil and the possibilities it holds. The experience begins with a Yin-based yoga session complemented by subtle energy work to gently open the body and settle the nervous system. It then transitions into guided reflection and a seeding ceremony that uses journal prompts and hands-on seed planting to help anchor intentions as living energies to nurture rather than goals to chase. Guided by the wisdom of the Herd and the rhythm of the season, the focus is on community, grounding, and tending what is already emerging within. The session is beginner friendly. Loess Hills Computer Programming Elementary Kindergarten Registration

Families enrolling in kindergarten at Loess Hills Computer Programming Elementary School, SCCSD, can take part in an in-person registration day focused on personalized support and a confident start to the new school year. The visit includes meeting teachers and seeing the classroom, along with guided help to complete each step of enrollment. After online pre-registration, the District will share next steps and provide an assigned time. Plan for about 30 to 45 minutes on site. Check-in begins at the main entrance, where Sioux City Community School District staff assist families through the process. Parents and guardians complete online verification to provide contact information, request bus transportation, fill out District forms, and pay curriculum resource fees that cover textbooks, electronic devices, and other materials. A Home Language and Ethnicity Survey helps determine whether English Language support is needed. Every SCCSD building offers English as a Second Language programming that uses specialized methods and curriculum to build listening, speaking, reading, writing, study skills, content vocabulary, and cultural orientation. If EL services may be appropriate, students take an additional assessment to help the District prepare for the start of school. During registration, the school nurse collects health documentation, including immunization records, a vision card or certificate, a dental screening or certificate, and blood lead screening information. Children also complete a kindergarten readiness screening that may look at self-care abilities like handwashing, toilet training, and putting on shoes, cognitive skills such as identifying colors, shapes, letters, and sounds, gross motor abilities like running, skipping, and walking backward, and fine motor skills such as cutting with scissors, holding a pencil, and completing a puzzle. Staff also observe children during an activity to understand social and emotional skills while interacting with peers and adults.

2026 St Luke's Children's Miracle Network Mediathon Event

A three day CMN mediathon fills the UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s Atrium in Sioux City as the St. Luke’s Foundation brings together radio and television to champion pediatric healthcare across Siouxland. Inspired by Children’s Miracle Network’s annual radiothon, the broadcasts with media partners KTIV and Powell Broadcasting share uplifting stories that illustrate the impact of community generosity. Attendees can take part in a major basket raffle, with about 90 percent of the baskets contributed by St. Luke’s staff, and the event wraps up with a public reveal of total funds raised followed by the raffle drawing. Listeners and viewers have several ways to support, including the Miracle Makers Club with monthly gifts of $15 or more and opportunities to fund specific supplies and equipment highlighted during shopping hours. Last year the Siouxland community raised more than $139,000 through listener support, sponsorships, and raffle ticket purchases. The goal is $150,000 this year, and 100 percent of donations stay local.

The meal centers on a full taco bar as the main course, prepared so there is enough for everyone even if no additional dishes arrive. Guests who choose to bring a dish can stop at the welcome table to list ingredients, helping those with allergies make safe choices. A list of needed taco bar items will be shared as the event approaches, and donations of ingredients support ongoing community meals. Afterward, any leftovers are delivered to The Warming Shelter so contributions continue to help others. A hands-on gardening class, Take Home Tomatoes, offers guidance for growing container tomatoes, and participants leave with a plant to care for throughout the season. Activities continue throughout the gathering. A free clothing swap invites clean, gently used items to be shared and taken, with remaining pieces added to the clothing closet for future use. Children can explore Cinco de Mayo themed crafts at a creativity station, and festive music fills the multipurpose room to highlight culture, community, and connection. The mission behind this event is to bridge the gap between those who have a little extra and those who could use a little help, ensuring access to food, resources, and meaningful connection. The aim is for guests to leave nourished in body and spirit. Those interested in contributing food, donating ingredients, or helping with setup are welcome to be involved. The Amarillo Warriors face the Sioux City Bandits in a hard-hitting indoor football showdown at Tyson Events Center. The smaller field and rapid substitutions keep the action close, so big plays develop in a hurry, takeaways can swing momentum quickly, and special teams play carries real weight. The matchup features high-scoring drives, intense defensive stands, and a quick tempo where adjustments show up right away.

World Migratory Bird Day Celebration

At Bacon Creek Park, a community celebration of bird migration brings together guided nature experiences, hands-on learning, and conservation action. Guided bird walks led by local birders Bill, Rex, and Tucker help participants spot migrating species and learn more about them. Families will find plenty to do, with storytimes hosted by the Sioux City Public Library and kid friendly activities such as bird games, Bird Bingo, and crafts. The program also features a mindful birding session with Kari Sandage, a talk and walk focused on recycling used fishing line with Kevin, a reflective birding experience with Sharon Polifka, and a park cleanup with recycling to support healthy habitats. Local environmental groups will share resources, expertise, and ways to get involved. Information will be available on the Loess Hills Audubon Society, the Loess Hills Wild Ones, the Northwest Iowa Group of the Sierra Club, Woodbury County Parks, and the Sioux City Public Library. Pause for a gentle, nature-centered experience that blends yoga, guided meditation, and mindful bird watching. No previous yoga or birding background is required. Participants may bring a yoga mat for floor based practice or a folding chair for a comfortable seated option, and a limited number of chairs will be available to borrow. This program is part of the World Migratory Bird Day Celebration and takes place at the shelter in Bacon Creek Park. Historic Preservation Bike Tour

The Sioux City Historic Preservation Commission presents the fourth annual bike tour during Historic Preservation Week, highlighting two decades of work to preserve the community’s story. The tour begins at Albrecht Cycle Shop and offers a casual ride lasting about 90 minutes. Participants should bring their own bicycles. Along the way, brief talks accompany stops at Pearl Street, the Montgomery Ward Building, the Sioux City Riverfront, Riverside Park, and the Sioux City Railroad Museum. Collectables Show

A two day card show in Sioux City has a few vendor openings because one longtime dealer will be out of town. Three 8 foot tables are available at $40 each for the full event. Prospective sellers are asked to share their name, mailing address, phone number, email, the products they sell at shows, and how many shows they have done. Applicants will be notified if selected, and a waiting list is available for future shows.

