Marine Biology Summer Camp

Land of Dragonflies Farm and School LLC presents a hands on, project based marine biology summer camp at Jekyll Island, with additional activities at Brunswick beaches. Participants work with real data, complete mock field exercises, and dive into STEM projects while a parent or grandparent remains on site to assist throughout the program. Over the course of the week, each day focuses on a different part of the ocean world. Topics include coral reefs and tide pool species with simulated coral fragmentation, team coral tree building, invertebrates with an emphasis on oysters and crabs, a sensory oyster settlement game, a vertical oyster garden restoration using real shell, and guided dissections. Shark and fish studies include ID games, simulated fin tagging with actual tagging tools and needles, mapping routes from authentic tracking data, and viewing blood samples under a microscope, along with fish printing to finish a custom shirt. Marine mammals and reptiles are explored through echolocation simulations, investigations into how whales and dolphins nurse underwater, reenactments of hunting strategies like bubble netting, and a mock sea turtle nest excavation with species identification, egg counts, and data charting. The final session addresses ocean threats such as pollution and invasive species, including lionfish detection and stomach content identification, an anti plastic art display project, a trivia review, and a wrap up lunch. This camp uses real scalpels, needles, miniature saws, and other professional tools, so it is not appropriate for anyone unable to safely handle sharp instruments or who is uncomfortable with blood or dissection. Enrollment is extremely limited and more than half of the spaces are already taken. The cost is $150 per participant. Registration is managed in the order of comments on the original post and requires a phone interview, a signed liability waiver, and completed paperwork. A $75 deposit holds a spot, with the remaining $75 due one month before the start to allow time to secure tools, specimens, and materials. If a reply is not received within 48 hours, the next person in line will be contacted, and a waiting list will be created once the camp is full.
