A historic member of the Sarasota Art Colony, Arthur is a Sarasota artist celebrating her 100th birthday this year. Over six decades she built a career as a contemporary artist with 30 gallery showings and numerous honors. She arrived in Sarasota in the 1950s with a fine arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh and received a student scholarship from Hilton Leech, a prominent painter and teacher associated with the Ringling School of Art. As a staff artist with the Ringling Barnum Bailey Circus, she created props and dramatic displays, often describing the circus as a constant source of imagination and a place where she formed lasting creative friendships. Her close friendship with Syd Solomon supported her trajectory, and through the New College Arts Institute she studied with visiting contemporaries including Phillip Guston, James Brooks, Larry Rivers, and Conrad Marca-Relli, many of whom became friends and familiar guests in her Siesta Key home. In an era when many women navigated expectations at home while pursuing professional art careers, Arthur committed to abstract, experimental work. She consistently refined her skills, prepared and framed her own canvases, transported her art to shows, and often signed with only her last name to be recognized on equal footing with male peers. Arthur taught hundreds of students and educators, led workshops, and created The Rainbow, a children’s art program on local television. She concluded her career in 2010 and was represented by State of the Arts Gallery in downtown Sarasota for more than a decade. This gathering celebrates her enduring influence and the addition of two of her paintings to the Arts Advocates historical collection.

Exhale & Drift

Exhale & Drift offers a Star Harmony sound medicine ceremony designed for the quieter stretch after the Scorpio Full Moon, when intensity eases and the body can begin to release what it has been holding. Taking place during an extended void-of-course phase in Scorpio, the experience centers on letting go, soothing the nervous system, and resetting from within. With the emotional crest behind, attention shifts to integration as breath deepens, the body unwinds, and inner patterns reorganize. Grounding energy from Taurus season supports the senses and physical presence, while Scorpio helps surface and soften what has been tucked away. Through sound and intention, the session encourages emotional release, parasympathetic regulation, a calm embodied state, and renewed steadiness. If April opened the door to change, this gathering focuses on cultivating the stability to carry it forward. El Gotan: A Vintage Tango Speakeasy

Experience a vintage inspired tango speakeasy upstairs at The Gator Club, where the dance moves unhurried and the night unfolds at its own pace. The evening opens with an Argentine tango group class and then flows into a social milonga. The emphasis is on connection, attentive listening, and the quiet conversation shared by two partners moving to the same musical breath. Some gatherings buzz with energy, others feel reflective, all guided by the understanding that tango thrives in the space between people. Music focuses on the Golden Age of Argentine tango, with a few carefully chosen contemporary orchestras selected for clarity and phrasing, and a rotating roster of guest DJs curating the sets. Class and milonga are each $15, with half off the first visit. Students can attend the milonga for $5 with a valid ID. Street parking is available nearby. Hosted by Zavio and Nicolette, this event welcomes dancers and music lovers from across the Gulf Coast, including those arriving from salsa, bachata, swing, and ballroom who find tango a natural continuation of social movement and musical conversation.

2 Year Anniversary Beach Party!!

Celebrate two years of Suncoast Social, formerly known as Suncoast Nature Society, and a track record of 150-plus gatherings with a relaxed beachside get-together at South Lido Key Beach Park. The plan begins with a casual barbecue picnic potluck, then shifts to a beach celebration in the same area. Pizza is on the menu for the potluck, and grills in the picnic space are available for anyone who wants to cook items such as hot dogs or burgers. Bring shareable food and drinks, a cooler if helpful, water in non-glass containers, and something comfortable to sit on like a beach chair or blanket. Beach games are welcome, including spikeball, frisbee, football, paddle ball, or cards, along with snacks, glow sticks or LED accessories, a light layer for later, sandals or flip-flops, and bug spray. Optional extras like binoculars, a small telescope, and a camera or phone are great for capturing the moment. Expect a friendly, easygoing vibe with music, games, sunset views, and plenty of chances to connect, especially for those in their 20s and 30s. Meet at the South Lido picnic area, then continue to the sand at the tip that faces inland, reached by taking the path between the playground and the picnic tables, near where the Gulf and the bay come together. Parking is expected to be ample at South Lido Park. An after-party is planned at Court 13.

Selby Gardens: Alexander Calder: The Nature of Movement

At the Downtown Sarasota campus of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, the 10th anniversary edition of the Jean & Alfred Goldstein Exhibition Series centers on Alexander Calder and the nature of movement. Original artworks are presented in the galleries of the Richard and Ellen Sandor Museum of Botany & the Arts, complemented by horticultural vignettes woven through the 15-acre bayfront gardens that draw on the living plant collections. The presentation highlights Calder’s interest in energy and motion, his investigations of suspension and equilibrium, and the ways his abstract forms echo patterns found in nature. It also explores his fascination with the circus, shaped by studies of performers and animals with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, a theme with deep local resonance given Sarasota’s history as the circus’s winter quarters. As a leading center for the study of air plants and home to scientifically documented collections of living epiphytic orchids and bromeliads, Selby Gardens provides a setting where art and botany meet in an interdisciplinary spirit.

Dice, Death, and Robots 2k 40k RTT

Dice, Death, and Robots 2k 40k RTT brings a one-day Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition tournament to The Dark Side - Comics & Games, using the ITC format at 2000 points across three rounds. Pairings and results will be managed through Best Coast Pairings. Entry is $20 per player, with prize support in store credit based on attendance, and space is limited to 22 participants. The tournament organizer is Todd Morrison. Event rules include the use of the Pariah Nexus Companion Pack and Mission Cards. Armies must be 2000 points or fewer and built according to the Core Rulebook on pages 55 and 56, with rosters locked for the entire event. Chess clocks are available upon request, and standard clock procedures apply. All current supplements, errata, and FAQs are in effect. Modeling and painting guidelines require WYSIWYG, conversions that maintain the correct silhouette, and the most current base sizes. Paint scoring will not be used, and having models at least primed is appreciated. For list building, the Warhammer 40,000 app is the preferred tool, though a clear written list with all names, equipment costs, and points for each model is acceptable. Have access to your codex and any relevant supplements, with digital copies permitted. The ITC Code of Conduct will be followed. Players must register and submit their lists in advance. Late submissions result in a 10-point deduction in round one and a yellow card, and may lead to removal to a wait list to make room for others. The organizer may adjust rules if necessary. Above all, the goal is for everyone to have fun.
