The Accelerator Series: Wednesdays with Nik & Lily

District Dance Academy hosts a progressive West Coast Swing training series for dancers seeking more than single-topic classes. This six-week program builds a consistent team of classmates who train together with Nik and Lily through structured coaching, repetition, guided practice, and real social dance application. Rather than packing in numerous patterns, each series concentrates on one core concept or movement family to reinforce fundamentals, refine connection, increase confidence, and deepen understanding. The curriculum advances from week to week with no drop-ins, and enrollment is kept limited to allow more individualized attention and stronger coaching ratios. Each meeting features an intensive class followed by guided practice and social dancing to apply what was learned. Upcoming themes include topics like whip mechanics, the art of the tuck turn, and rock and go foundations and variations. Registration is for the complete six-week course at $120, and full-series enrollment is required since each session builds on the previous one to support group progress.

Nerd Nite St. Pete-June 2026

Nerd Nite St. Pete brings its social learning vibe to Coastal Creative with an evening of smart, spirited fun. Part of a global series active in more than a hundred cities, the format is simple and lively: three passionate speakers share engaging 20‑minute talks while attendees enjoy drinks, local bites, and conversation. Food trucks on site include Hangry Hungarian and Carupano Kitchen. This talk contains images from human dissection. Purdin has practiced massage therapy for 16 years, runs The Metta Center of St. Petersburg, provides bodywork at an acupuncture clinic in Seminole Heights, and is an avid sci‑fi fan and traveler. Emily Oster charts the evolution of birth control, from inventive early methods to the arrival of the pill, then looks ahead to what might come next. Oster has spent over fifteen years in public health across sexual and reproductive health, infectious diseases, and the Covid‑19 pandemic, with experience in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, St. Petersburg, Guatemala, and Rochester, New York. She helped launch Nerd Nite in Rochester and previously held a leadership role in St. Pete. Jameka Williams examines why housing stays unaffordable when cities focus only on luxury or deeply subsidized projects, and makes the case for scalable, mixed‑income, city‑led models that build more homes in more ways, drawing lessons from places already doing it. Williams is a marketer, community advocate, performance artist, and City Council District 6 candidate who works on housing justice storytelling and organizing in St. Petersburg, bringing a people‑first approach that blends strategy, narrative, and humor. Double Feature Art Exhibition: Hiss! BOOM! Squat! & Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin

Two concurrent exhibitions at The Werk Gallery in St. Petersburg, FL present artists from Tampa, Sarasota via New York, and Los Angeles who explore memory, nostalgia, and change through distinct materials and approaches. In the Main Gallery, Philomena Marano and Deon Blackwell share a conversation between cut paper and ceramics. Marano’s meticulously hand cut papier collé, developed while assisting Robert Indiana, turns everyday wonders into layered scenes that draw on the energy of Coney Island, the world of the circus, and the vibrancy of reef habitats. Blackwell reimagines familiar ceramic forms such as containers and arches, integrating text, unconventional materials, and experimental processes to probe early memories, uneasy humor, and coming to terms with the past. Many works on view are being presented to the public for the first time. In the Gabinetto Gallery, Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin debuts Neighborhood Studies, a group of abstract collages built from his own photographs. Serving as both photographer and collagist deepens his connection to a long running archive of Los Angeles neighborhoods, opening space for reflections on memory, loss, struggle, and community. The deconstructed images consider changing urban landscapes and the people and places affected by gentrification, displacement, and the passage of time.

Opening Reception for Neverne Covington: Into the Mystic

The opening reception celebrates a solo exhibition by Neverne Covington, presented through a long-standing tradition at the Morean in which the previous year’s Margaret Murphy Steward Best of Show recipient is awarded a dedicated show that coincides with the following year’s members exhibition. Covington is the 14th artist to receive this honor. Her practice spans drawing, printmaking, painting, and sculpture, and engages themes of childhood, language, landscape, memory, and the gothic South. Her work has appeared at the Tampa Museum of Art, the Brevard Museum of Art, the Florida Museum for Women Artists in DeLand, the state capital, and at venues across Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. She recently completed a residency at VCCA Moulin a Nef in Auvillar, France. Born in Laurelton, New York and raised in Florida, she studied at City & Guilds College in London, graduated from Eckerd College, and has sustained a downtown Saint Petersburg studio for three decades. In the studio, Covington builds canvases with oil paint, oil sticks, and wax, often developing multiple works at once, moving from intimate studies to larger compositions. Successive layers range from translucent glazes to dense, opaque passages, creating a textured surface where each mark guides the next. Immersion in the natural world shapes the work’s reflections on permanence, impermanence, and transience. Rhythm, pattern, and repetition steer her gestures as she smears, drags, and rubs material to form volume and depth, while a dialogue with the history of painting informs each decision. Through this approach, she pays close attention to nature and memory, seeking to bring order to what is known and barely known, and to evoke the known, the unknown, and the unknowable within the living world.

