Rueda de Casino: Cuban Salsa Classes

Rueda de Casino Cuban salsa classes take place at WestShore Plaza in a welcoming setting where dancers can learn, practice, and socialize. Instruction is led by Robert Morales with assistant Laura Cristina, both with over two decades of experience in Casino and Rueda de Casino and more than a decade of teaching, complemented by ongoing training in Cuba and abroad. The program offers a progressive five week beginner series focused on core figures and clear lead and follow technique within the rueda circle, and new students are not accepted after the second week. The intermediate five week series builds on that foundation with added speed, technique, and recognition of standard hand signals, and it requires either successful completion of the beginner course or confident execution of moves such as Vacila, Exhibela also known as Sacala, Sombrero, Adiós or Prima con la Hermana, Setenta, and Balsero. The advanced class delivers a faster paced environment with more complex Cuban salsa patterns and continued refinement of partner and rueda skills, and it requires either successful completion of the intermediate course or confident execution of moves such as Coca Cola, Setenta Complicado, Dedo, Montaña, Juana la Cubana, and Sombrero Doble. Pricing is 60 dollars for a five class punch card or 20 dollars for a single walk in class, and purchasing a pass in the Dance Factory app before class helps everything start on time. Free parking is available. For questions, email DameSalsaCubana@gmail.com.

BRENN! - The Warm Up Tour with Hudson Ingram

Presented by Glory Days and Brokenmold, Brenn! brings The Warm Up Tour to Crowbar with Hudson Ingram. The Alabama artist, born Brennan Keller, draws on life in Tuscaloosa to shape cathartic, jangly folk-pop that blends classic storytelling with modern hooks and big singalong moments. Sally Hepworth: Mad Mabel

Bestselling author Sally Hepworth talks with Ashley Kritzer about her new novel, Mad Mabel. The story follows Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick, an 81-year-old who has spent six decades on Kenny Lane and worked hard to keep her past hidden. When a chatty young neighbor insists on becoming her friend, old secrets begin to surface and the questions grow louder. Who was Mad Mabel fifty years ago, who is Elsie today, and what happens if history repeats. Playing with the idea that people rarely suspect little girls or elderly women, the book blends suspense with humor, charm, and heart as it moves between past and present toward a conclusion shaped by justice and redemption. Hepworth is the author of The Secrets of Midwives, The Things We Keep, The Mother’s Promise, The Family Next Door, The Mother-in-Law, The Good Sister, The Younger Wife, and The Soulmate, and she has lived for extended periods in Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Canada. AUDITIONS - Predictor

Powerstories Theatre in Tampa is holding auditions for Predictor, a play by Jennifer Blackmer directed by Gigi Jennewein. It blends absurdist comedy, game show flair, and heartfelt reflection on personal agency. A cast of seven is sought. Meg Crane is a white female, 26, a graphic designer at Organon Pharmaceuticals. The remaining six performers form a chorus and cover multiple roles. One track is a younger female who portrays Jody, Lillian, and others. Lecture - When Women Ruled the World

Prof. Kara Cooney offers a deep look at women who rose to the highest levels of power in ancient Egypt during the Bronze Age. Despite structural barriers that limited women’s authority in much of human history, figures such as Hatshepsut and Nefertiti ruled the wealthiest state in the ancient Mediterranean. This lecture explores how these female kings navigated power and responsibility within their social constraints, investigates some of the roots of social inequality, and moves beyond legend to clarify their historical legacy. Sponsored by Charles and Elizabeth Lyman. The lecture is included with daily admission, with Art+ Museum Members and college students admitted free and not-yet-members paying $25.

Every Brilliant Thing

The New Tampa Performing Arts Center’s new Solo Spotlight Series highlights award-winning artists in engaging one-person performances that celebrate the impact of a single storyteller. For this installment, Tampa Repertory Theatre stages Every Brilliant Thing, with award-winning actor Ned Averill-Snell returning to the role. The play follows a child who, after his mother is hospitalized and struggles to feel happy, begins compiling a growing list of reasons to live... ice cream, kung fu movies, the thrill of burning things, and laughing so hard milk shoots out your nose. Placed on her pillow and returned with corrected spelling, the list keeps expanding and gradually takes on a life of its own, exploring depression and the lengths we go for those we love. Tickets range from $20 to $27.50 depending on seat selection, and select $10 tickets are available through the New Tampa Performing Arts Center’s Affordable Art commitment.

Every Brilliant Thing (Interpreted Show)

An interpreted performance at New Tampa Performing Arts Center shares the story of a child who begins a growing list of reasons to keep going to support a mother facing depression, touching on everything from ice cream and kung fu movies to burning things and laughing so hard milk comes out of a nose. As the list expands, it takes on a life of its own and shows how far people will go for those they love. The production includes discussions of depression and suicide. If support is needed, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Resource links for mental health and suicide prevention are available, and additional materials will be offered in the lobby after the performance. Multiple TTB Award winner Ned Averill-Snell returns to the role as part of the Raise the Curtain on Mental Health Awareness initiative.

