Historical fiction author Lynn Cullen leads a discussion of her novel "When We Were Brilliant." In this program, Master Naturalist and Nature Educator Roseanne Guerra explains why fireflies matter and shares ways to make yards inviting habitats for these remarkable insects. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Now in its sixth year, the City’s Recreation and Parks Department presents a Mother’s Day weekend celebration at the Studio Theater at City Springs that brings moms and mother figures together with boys for an evening of dancing, games, dinner, refreshments, and prizes. A live DJ will keep the dance floor lively with favorites for both generations, and friendly dance contests and musical games add to the fun. Every boy receives a keepsake photo and a goody bag. The dress code is semi-formal. Tickets are $40 for one mother and son, with each additional son at $10. A reserved table option is available for $200, which includes admission for up to eight guests, equal to four mother son pairs, and guarantees a dedicated table for the entire event. One person should purchase the reserved table on behalf of the group and provide the names of all attendees afterward. Individual tickets are not required for guests covered by a reserved table purchase. Most seating will be open, and a small number of reserved tables for eight are available for groups that want to stay together. Shared tables will be cleared and refreshed between guests, so personal items should not be left on tables. Scholarships are available. Tickets are limited and not sold at the door.

Groovin' on the Green

Live acoustic sets from talented local musicians fill the Village Green. Attendees can purchase dinner, drinks, and dessert from onsite dining options and enjoy a picnic on the Green during the music. Performer announcements and any cancellations are shared on Halcyon social media and the Facebook event page. Outside food and coolers are not permitted. Attendance constitutes consent to be photographed or recorded without compensation, and Halcyon may use captured media for future publicity.

The session is led by Penny Hightower, a CNC Naturalist and Certified Forest Therapy Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. Participation is limited. Daily sessions introduce new supplies and techniques, leading to finished wearable pieces and small accessories that each camper plans and assembles. Mudflats can attract shorebirds (avocets were noted in 2017), the lake hosts winter ducks and nesting bald eagles, and the river, woodlands, and open fields provide additional opportunities for sparrows and more. The outing begins in the Overlook Park parking lot and follows the road below toward Morgan Falls Dam. Expect varied terrain that may include wet grass, stairs, gently sloped pavement, and unpaved trails. A spotting scope and loaner binoculars will be available for participants. Free parking and restrooms are available at Overlook Park. This is a free event, and registration is required to manage group size.

Summer Camp: Week 9

Spend a week packed with Dude Perfect style fun, from creative trick shots to big challenges and lighthearted competitions. Core activities take place during the day, and free extended care is available before and after the main schedule. All field trip fees are already included in the camp price, with a total of $295 when registering in March or April and $320 when registering in May or later. Families can pay in full or hold a spot with a non-refundable $50 deposit, with the remaining balance automatically charged two weeks before the week begins. Planned outings include the Aquatic Center and Adventure Air, and field trip T-shirts can be added at checkout. Up to two weeks before the start, you may move your deposit to a different week if space allows or cancel before the balance is charged, which forfeits the spot and deposit but avoids further billing. Within two weeks of the start, once the balance has been processed, the spot is confirmed for your child and can no longer be moved.