The second day provides a friendly introduction to self publishing and zines, with the group collaborating to design, print, and assemble a short zine from start to finish. Participants leave with an edition of their own prints, one print from each classmate, a PSP riso color chart, and two copies of the collaborative zine. After the workshop, attendees are eligible to schedule studio time to use the RISO. The cost is $250 per person and includes all supplies. Attendees should bring a laptop or tablet, along with a design or photograph to use for the two color print edition.

Anatomy of the Pelvis & Foundations of Adjustments

This multi-session training invites dedicated practitioners to deepen their understanding of the pelvis and the foundations of hands-on adjustments through study, self-practice, peer learning, and reflection. It is well suited for continuing education and advanced credentialing, with an emphasis on applied learning, integration, and a thoughtful approach to teaching that expands depth, scope, and professional responsibility. Building on earlier study, Module Four focuses on hands-on intervention by bringing anatomy, breath, spine, and pelvis into clear relationship so adjustments are intelligent, ethical, and safe. Using the pelvis as a central reference, participants explore how structure, load, and movement patterns shape the kind of support that is offered and received. Instead of memorizing fixed techniques, the work centers on readiness, intention, and response. Foundational shapes with fewer joint articulations come first to develop precision before moving toward more complex variations. The material supports those refining personal practice, collaborating with peers, or teaching, and treats touch as a form of communication that fosters learning, agency, and long-term trust. Key outcomes include a grounded understanding of pelvic anatomy, recognition of essential bony landmarks and joint relationships, and insight into how pelvic organization influences spinal alignment, load transfer, and leg support in asana. Participants learn to gauge when hands-on support is appropriate by distinguishing stability from mobility, effort from collapse, and flexibility from control. They apply anatomical knowledge to offer adjustments that are clear, respectful, and sustainable across different bodies and contexts. Touch is practiced with consent, timing, appropriate pressure, and restraint, emphasizing communication rather than correction. Simple adjustments are differentiated from complex ones, and participants learn why foundational shapes often provide clearer information than advanced bound variations. They adapt support to individual needs without limiting agency or depth, discern when intervention aids integration and when it interferes, and cultivate confidence that prioritizes clarity, responsiveness, and trust over time. Anatomy of the Pelvis with Shila LaGrua highlights the pelvis as a key organizer of movement, stability, and load transfer, showing how its shape and position influence both spinal organization and leg support. Participants identify landmarks and joint relationships, consider the pelvis as the meeting point of spine and legs, and study common patterns that show up in asana. Reading readiness comes before contact, focusing on capacity rather than assumption. This includes assessing structural preparedness, differentiating flexibility from control, recognizing effort, collapse, and compensation, and deciding when touch supports learning or gets in the way. Foundations of adjustments present touch as an intentional action practiced with clarity and restraint. Participants establish clear and respectful points of contact, work skillfully with direction, pressure, and timing, and support agency rather than creating dependency. Accessibility and applicability are emphasized, with strategies for adapting across varied bodies and experiences, working within limitations without losing depth, and translating insights beyond a single pose into broader movement patterns. Hands-on practice includes giving and receiving feedback-rich touch, refining tactile awareness, and developing confidence and restraint, whether working with oneself, with peers, or with students. By the end of Module Four, participants understand that effective adjustments are guided less by technique and more by clarity, readiness, and restraint. The pelvis becomes a doorway to understanding how anatomy informs touch, and how measured, thoughtful intervention supports longevity, trust, and sustainability in practice. The arc of the training includes orientation and intentional touch with clear consent and boundaries, observation-based study of pelvic structure with Shila LaGrua, adjustments as a dialogue that can either support or interrupt learning, discernment in application through scenarios and discussion, and integration through teaching labs, feedback, and reflection on ethics and sustainability across modules. Cost is $467, with a 10 percent discount available to BE Members and Mysore Members. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants per module to maintain an intimate learning environment.

Bringing Your Ancestors to Life: Going Beyond the Facts

Discover practical ways to move beyond names and dates in your family tree during Bringing Your Ancestors to Life: Going Beyond the Facts. Karen Fortin presents a case study that shows how traditional sources, including vital, census, land, and newspaper records, can reveal the stories, experiences, and even personalities of the people in your lineage. Fortin earned a bachelor’s in history and a master’s in library and information science from the University of South Florida. She spent 30 years at the Barbara S. Ponce Public Library in Pinellas Park before turning her attention to genealogical research. She began volunteering with the Pinellas Genealogical Society in Largo in 2012 and served as president from 2014 to 2017. Since 2016 she has given genealogy and history talks at genealogical societies, public libraries, and other organizations, with the aim of helping people connect historical periods, places, and events to a fuller understanding of their ancestors and the world they inhabited.