Rueda de Casino: Cuban Salsa Classes

Rueda de Casino Cuban salsa classes create opportunities to dance, laugh, learn, and socialize. Instruction is led by Robert Morales with assistant Laura Cristina, who have danced Casino and Rueda de Casino for over 20 years and taught for the past 13 years, continuing to study in Cuba and abroad to bring new knowledge to their students. A progressive 5‑week beginner series teaches fundamental figures and lead and follow technique in the dance circle, and because the material builds each week, new students are not accepted after the second session. The 5‑week intermediate series builds on those foundations with standard Rueda de Casino and Cuban salsa patterns, an emphasis on speed and technique, and the hand signs for each move; participation requires completing the beginner course or confidently executing Vacila, Exhibela also known as Sacala, Sombrero, Adiós or Prima con la Hermana, Setenta, and Balsero. The advanced class is fast paced with more complex Cuban salsa patterns and continued development of partner lead and follow skills that apply in Casino and in a rueda; participation requires completing the intermediate course or confidently executing Coca Cola, Setenta Complicado, Dedo, Montaña, Juana la Cubana, and Sombrero Doble. Classes take place at The Dance Factory inside WestShore Plaza, and there is free parking in the mall lot. Pricing is $60 for a 5‑class punch card or $20 for a single walk‑in class, and passes can be purchased in advance through the Dance Factory app to avoid the rush and help class start on time. Kristy Woodson Harvey | Summer State of Mind

At Oxford Exchange, New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publishers Weekly bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey sits down to discuss Summer State of Mind, a coastal Carolina tale about fresh starts, community, and finding the place that feels like home. The novel follows Daisy Stevens, a burned-out NICU nurse who heads to Cape Carolina seeking a simpler life. On her first day, high school baseball coach Mason Thaysden discovers an abandoned baby, an event that sends ripples through the close-knit town. Still grappling with the injury that ended his big-league ambitions, Mason begins to rethink his future as he and Daisy step in to help. As he introduces her to his circle, including his quirky Aunt Tilley who is ready to confront long-buried family secrets, sparks grow. When Daisy grows attached to the child and a startling revelation surfaces, the three find themselves at the heart of a townwide reckoning. With love, understanding, and even a local production of Hello, Dolly!, the story celebrates how community can lead people exactly where they belong. Harvey is the author of fourteen novels, including Beach House Rules and the Peachtree Bluff series. Several of her projects are in development for film and television. She also cohosts the weekly show and podcast Friends & Fiction with fellow bestselling authors and cofounded the interiors site Design Chic with her mom, Beth Woodson.

Conserving Tampa Bay's Waterbird Colonies

Learn how Tampa Bay’s nesting birds are being protected at an evening featuring a presentation by Jeff Liechty, Sanctuary Manager with Audubon Florida’s Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries. The program highlights decades of stewardship that began in 1934, with ongoing monitoring and care of the region’s nesting islands. Expect insights into the nesting ecology and conservation of signature species such as Roseate Spoonbills, Brown Pelicans, Reddish Egrets, and American Oystercatchers. The talk also covers how unvented attics can improve performance in the South, how intentional material choices support a healthier home, and how strategies such as advanced air filtration and moisture management enhance comfort and resilience.

Turns involve playing cards, deploying characters, and choosing when to quest for lore. Questing increases a player's lore total but prevents that character from taking other actions during that turn, so timing and decision-making are essential throughout the match.

Auditions: As We Like It

Auditions are being held for As We Like It, a new play by Oded Gross directed by Roseanne Olszewski. The process will use cold readings from the script. Because this is a new work, pages will not be provided beforehand, so actors should be prepared to make strong choices and read more than once. Roles include Rose, a young Jewish woman, her uncle Avram, Miriam who is Avram’s teenage daughter, Idis who is another Jewish woman, and the fraternal twins Roland and Kurt, young men in their twenties who live as wanderers. The play follows Rose as she pushes her family to rehearse Shakespeare’s As You Like It for a wedding between a Duke and a Fairy Queen, even though the wedding and the peaceful woodland rehearsal space exist only in her imagination. This hope-filled vision shields her from the harsh truth that the family is hiding from the Nazis in the forests of Poland during World War II. Callbacks will follow the initial auditions. For questions, contact producer Owen Robertson at owen@labtheaterproject.com or 813-586-4272.

Making Mandalas- Imaging the Whole Self

The C.G. Jung Library of Tampa Bay presents an evening with library board member and guest presenter Laura Hensley focused on the art and meaning of mandalas, inspired by Jung’s Red Book. The session explores the circle’s symbolism, psychological purpose, and presence across cultures, then invites participants to create a personal mandala to give shape to the archetype of the Self. The process is welcoming and low pressure, and no prior art experience is needed. Basic materials will be available, and participants may bring their own supplies if they prefer. Discussion and hands-on practice highlight how circular imagery can support a sense of unity and integration. Making a mandala can offer a steadying container for scattered feelings, calming the nervous system and nurturing a felt experience of wholeness. Laura’s approach is informed by Sean McNiff’s inclusive view that everyone can make meaningful art, and she notes that even simple images can carry profound messages from the unconscious. Laura Hensley, LMHC, facilitates creative healing with adults and specializes in Expressive Arts Therapy, Sandplay Therapy, Jungian dreamwork, and EMDR. Her current creative focus is visual journaling, a reflective path toward crafting a personal Red Book.
