Artist Talk: June ON::View Artist-in-Residence Cheryl Capezzuti

An Artist Talk spotlights Cheryl Capezzuti, the May ON::View Artist-in-Residence. For close to three decades, the Pittsburgh based artist has transformed the castoffs of American life into sculptures that probe the human experience. What began as a playful look at domestic routine through lint took a more tender direction in 1999 after the loss of her grandmother, turning toward themes of love, loss and memory. In response to the 2020 pandemic, she again worked with dryer lint to mirror the contemporary American state of mind. By pairing this delicate material with sturdy metal armatures, she has created hundreds of large scale, archival works rooted in community. Her current project shapes figurative pieces from residential dryer lint that speak to what it feels like to be human right now. Savannah residents are invited to donate a bag of dryer lint along with a short handwritten note that shares who they are, what they wash and how they feel about doing laundry. These contributions will be used to create artworks on view in the ON::View residency space. Additional works by Capezzuti will be presented in The Ellis Gallery as part of Rooted, a group exhibition curated by guest curator Lisa Jaye Young. Support for this residency project includes an Artist Opportunity Grant from the Greater Pittsburgh Council for the Arts. The ON::View Residency is made possible with investment from the City of Savannah and support from Georgia Council for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Special thanks to local partners including Starlandia Supply, SCAD Museum of Art, Telfair Museums, Thompson Savannah, Green Truck Pub and Starland Yard.

Create Your Own Talisman Keychain

Ordinary Magic hosts a hands-on Crafting with Intention workshop led by Madison Timmons, where participants create a unique talisman keychain that serves as a tangible reminder of a personal intention, goal, or inner strength. The experience begins with a short intention-setting practice, then moves into designing and assembling the keychain with beads, ribbons, charms, and other meaningful symbols selected with purpose and intuition. Everyone leaves with a finished piece and a clearer sense of how symbolism can support everyday spiritual practice. A selection of materials is provided, and participants are encouraged to bring small personal items to incorporate into their talisman. Available supplies include assorted ribbons and cords, keychain hardware, beads, charms and symbolic pendants, spacer beads, jump rings, jewelry pliers, and scissors. About the facilitator: Madison Timmons is a Savannah-based psychic medium and RYT-200 yoga instructor, as well as the co-host of the award-nominated podcast The Most Haunted City on Earth. Through intuitive work, storytelling, and spiritual exploration, she helps people deepen their connection to themselves and the unseen, drawing on folk magic, symbolism, and personal ritual to bring intention into daily life.

HSF Panel Discussion: "Yamacraw Village: History, Community, and Continuity"

A panel presented by HSF at Historic First Bryan Baptist Church explores Yamacraw Village through the lenses of history, community, and continuity. The conversation traces the Yamacraw community from its 18th, 19th, and early 20th century roots, through the 1939 demolition of a multicultural neighborhood, to the 1941 development of a segregated public housing complex. It considers how Yamacraw Village reflects national currents in urban planning and public housing and the effects these trends have had on underrepresented communities. As the oldest federally funded housing project still standing in Savannah and among the earliest remaining in the United States, its planned demolition and redevelopment raise pressing questions about how public housing communities are preserved. The program also highlights First Bryan Baptist Church, founded in 1788 by Andew Bryan while he was enslaved at Brampton Planation. Recognized as one of the oldest Black Baptist churches in the United States, it has long served as a spiritual and community anchor for Yamacraw, a connection that is essential to understanding the neighborhood’s story. The discussion centers on why safeguarding history, a sense of place, faith, and community matters. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Registration is encouraged. The discussion will be held in the Sanctuary at First Bryan Baptist Church.