Summer Kickoff Family Day

The Sound of Music Auditions

Auditions are being held for The Sound of Music, the beloved musical set in Austria on the eve of World War II. Performers of all experience levels are welcome, with opportunities for both children and adults to audition. The story follows Maria, a spirited young woman who brings music and happiness back to the Von Trapp family, and it features iconic songs along with themes of love, family, courage, and standing up for what matters most. Separate audition sessions are offered for kids and for adults, and potential callbacks may occur. Teenagers aiming for specific child roles should attend the kid sessions, and they can indicate on their form if they are also open to portraying a young adult character.

Magic: The Gathering Commander

A casual Magic the Gathering Commander event at ACME welcomes players of all experience levels. Bring your Commander deck and enjoy friendly games in a relaxed setting. Participation is free.

Follow a ready-made glaze recipe or create your own, and learn tips along the way as the staff guides you step by step. The finished piece is made to be used and admired, and is safe for the oven, microwave, and dishwasher. You will select and pay for your item on the day. 50th Annual Loess Hills Prairie Seminar

Leaders of the 50th Annual Loess Hills Prairie Seminar will discuss and show images from the fifty years of preserving and enjoying the unique ecology of the Loess Hills. Conservation educators, naturalists, hikers, campers, and nature enthusiasts are invited. Those involved with the seminar will cover how it started, how it has evolved, and its current state. They will share images from past presenters and attendees and answer questions from the audience. The event is free, but donations are welcome.

Sunday Pinball Tournament

Participate in a pinball tournament. It is open to players of all skill levels. Check-in begins at 4:00. There is a $5 entry fee, plus the cost of tokens. INTRO TO CERAMICS (Art Class)

Learn foundational ceramics skills in a class at the Gilchrist Learning Center. Instruction covers hand building with clay slabs, with guidance for beginners and space for more experienced students to build on their knowledge. Participants may request time on the potter’s wheel to practice basic throwing. The course spans six sessions, and tuition includes use of equipment and tools, 25 pounds of clay, glazes, firings, and open studio access for the duration of the class. Ride of Silence

Siouxland Robotics Club Summer Day Camp

At Southern Hills Mall, the Siouxland Robotics Club offers an annual summer day camp designed for students in grades 5 through 7. Participants explore physics, math, and engineering while building and programming LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots to complete a series of fun, challenging space themed tasks. Activities culminate in Mars focused trials that put each robot through its paces using sensors, motors, and intelligent controllers. Working together throughout the camp, attendees practice teamwork and problem solving while gaining an early start in robotics and STEM.

Outdoor Yoga

Combine a nature walk with a calming practice in this outdoor session. The experience begins with a roughly one mile round trip hike with a moderate incline up to Mount Lucia, followed by a gentle yoga flow focused on stretching and relaxation amid scenic views. All experience levels are welcome, though previous yoga practice can be helpful. Please bring your own towel or yoga mat. The trail climbs steadily and may feel strenuous for some participants. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water, and keep in mind that shade is limited on Mount Lucia. A blanket under your mat can add an extra barrier from grass and dirt. 8th Annual Sergeant Bluff City-Wide Garage Sale

Global Gourmet: Cooking Around the World

Set out on a culinary journey through four half-day camps that introduce young cooks to flavors and techniques from around the globe. Participants will prepare dishes inspired by Greece, India, Kenya, and Russia while practicing essential kitchen skills. They will review kitchen safety, learn how to read and follow recipes, and create a personal passport with a stamp for every country explored. Registration covers all four sessions. Siouxland’s signature rib celebration returns for its 16th year with a fresh look and a renewed purpose, presented by Seaboard Triumph Foods. Taste standout barbecue from top Midwest cook teams as they face off in a KCBS-sanctioned competition, with a public tasting that lets attendees weigh in on the favorites. Live music, cold drinks, and a Kids Zone set a lively, family-friendly atmosphere, and ribs tend to go quickly. This festival powers Camp High Hopes, helping remove barriers and foster independence for individuals of all abilities in Siouxland. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the gate, and children 12 and under are admitted free.

HERd Sense - An Equine Assisted Therapy Group for High School Girls

Prairie River Counseling and STARS Inc present a four-session equine assisted psychotherapy group designed for high school girls preparing for a new school year. The series focuses on building confidence, strengthening self-worth, improving communication, and fostering genuine connection with self and others. Across the four weeks, participants explore forming healthy relationships, cultivating positive body image and self-esteem, navigating challenges with effective communication and problem solving, and weaving these skills into everyday life. Sessions use an experiential, ground-based approach with no riding. A STARS equine specialist and a therapist are present when working with the horses. Activities vary by group goals and may include grooming and observing the herd, storytelling, creative exercises, or structured tasks alongside the horses. This modality brings horses into the therapeutic process, offering an option for teens who feel stuck in traditional talk therapy, prefer to move and work hands-on, or simply appreciate time with equine partners that can reflect emotions and responses like co-therapists. The group meets outdoors when weather allows, so dressing for conditions is encouraged. Water is available, and many participants bring their own water, bug spray, and sunscreen if needed. Cost is $120 with payment plans available, and the event is non-refundable unless canceled by the host. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited to 10 teens.
